Hi, I have a 2002 Patrol 3lt manual and it has an annoying whine in the drive train when coasting, goes away when pulling or decelerating and is particularly loud around 104/5. Changing out of 5th doesn't make any difference so maybe not coming from that area. Would appreciate any ideas what it might be please?

Thanks Mike K

sounds like bearings to me maybe thrust bearing on your clutch, their noise can disappear under load or come to think of it so do your uni joints in the tailshaft.

to check if its thrust bearing slowly release the clutch doesnt have to be in gear if you get all the way out and no noise not that.

to check uni joints have car in nuetral chock the tyres so it doesnt move then grab the tailshft and the gearbox exitshaft in either hand and twist like a chinese burn if theres movement between the joints its knackered now remember you have 4 sets of these so check all of them, if all good see a mechanic
