View Full Version : 4.5 Exhaust

Hi all, i'm thinking of making up an exhaust for my 4.5 to get the motor to breath better. Just want to know what sizes do people have on theirs and if its worth doing ?? I was planning to get a set of extractor/ header pipes, 2.5" high flow cat, a couple of high flow/ sports mufflers and make it out of 304 stainless steel. I was thinking 2.5" mandrel bent but seeing its a fairly large motor would it be better to run the exhaust from the extractors a 2" siamese style system for flow and air speed?

Cheers George.

You'd get good results from a 2.75"

I was thinking that but i'm not sure how pricey it will be, plus its only temporary for a couple of months or so till i save the $$ up to throw something with a bit more kick under the bonnet!! Plus giving it a full boot to stay at 100 up hills makes the wheels start turning in head lol and looking at the straw it breaths thru its a good place to start.

I wouldn't bother if it's going to be redundant in a couple of months?

Why waste good money..
What are you looking at dropping in it?
And if your looking for power why just turbo the 4.5?

The thought of a LS1 is bouncing around in my head, and if i make it right that will be half my zorst made all i will need to do is add a cat, x pipe and change the rear muffler. I have 2 magnaflow mufflers laying around and a couple of meters of 2.5" pipe just need the headers, cat and a pre bent mandrel or 2 coz i might have a few laying around too.

I was thinking more on the lines of fit the gena in first and when it gets a little "tired" slap together a 7ltr stroker kit, i always wanted a 427 ci or charge it. Its all a matter of funds as always!

Been there done that with the 350 Chev conversion. NEVER again. Forget the 350 diesel V8 too, hopeless engine. Stick with what you have. Look at YTUBE and see what the Saudis can do to a 4.5 or 4.8 and a turbo. IT WILL BLOW YOUR MIND. mind you fuels only 13 cents a litre. I have mates with 4.5 and 4.8 GQ utes that pull a 14 sec 1/4 mile and have 235 rwKw, Ice, ice baby cant touch this. These utes fly

As I said just soup up the 4.5. You can get slightly better fuel efficiency if done right, but if you want to go ls1 I guess fuel is not a problem.

The 4.5 is a torque monster once done right. They'll strip 37" tyres to wire..
And there is no engineering issues to fret about.

4.5L GU's are gutless. I wouldn't bother with a turbo. although i'm not a turbo fan. LS1-2 it, you should be happy with it then.

Gen4's are great engines. Heaps of torque everywhere in the rev range, very smooth power delivery for 4WDing and also quite fuel efficient for what they are, maybe one day!

Can i ask why you wouldn't bother with a 350?? Considering a 5.7ltr is 350 ci and you had a carby conpaired to EFI and last year i went to eden from melbourne my slightly tickled wh stato for $40 in fuel and its weighs roughly 1800kgs and makes 232.2rwkw on 20" wheels in 4th gear(1:1ratio)

Fuel will improve with the ls1 in the gu I THINK, i've had turbos before and when the boost goes up the fuel goes down nothing you can do about it. This is my daily and holiday car, i have a toy its a 500hp rotary and if i drive that daily it will cost me less to run then the 4.5 by about $30 lol not much but at least it can fry tires at 100k's!

I was surprised with mine, if i manually selected 2nd gear n held it flat to the floor i could over take up hills over 100km/h

My 4.5 is a dual fuel and im lucky to get 400km out of 100L. 1 day i want to put a hair dryer on mine, but until then its the slow lane for me.

If you do end up get a set of extractors and ditch the 4.5 in the next few months, hit me up as i would be keen for some. I may live in qld but im always up for a road trip.

I carry 181L of fuel and I'm only getting 600-650klms out of that and I have extractors and 2.5mandrel bend exhaust. But I do have a lot of extra weight. I wish I had your economy.

My lord how do you people afford to pay for that! $250 bucks to only get 600k. Id probably just cry.

Edit, just thought about if, i carry 150 litres petrol/gas and get about 500k so i guess im on the same wave length. But its cheaper than above statement.

Mate i'm bog stock with a'/t's and no LPG, when i first got the truck it was getting 4.5km/ltr after running 4 tanks (120ltrs including sub) of 98RON i adjusted my TPS and timing to get around 6.5km/ltr. I also change my plugs and filters every 10k and just done my leads. I just came back from a 2,000km trip and the best i got was 7.5km/ltr, i'm hoping to get close to 8.5 or 9 with the exhaust untill i turf the 4.5. Can i ask you, is your exhaust very loud?? And does it drone on the freeway?? Just so i know what to expect after i make mine.

My average is about 350-400 out of combined 100L gas petrol. Only got a pipette for a petrol tank. Costs me about $25 per 100km.

Alitis007, The exhaust is not that loud, A Nice note. No drone on the highway. Infact when the windows are up, I can hardly hear it. But the 4.5l days are nearly over for me. Just sold the motor, box and exhaust to make way for the LS1 sitting on the floor in the garage.
Cheers
