Greetings

I just got a GQ and noticed that the speedo guage read slow compared to my GPS, however, when I did speedo check with Odometer on the motorway, it was spot-on (eg, odometer showed 5Km exactly after the 5km check).

Does anyone know why this anomaly?

Thanks

I can see the needle is out, but what about the fact that the odometer reading is spot-on?

Hi mate - were you looking at the odometer exactly as you passed the signs? 100m can go pretty quick and that's pretty much going to give you a couple of km/hr out.

I have seen a post about a variable resistor that can be adjusted to "tune" the spedo. The resisot is mounted on the dash PCB.

The post was about drliling l a smalle hole in the top of the dash housing that enable the speddo to be adusted in situ.

Sounds like someone at one stage has had the speedo apart. Then had the needle of its spindle, & then Put it back on in the wrong position. I have seen this before. hence why your trip meter is reading correct or near too & your dial is out. Hope this helps cheers Jono.

What size tyres are you running?

I Don't think some of you are grasping the OP's question. Whats has his tyres got to do with his question? If he was running 35's his speedo would be out. But his trip meter would also be out that same amount. he says his trip meter reads right meaning his tyre speedo combo are in sync. His needle is reading a different reading to his trip meter. To me this means his needle has been repositioned at some stage. The needle & trip meter read off the same pulse. Glad to hear your input to how his tyres would make his speedo needle out but his trip meter still reading right.I might learn something new myself.
cheers Jono.

You can get one from Mark's adapters that has a switch to change the reading if you run two sets of tyres, would be pretty neat but it isn't cheap

Nothing from there is cheap....

Over 5 KM that would be 500M, so it would not be that.

265 75 16 , but that would not explain anomaly

That sounds like a good theory. The way to test this would be to compare differences between speedo and GPS at different speeds. If it is this, then the needle would be out by an offset of say 10Km/h and not a percentage because the dial has a linear scale. I'll check this out and let you know.

both of mine are out, I drive to the same speed as most drivers on the road, has worked for me for many many years on all cars & bikes & only done for speeding when I have had a foot into it, clearly over the speed of the average Joes out there

GQ speedo adjustment

This is great. It looks to me like the needle has its own calibration, whereas the odometer is a direct reading

Most speedos are out wether they be brand new or 20 years old. The odo as you've seen and mentioned is more direct and accurate. Which is great if you watching and wanting to keep accurate measure of km I guess. You can measure speed against most GPS units but even they can be out a bit. For the record for some reason mine, and a few others I know that run on 33's the speedo is fairly accurate. One way t check accuracy is to ask your friendly neighborhood policeman if they would mind checking your speed with the gun. They're calibrated very accurately.

I did tests on the way back from Sydney yesterday.
GPS Reading -> Speedo Reading
40 -> 45
60 -> 66
80 -> 86
90 -> 96
100 -> 110

If it was the spindle, I would expect the needle to be sitting on about 5 mark when stationary. It is hard to decide between the calibration because about the 100 it was definitely greater than the 4- 5 at the 40 km mark. I would put my money on the pot adjustment under the dash. However, it is probably not worth the trouble - I basically know that if I stick the the limit on the needle then I will be below the actual limit by between 5 and 10 km/h
