I have started seeing more posts getting closed after some mild respectful debate. Are we in a nanny forum or am I out of line for having an opinion. It seems as though it might be wrong.
I know we are a patrol forum and often we stray from just patrols but really many of us here are friends in person and online most of these closed threads everyone played fair. What are every ones thoughts

Have to agree with you mate ... if people play 'nice' can't see an issue ..
That said, it'd have to be fairly serious for me to consider questioning another mods decision as we're all pretty laid back with it ..

No Macca. I have known you for a while now and know you call a spade a spade. You have called it a mild respectful debate, how ever sometimes these things can get out of hand. I for one started getting a little protective in respect to the thread you are indicating. I would like to go further with it. But I do not wish to offend others and their views.

Couple of the forum rules are
No politics
No religion
So while AB is away I've shut the thread till he can suss it out.
For transparency I've had a number of members ? This thread so like I say I've locked it till the boss man can eyeball it
Feel free to pm me for a debate hahahaha I love it ;)

The mods do a bloody good job. Even in this thread its evident, to some people its a mild respectful debate but then there is others who it hits very close to home and is gonna affect differently to others. The main problem is we as people are infinitely variable trying to keep the balance is the hard part. Everyone on here gets a long very well and its a credit to the mods as they are the ones making the tough decisions while keeping everyone in mind.

Another forum rule which often gets over looked:
The owners of NissanPatrol.com.au Forum reserve the right to remove, edit, move or close any content item for any reason.
Yes macca you have every right to an opinion as we as mods have every right to edit / delete / close threads.
I don't like to edit other peoples post or close threads, I'm sure the other mods don't like to do it either. There are no set rules to being a moderator, we just do what we believe at the time is in the best interest for Andy and the forum.
If Andy see's a thread that has been locked by one of us he will question our reasoning and if open it back if he see's fit.
Cheers

Hey Macca, not to sure what threads are gettin closed and for what reason, Not really any of my business and I'm not really concerned if they get closed coz there would be a reason behind it.
How ever it is a family friendly forum and we need to remember that it's not just a group of mates that read these threads, it's every one that visits the site, you need to take into consideration that every one dosnt have the same views as you and the same interests as you and may be a bit more conservative than you, yes I know they don't have to read it but they can view it before deciding its not for them. Remember family friendly which also meens members kids can also read this stuff.
As I said I don't really care coz there's so much of interest for me to read on here and if I don't like it I will move on to another but we have to consider others that may not be comfortable as mates just yet. Yes it is a forum (chat room) but if you want to have a chat with mates where anything goes so to speak you have PMs, visitor msgs, text, face book, there a many options, just a thought maybe the mod squad could put up a rated ramble thread with a warning R rated or something of the likes. Sorry mate just MO,
Don't think this site would be what it is if we didn't have the controls that we have, think the mods and the members do a brilliant job to make this place what it is.

I have been on other forums where the thread would be locked then deleted the instant a mod saw it and then the op would be banned.

Well ......... I was about to post a new thread specifically about the closure of the Flag thread, but seeings this one has been started I'll post my thoughts here.
I really am pretty cheesed off that that thread was closed.
IMO it is reasonable to expect that posters will in the main moderate themselves, only requiring the moderators to step in when a poster or posters show an inability to moderate themselves.
In the Flag thread , whilst a range of differing views were expressed, in the main they were done with respect for each other & without promoting or condoning racist behaviours or attitudes.
Rather than close such threads surely it would be preferable for the moderators to moderate individual posts or part posts. This would help to educate all posters about what is & what is not acceptable, rather than just closing the thread because someone has, or might, get out of order?
I can't find the terms of use for the forum at the moment, but I'm sure they must exist, & I'm sure that contained within them will be something to the effect that posts that promote or condone racist behaviours & beliefs are unnacceptable. Having been a moderator elsewhere I understand that such calls can be hard to make but the responsibility to do so goes with the territory, & closing the whole thread does nothing to educate about what is & what isn't acceptable.
As an online community we will have a huge range of views on an infinite range of topics. IMO the forum is like an online camp fire, although it is an interest in Patrols that brings us together, we should hope to be able to discuss, debate, even argue about any topic, just as we would if we were sitting around a real camp fire face to face.
The lack of face to face nature of 'talking' & relative anonymity online makes it easier to overstep the mark. This is why moderators are needed, but in my view to educate, not control, in the hope that participants will learn to moderate themselves.
Closing whole threads only gives the message that contentious topics are 'dangerous' & should not be tolerated. It is also an open invitation to those intolerant of views differing from their own to have others different views effectively censored by turning a thread 'nasty'.
Patrol & 4wd'ing topics will always dominate, as they should on a Patrol forum, but for the community to keep it's 'spark' there is a need for other types of discussion.

I do actually think the mods do a great job here it is a great place to be friendly and welcoming. I just sometime think its a little heavy handed as cuppa says we mostly self moderate because we enjoy this place and respect this place. i am also glad we are allowed to have these kind of threads as it shows maturity.

In case anyone thinks I'm suggesting otherwise, I also think that the mods here generally do a pretty good & seamless job, & that as a community we are generally respectful of each other. Were it not so I would not choose to hang out here.

Its not a debate its an expression of interest on a certain subject, which i think is in general chat ??, and is up to the individual to participate if he or she wishes to do so.
We cover computers, games (three word game is a good one if you want to moderate something that could be taken as offencive, depending on your views) we cover thoughts, fires, tv, jokes, defence force, drunks (ramblin thread) and many others, which some of could be taken offensively depending on the individuals opinion, but they still roll on.

I'm probably not the best mod to have the conversation with - I agree that it shouldn't be closed, but respect the request to do so, and certainly respect the right of the mods to make that ultimate decision. But I also agree 100% that it was travelling well and we all moderate ourselves as such extremely well ... the arguments put forward were fairly articulate, not pointive or insulting, and a very relevant topic ... IF it got out of hand, deletion of individual posts and a closure of the thread 'might' be the appropriate path ... that's up to the discretion of the mods once again. Toddie does a sterling job as a moderator as does Andrew who made a call based on member request - I think the approach is spot on. Lock it down before it gets off its head, review it and if appropriate, open it back up ... Me personally? I think it should be opened back up, but I am but a humble servant to AB (Madam Lash as we refer to him! lmao) so will await his divine input.

I reckon it was 100% the right decision to close the Flag thread and indeed one or two others recently.
It is an incredibly emotive subject and many forumites cannot know which posters do and do not personally know another nor their individual circumstances.
Humour, inflection, body language and tone are all lost on a Forum and can lead to some serious misinterpretations
I also believe the Mods are the umpires who set the morality and ethics of any Forum and by being a member on here I am happy to abide totally by their decisions whether I start, contribute, or ask for a thread to be closed it is IMHO their call and no consultation required.
