G'day all.
Yesterday i was driving the truck and i heard a clunking noise in the front end after about 30 kms. Quickly pulled over to find all the wheel nuts on the drivers front wheel were loose and about to come off. tightened em' up again and drove it for a further 250 odd kms with out a problem.

The truck is running sunnies and 35's on it.

Has anyone else heard of this problem or experienced this.

Glen.

Yes mate, unfortunately a very common problem on the GU but more so with alloys than steelies

Get some VB into ya!

Do you have the original bolts on? The original ones don't countersink into the holes there for the will never hold the sunnies on properly

The original bolts do countersink, mines a 09 and the genuine nuts and alloy rim are countersunk , can't vouch for earlier models though

I didn't think GQ had this issue.
Good idea to check all your nuts once a month IMO
Gotta check tyre pressures,

I check my wheel nuts when I check my tyre pressures every Monday morning

GQ original nuts I know won't counter sink to GECKO rims and there's another brand I've had cant remember name but is suggest getting all new nuts unless someone has played with the wheels cost about 40t to 60 for new nuts from tyre factory

I was taught to finger tighten the wheel nuts to make sure they're centered, use a torque wrench to nip them up and to drive for a kilometre or two then torque the wheel nuts again. Seems to work on steel rims, but I've had alloys which used to work themselves loose after a few thousand K's.

I hadn't heard of this happening on a gq but yes on a gu with alloys...

I have the right wheel nuts to suit the sunnies. Just drove it again and all was good. might put some lock tight on all the nuts or even just check them once a month or so.

Hmmmm... very suss. GQ, Steel Rims, 35 inch... Unless you had that wheel off recently methinks someone has been eyeing off your 35's...

The wheel most likely to develop loose nut syndrome due to the physics of mechanical design and assuming right hand threads on the studs is the left rear. Thats why they used to put LH threads on some vehicles (esp light trucks) on the LH side wheel studs front and rear quite some years ago but it caused more hassles than it cured so the practice died off.

Never had an issue with original steelies or the new ones, maybe an issue with the geckos if you can't use your standard countersunk nuts. I must admit, I've only ever heard of geckos being used on trailers.

Don't stroke it, TAP it!!!!.....

I've got Geckos on my muddies and have never had a problem with countersinking.

Just got some new BFG's on the GU a fortnight ago and the dealer advised to check the wheel nuts after 24 hours even though I have steel rims. He reckons not such an issue on the steel rims but better to be safe. Said he had seen it happen on the alloy rims as a customer didn't heed his advice.

I am with the Evil Twin on this one, someone tampering with your nuts mate lol, dont put locktite on as it can be a real bitch to get the wheel nuts off on the side of the road, I instruct the shop to tighten them with a wheel brace & not a rattle gun, my wheel bloke hates me for it, now I go in & tighten my own
