View Full Version : Where is it cooler? Over the radiator or along the firewall?

Hey all,

I scored some fat as wire from work to use for my rear fridge power and anything else I need, its 5core with 6mm wire inside :D

Started running it last night through the car, love that little gully that runs along my passenger side for fitting the wire into, can't even tell its there!

So at the moment I don't have a dual battery system, wanting to run the power for the fridge only when in transit from home to the destination, wondering what everyone's opinion is on where it would be the cooler area of the two to run my lead to the main battery for the time being?

Over the radiator area or along the firewall? Car is a 1998 2.8 GU.

Cheers for the input.
Regards,
Eric.

I run mine top of the firewall but as long as its not in contact with the radiator I wouldn't think you would have any issues if your overly concerned stick a thermometer in the two places and go for a drive you can always run it in some split tube also

I would take the shortest Route as you want to limit Voltage Drop

Mine runs along the firewall. Make sure you chuck it in some corrugated split plastic tubing. That will shield and protect it.

Thanks Bob, I've already worked out that voltage drop will be neglible as I will be running 2 of the 6mm cables together, I think it worked out at around .2 of a volt at 10amps and the fridge only pulls 6.25. I'm happy to go longer for the time being but want to minimise the heat getting into the insulation and buggering it up.

Cheers,
Eric.

Yeah I might do that as well, Its already double insulated and the cable itself is thicker then my thumb with the 5core inside also each having their own insulation.

Thanks for the reply cheers.

the drivers side has one of those gullys can you just run it on that side for now? The other option is to go across a crossmember then up the drivers side?

I've already got the wire in, excess length in the back for finishing and a whole heap cable tied in the engine bay, Might have a look tonight and just got for it. Cheers.
