View Full Version : Imperial thread size in Patrol chassis

Towards the rear of each of the chassis rails on my '06 Patrol is a threaded hole on the outer side. I don't know what the purpose of these holes is, they are not utilised on my DX cab chassis. However on one side it is perfect for bolting a support bracket to for the gas bottle carrier I just had welded up.

Went to the local fastener joint who are generally very good, to get a suitable bolt. Looked like it would be an M12 fine thread, but M12 was too small, pushing straight through the hole. M14 was too big. Lots of head scratching amongst the bolt blokes who agreed with me that you would expect any thread on a late model Nissan to be metric, but they assured me that there were no other metric options between 12mm & 14mm.

In desperation they gave me a couple of half inch bolts to try, each with a different fine thread (not sure which), but weren't optimistic. When the finer of the two screwed right in you could've knocked us all down with a feather.

Anyone know of anywhere else on the Patrol that non metric threads can be found?

Below is the threaded hole in the chassis I have referred to.

I would not expext to find an imperial thread either could you tap a new thread out to a 14mm?

Usually the 14mm holes are x1.50 and the 12mm will be 1.25,
Being ex telstra they may have drilled and tappped that hole for their own purposes

'Spose you could, ( depends how much 'meat' is behind the thread - which is all but impossible to judge) but as the half inch bolt screwed straight in I reckon it will suffice. I bought a spare to carry.

Is there a comparable Hole on the other side of the Chassis.

Maybe drilled by previous owner to affix something.

Good thought although I doubt it. On the passenger side the hole is behind an under tray water tank, so wasn't utilised, & no evidence of it being used on the driver side either.
Anyone else have these holes? If so could you try screwing a bolt into it ( or out of it as the case may be) & let us know what you find?

No Bob, only on the outer wall of each chassis rail. From the way the thread is 'recessed' it doesn't appear to be a post factory modification.
