G'day Trendsetters,

I need a second opinion for my father-in-law who is currently in Geelong at the moment. The reason being is as follows.

Over the last 5 years my father in-law has spent over $9,500.00 with Denco Diesel, by having the following work done!

1. Major 100,000ks service $1000.00

2. 150,000ks service $750.00

3. At 175,000ks replaced injectors with new ones and Dyno-tune $1,000.00

4. Replaced factory turbo set-up with Schwitzer S series turbocharger $3,200.00 plus his old factory turbo set-up.

5. Intercooler Kit $2,500.00

6. New clutch kit $ 1,200.00

7. Dyno-tune $ 350.00

Now he has been told, that he needs his injector pump replaced and he also needs an h'duty radiator and this will solve his over-heating issues. He has been quoted around $3,000.00 for this work to be done. This is why i need him to get a second opinion.

My concerns are as follows, firstly, when Denco did the turbo upgrade 2 years ago on his factory 4.2 turbo, i had to fix an oil leak, tighten up the turbo bolts on the Dump-pipe and manifold bolts. When i rang them to let them know what i had to do, there response was it was fine when it left our work-shop mate!

12 months ago, my father in-law had Denco install an intercooler kit to his Patrol to help give him more power to tow his new $90,000.00 Track-Master off-road van. My father in-law advised Denco that he was concerned about the high water temp reading when towing his new van. They advised that the water to air intercooler would help reduce his temps.

10 months ago, my father in-law arrived at our home in Woolgoolga not happy with spending over $2,500.00 on his new intercooler kit, first problem, they failed to fit his electric winch back to the Patrol after advising him that he would not loose his winch. The pricks, just placed his winch on the floor in the back passenger seat area. They knew the poor old soul had just had an hernia operation and was unable to lift any heavy objects. Then they told him that the Warn winch cannot be installed with there intercooler set-up. They should have told him this first before they took his money.

One of the main reason's i have bought a United TD05 turbo and Cross Country intercooler was due to the very poor power torque performance of the Denco set-up. You are looking at $6,000.00 for shit results.

My father in-law rang Denco to advise them that he was having problems with the intercooler due to lack of power. When he arrived back at Denco before Christmas 2012, he was informed, that the Intercooler was working fine when it left there work-shop 12 months ago, they cannot understand why it is not performing they way it should be. However, they advised him that he needs to replace his injector pump and radiator and that will help with his water temp issues.

What a farken load of bollox! One of the main reasons why i have not touched my father in-laws Patrol was due to warranty issues on both the Turbo and Intercooler. Denco have failed on both occasions to properly address these issues.

The only time my father in-law's patrol water temp rises, is when it is under load whilst towing his van up steep hills. Normal for all towing vehicles to have water temps climb whilst towing a 2.5 tonne off-road caravan up steep hills!. I demonstrated this to my father in-law when i towed his van with my factory 4.2 turbo Patrol, the water temp climbed (normal for the conditions) To be feed bullshit that the injector pump and radiator is causing his heating issues is wrong.

My father in-law is typical old school, he is very loyal and will believe what ever the mechanic says to him. He does not like confrontation and will stew on things, instead of asking questions. I am concerned that Denco think he is a cashed up retiree with money to spend. (ie, the new $90,000.00 Track master off-road caravan.) He has gone through a terrible divorce settlement after 38 years of marriage and the off-road van is now his home. They know he is about to go around Australia this year. The poor old sod is stranded in Geelong at his sons home believing he is unable to travel around Australia unless he replaces his injector pump and radiator. His Patrol has only 230,000ks on the clock and it is a good truck. Never had a problem until the turbo and intercooler up-grades!

I have finally gotten him to listen to me by agreeing to get a second opinion. That's where i need your help!

If any forum members that live in Geelong, could please advise me of a good Nissan Diesel mechanic in the Geelong region to get a second opinion from would be extremely grateful!

Kind regards,

RLI

I would second Diesel Tech in Lilydale, although I have never used them for a service....just been in for advice, and I thought that they presented the information well.

I had not seen this thread but RLI pm'd me.

I have sent him to Chris Dalton from Dalton Automotive in South Geelong who tuned my GUIV. He knows his stuff and does most of the TD42 Dyno Tuning in Geelong. Very Competent and very honest.

Sounds like the car has all the goodies but is set up like a POS. Chris should be able to sort it out for him. RLI advises that his Father inlaw has all the Denco Dyno sheets so the comparison should be interesting.

G'day MudRunnerTD,

Thanks so much for your help mate!

I spoke to Chris this morning on behalf of my father in-law (David.) We have him booked into to see Chris next Tuesday. Fantastic bloke, advised me he will dyno tune her and will let him know exactly what is happening with the Patrol. Will only cost about $220.00. When i told him that my father in-law seems to have trouble with the idle when he puts the air-con on. As quick as a flash, Chris advised me it could be an idle up Solenoid playing up. I like the man! He further advised me that he will tune and set-up the Patrol for his towing requirements.

Regards,

Paul (RLI)

Nice work Mudrunner, that's what I love about this forum,

On a side note, Paul did the FIL(David) deal with Denco at Wagga or somewhere else,

I have dealt with Denco at Wagga regarding parts for my after market turbo which was badly set up when I bought it and they have been nothing but helpful.

Anyway looks like it's going to be a great result.

G'folks,

Up-date on my father-in-laws Patrol situation!

My father in-law (David) took his Patrol to Chris Dalton at Dalton Automotive in Geelong. He fixed his idle problem, dyno tuned it for $150.00. Chris's dyno tune returned his Patrol to same specs that Denco had done 12 months earlier. The odd thing was, that the Patrols performance figures from the last Dyno tune that Denco did on the 17th December last year, did not match Chris Dalton's first run figures! In other words, when Denco advise my father in-law on the 17th December, that they could not understand why the Patrol had lost 20kw of power and then tried to advise my father in-law that he may need a injector pump upgrade. The real reason was that Denco's dyno tune equipment could have been faulty! However, I am piss-off that Chris Dalton could fix my father in-laws idle and alleged over heating problems where Denco advised a radiator up-grade and a injector pump up-grade! Chris just re-tuned the Patrol and adjusted the idle fixed the problem all for $150.00. Outstanding!

The positive thing about this situation, is the help from the fanatic people on this great forum and especially MudRunner TD who advised Chris Dalton to my father in-law. As a result of Chis's great work, my father in-law has booked his Patrol in to Chris next Wednesday for a major service and other work before heads of touring around Australia. My father in-law was overwelved by Chris's service and professionalism. Chris has now gained a new customer for life! Denco has just lost a client who had spent over $9,500.00 over the last 4 years! Too bad, so sad!

RLI

How do these places stay in business??

Must rely on new customers, certainly not referrals by the sound of this thread!!!
