Hi All,
Im thinking about putting a bonnet scoop on my 02 4.8 Patrol.
To help expel hot air from bay and for looks too:p:p:p
Has anyone been down this path?
If so what scoop did you end up using?
My research indicates that the WRX ones are a good fit for the Patrols.
Anyone care to share some info / pics?
Thanks in advance :-)

Trouble is by law you can't face the scoop rearwards, allowing hot air to escape, cause if you do heater hose water etc on windsheild.
Why not think outside the box to be different and reccess some XA ford style scoops into the bonnet, there is a GU running around my way with
twin GU scoops, I ran twin GU scoops on my other 4x4 with good results

Hey Winnie are they designed to let air out or force air in, would look neat anyway,
Have a good one one mate catch you next year for sure,
Winnie
22nd December 2012, 08:27 PM
Well they were designed purely for looks... petrol engine and all but looked awesome! I tried to buy the bonnet off him when he sold it but he wouldn't even take $400 for it.
It would force air in
Looked just like this

A Turbo Freak has developed this and some other bits and pieces for Patrols,
underneath it has vanes to direct air to the front of the I/C, Your I/C will work now at say 60 kph instead of 80 kph.
Really felt the difference when removed to be sprayed. I don't sell these I brought it from a local 4x4 shop

RLI does it have vanes to allow air flow to the front of the IC or does it only use the rear. I problem I can see with the scoop is it wont work. Sorry. Blue tack some cotton on front of your bonnet and check, Any Patrol with a Bullbar renders your scoop useless unless you have the taller style, Check it You'll see. Plus the LED bar will deflect the air even higher. IMO

There has been a lot of research done on what you suggest 3D and they have found a bull bar doesn't alter it that much at all. The standard GU scoop is just a useless design and if you think about it the front of a patrol without a bull isn't really any less square than one with a bullbar. You can get the metal deflectors for the standard gu scoop which improves them dramatically. We have one the same as RLI's fitted to one of our patrols and it works great it's on a tickled td42 running 18psi and I can't get EGTs to even 400 degrees. I'm pretty sure A.R.E do the scoops and vanes you have on yours.

Thanks for the heads up, but still not conviced scoops work at all, I have yet to see any moth go into the scoop, always at the last moment it veers up an goes over the top.
My mates are in the Aviation industry, so we;re trying another deflector of the top of bullbar soon to see if we can get max air into scoop. Not sure it is an A,R,E. as its a local guy,
The IC are, Its all about airflow like you said and the Patrol isn't exactely F1 technology

A.R.E are located in Brendale QLD. They are some of the best in the business and their work is of the highest quality. They have done extensive research into the intercoolers for the ZD30 including the scoops and metal louvre that 3D has spoken of.

I just fitted a diesel bonnet on my Ti and it needs a bit of adjusting but with the factory nudge bar the bonnet lifts from 60's so in guessing the factory scoop works from 60, how well it works is another story.http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2012/12/65.jpg

Only from what I was told when I brought it, STD scoop will work about 80KPH, the A.R.E. scoop
will work at 60KPH. how they found that out I dont know, but you can tell the difference.
pros;, look great , can feel the extra pull
cons; way too pricey, for the price not painted IMO

TBH I didn't feel any extra in power, so the only pro for me is looks. But it must be doing something as my IC is always dirty and full of bugs now as before it was always spotless... The con in definitely the cost, luckily I had the invoice change to a injector pump repair and put it through the business :) and it comes painted in white so it matched my car straight up.

Has anyone considered a spacer to raise the OE scoop with an air louvre built into the spacer ?
threedogs
27th December 2012, 03:54 PM
that will only still push air to the rear of the IC. these are designed to direct air to the front of the IC, worth a look though, and probaly cheaper too
