Hi, got a Drift Boost Controller (Auto Barn) off Santa, can anyone tell me if i can use this instead of a dawes valve ? is there any difference, don't really know anything about boost controllers. Got all the NADS done except the valve

Dawes controller only named after its maker, Darren Dawes, So DRIFT boost, or a manual BOOST controller would be the same
3 OUTLETS ,adjustable and spring loaded. DAWES only $44 posted from the states, or PM mudski he may have some.

can i do without the needle valve or is it a necessary part?

you may find it spools up too fast, I fitted my needle valve under the bonnet as set and forget, others mount them in cab.
See how you go first but I would fit it $85 from Dependable Distributors in S.A.

Depends....
If you leave the Boost Control Solenoid connected in the system you don't need the Needle valve. You would choose this option if you are only concerned about preventing over boosting.
If you want full manual boost control then you take control of the VNT actuator away from the ECU/Boost Control Solenoid and replace its function with a Needle Valve. The Needle Valve then controls turbo response and the Dawes Valve controls max boost pressure.
If you fit a Dawes and don't do either of the above, threedogs is on the money.

No. A drift boost controler will not work as a replacement for a Dawes valve. They are designed for wastegated turbos where you want to bleed off a bit of boost going to the accuator. It is essentially just a needle valve.
The Dawes valve works by using boost pressure to push air past a spring loaded ball bearing. This is fed into the vacuum system prior to the VNT accuator and reduces vacuum and thereby reduces boost. You can use the Drift controler as the needle valve but it won't be as easy to adjust because the DV6 has a finer adjustment.

Thanks, i think i will just go straight for the Dawes and needle valve. I've looked on Chaz's website on how to fit them and i'm going to have a crack at fitting them myself. Going to be towing a 3 tonne offroad caravan 95% of the time, just wondering if there is a happy medium between van on and off ? or, do i need to have 2 seperate settings that i change as needed ?

You may also want to give The Ferret a PM to get a blanking plate for your EGR
Very easy to set up If you order a DAWES valve from the states ,get Darren to throw in an extra TEE

The one seting will do the job. I tow a 1000kg camper trailer and a 6.3m 1800kg boat and the system keeps everything in check without adjustment.
You could do a dual dawes install and have a high and low boost setting if you want more boost when towing.

I called in at my local car accessory shop. He had a kit with all different sized rubber caps. You don't really need to block any of the ports as you will completely bypass the controller. The only reason I did was so that rubbish would not get into the ports - just in case I wanted to connect the solenoid again for whatever reason.

Spot on. It won't work. You need to use a Dawes valve. I don't have any left. Sold 20 in 10 days :/ I have another 30 coming with EGR plates and needle valves which will be much cheaper than the ones from dependable. Hopefully the shipment has arrived by the time I get home from my trip...
