Who has paid or knows someone that has paid, what seems to me to be extreme prices for a patrol with a TD42 in it. I'm looking for another patrol possibly 2 & the prices are extreme. Well I think so anyhow. Are these patrols actually selling for the extreme prices being asked. $20000 for a 89 GQ with a turbo, I think is a bit out there. I want a TD42 Gu also, but I've seen 2001 model asking $45000. I rang one bloke, ol fella he was, had a 2001 168kays i owner looked immaculate in pic $19900, Sold. Seen it back on net 2 days later at a yard in Sydney for $30990. Nice profit there! So are people actually getting these prices?
Cheers Jono.

I think 20k is a bit steep for a gq but people are regularly paying 10-15k for gq td42 and 30k + for Gu td42 no probs at all.

Definetely a sort after engine thats for sure....

Yea I know the TD42 is a good & sort after engine. I've had 4 GQ's 3 TD42's & a TB42. I wouldn't hesitate on another TB42 etc, but the fuel consumption is just too much for my misses to run around town in. I've looked at 2 GU's, 99 models with N/A TD42 dx's, both $15000. The 1st one had a dent in every panel, drivers seat was past rooted & it had that god awful brown interior. The 2nd was identical looked in better condition but was full of rust. Chassis, bullbar, doglegs & gutters. The lass that owned it swears it had never been on the beech, hmmm................

We have a 2003 GU ST-L 4.2 turbo and paid 40k with only 95k on the clock one owner mums taxi ;-).. For me it was a no brainer!! I wanted a GU and do not like the pissy gutless 3L at all.. I was after good old reliable and that's what I went for!!! But We did look for almost a year before this one came up. It was immaculate in every way and unmolested didn't even have a bull bar..... But now it has all the bells and whistles :-)

I think the main issue as its been for anything over decades,
Ol mate over spends on his car, asks way to much to recoup his massive costs, and his price then becomes the benchmark for someone else
One over priced rig, then theres another then another
The other issue is many prefer the GQ over the GU ,(No need to hide its a fact proven many times over)so there becomes cheap end GUs and massive demand for GQs
Many who pay silly money have either looked and looked at so much junk,or can see the value in paying so much
I over stretched my budget when i bought my GQ petrol,i got sick of the rubbish, and to this day i havent seen or found one so clean
20 K for an 89 GQ ,is way out there

I got a gu 111 4.2
and yes they are up there , but since buying it I have had a genuine offer of more than i paid , people want them for there towing abilities , I had been ready to buy a new duel cab and had test drove the new colorado , and others as i need to be able to tow the full 3.5t , and from my point of view they are screwing to much out of the little motors , the demand is from people with boats and vans on the larger size ,

Thankfully I got in at the correct time - about 3.5 years ago from a car yard.

My 4.2 TDi, ex Telstra ute with a pod and 'Remote Area, Country Pack' cost me $27k - advertised special (originally $28k).

Since Nissan announced they would't be making the 4.2 any more, the price is skyrocketing quite regularly.

I've got mine insured for $40k, and I think that might be an underestimation.

I'll be looking with envy as to how much people are willing to spend or have seen them in a car yard or for private sale.

Yeh I paid 30 k for my 4.2 tdi and it had 30 k's on it, it was a bit untidy but for what I seen in the way of gq s and the price of them I decided on this one and I am more happy with it.

unless the new v8 is ecnomical while towing in the REAL WORLD , not the we towed a 15ft tinny up a hill ,and in a bog stock no accessories type figures , that have no hope of ever been acheived , they will be in more demand , who knows they might be the GTR ,SLR or GTs of the 4wd world LOLs

The new dual cabs do look good, then throw in 0 % interest over 3 years,or 2 % over 5 years, and they look rather impressive on a money point of view
But i just cant see how as you say screwing so much force fed power has longivity in it .....
The 2.8 GUs wernt to shabby when they were new,but obviously for whatever the reasons , force fed small engines in large cars isnt a winning formula
If only i could find a minter F truck 7.3 L turbo diesel for around 40 grand,id buy it in a heartbeat
They still command 2nd hand what a new V8 cruiser or diesel patrol are new .....

Good response guy's. Everything I've looked at on or near the coast is rusty, either surface every where or worse. Just looked at an ad for a another gq turbo. 400,000 kays & body is ruff as. $12000 i don't think so.

saw that one too. Think he's dreaming but there are a few for well over $40,000. My question is, when you can buy a brand new 2012 patrol (base model) for around $55,000 why would you pay $45,000 plus for a minimum 6 year old car with if your lucky 100,000 kms on it? I know it's a great motor but I'd take the new car!

same i love the 4.2 but unless its got less than 200k on the clock and under 30g in smicko condition as Dad from the castle says "tell 'im hes dreaming", no second hand car is worth that much same tojo's ok they are a good car apparently but not worth 40g for a second hand 250k turbo diesel

Not really a case of what they are worth, but what people are willing to pay.

My GU IV with all the fruit cost me around $65k to buy and build up, I'd be happy to take that for it now, but I could realistically expect $55k (it has less that 100k on the speedo) with what the market is willing to pay.

....... and no it is not for sale :)

Well that depends if the bank manager says you can afford the newie for 10 large more .......
The big question now is ,why buy anything 2nd hand and pay anything over 5 % interest ,maybe 10 or more, when a new car can be had 0% over 3 years ,or 2 % over 5 .......
New car sales deals like this will crush the used car market
Example say $250 a week payments on a used 40 grand car high interest rate,or brand new car 2 % ,anyone would go the new car every time, yet new car sales arent anything exciting lately

Well If the do-gooders would stop running the country then Mr Nissan would still be selling the TD42 here in OZ & I think I could have picked up a good GU TD42 200kays for $15k not $40k. I just can't bring myself to buy a 3lt GU.

the way I see it it is horses for courses , I also looked at a new 3lt as a option , the price was good I could have had a base model for $49 000 money on the table drive away , than went and put one of the boats I tow over the weigh bridge , 3.2t full of fuel water etc and all ready for a trip , figured that was to close to call for insurance and would make the little 3lt work to hard , the 4.2 while not fast getting to speed it cruises eaisly at the speed limit and ive got 300 kg to spare on the tow rating.
and thats why the 4.2 for me
never rely on manufactures tow weights load it like you are going away put the family in the car and head to a weigh bridge on the way to your next holiday you will be suprised

Does anyone know how a 3ltr goes with chip, exhaust, intercooler etc maybe a turbo uprade compared to the 4.2. You are starting to talk big money though!

I ended up getting $17000 for my old gq with td42 and aftermarket kit, also had a genuine 660,000Km on it, tho it looked mint and ran perfectly. I paid $7500 for my current fatcory auto td42 gq which is perfect and inly 180,000km. so far ive spent $8500 on it and with all its got id be surprised if i didnt recover what ive spent.
