Hi all

I'm new to the forum and also a new patrol owner. I've purchased a 1992 gq patrol with the 6cyl efi engine. It has a lot of mileage, 380000, but despite a rough idle and starting hesitation, it runs and drives well.
Have rubbed the chassis down and painted it with por15, put new engine and gearbox mounts in(engine mounts had split in half), put new spark plugs, leads, distributor cap and rotor in and cleaned out the ficd and AAC valve and housing assembly which has almost sorted out the idling issue. Still occasionally runs a little rough, but I'm blaming this on the fuel in the tank. I've been running premium fuel and injector cleaner, and when I went to change the fuel filter, the fuel coming out was black! I'm guessing the injector cleaner is working? I'm hoping that this is also the reason for hard starting? I can't simply turn the key and the engine runs, I need to feather the throttle and it burbles into life. When I cleaned the throttle body with carby cleaner, and I was spraying down the intake quite liberally, I went to start it up and it fired right away which convinces me that there is a fuel delivery issue. Is there a certain fuel component that likes to fail on these machines?

Does anyone know if there is an egr system on the tb42e engine? I've searched and can't find anything.

Also on the distributor there is the large electrical connector, but there also appears to be a single wire connector which has broken off. I think I've found the wire, but I want to know what it actually is.
There is also another broken wire connection on the same loom, but 2 wires and a plug. I'm thinking it could possibly hook up to the power steering pump, because I have no idea where it could come from but it doesn't really reach anything else. Does anyone's gq have wires coming from some sort of sender on there power steering pump?

Thanks all for reading my post, I look forward to contributing in the future.

Andy

Thanks guys. Living in Nowra nsw at the moment. I fix helicopters in the navy for a living, have been to the Middle East and back, married, have a 9year old step daughter and a new one on the way.
My first ever car was a 1973 series 3 land rover. I learnt to drive in that thing and years later when I went to sell it, no one could drive the bloody thing. It's still sitting in my mums paddock.
Here's a photo of the passenger side engine mount I pulled out. I am very lucky that there's a secondary sort of mount to hold the engine in in case of such failures.

Mileage means nothing to me. Gearboxes are 500 on eBay, engines going for slightly more. And almost every part I can think of are readily available for these things. Though looking underneath mine at the gearbox, it appears that there is non standard "sealant" at the seams suggesting that it might have been rebuilt once upon a time...

In the 80's I did 2 stints at 'Tross. Used to work in the tower and loved watching the A4's and T-A4's go past. Loved watching the Grummond Trackers fold their wings up, too.

Enough of my age. Welcome.

Take care out there.
