Well, I just accepted a redundancy package from my employer of over 10 years. Now the question is what do I do with myself....lololol besides drinking everyday!
Do I travel this great country, got enough to keep us going for a few years..pick up a few jobs here and there.
Go back to the workforce and put up with the business politics again? Easy to get a job around here.
Take it easy, find a bit of work here and there. A mate has offered me some night work which is good pay?
We own the house, and owe on the van which I'll pay of now.
I do like to keep busy so mopping around isn't ganna work. Gotta think about retirement and super so need to consider that as well.
I'm even thinking of moving but I do want the kids to finish school here(not really sure why...loL) but we do have a good education system here in ACT
...now back to my beer! lol

Some tough decisions there mate. Good to see you got paid out and not just kicked out as happens so often now.
I guess a lot depends on your age, how long it is until you'd like to retire and also how much money you'll need in retirement.
Are the kids looking at Uni, because that it getting more and more expensive all the time.
For the time being though, kick back, have a few beers and enjoy Christmas and the freedom from work

All the Best Kris. Your kids are young mate so you are maybe tying yourself to the ACT for at least another 10 years! at Least!
Do them a favour, pack up the van again and head North West. go Mining or Go Outback for at least a year or two. The Kids will Love it and will shape them forever. It will Not hold them back it will provide a foundation.
Alternatively......

I was an AVI in 1994/95 in PNG as a young 24 yo and had a great time for 2 years. I have never forgotten my journey and never will. It Shaped me as a Man. There are plenty of families that do it for 12 to 24 months and never look back. I have a Big Mortgage or i'd be all over that. If your secure then NOW is the best time to expose your kids to this most Incredible Journey.
Take them to Africa or Asia and into a Community, they will come home with a World View and another language, as you will. Or AVI also run programs into Indigenous communities in Australia.
Either way GOOD LUCK BUD.

Payout the debts, look at downscaling your assests,by that i mean maybe selling and buying a larger space abit further a field
Enjoy the relaxed lifestyle of the country
Give ya kids some room to grow, get em on quads, motor bikes, all that without whinging neighbours
Theres only a small handfull of students in the local schools, if your on the school bus run kids get picked up and dropped at your gate
Grow some vegies, have chooks, enjoy a healthier life, bugger that fast food saturated greasy stuff
Fasted thing that moves out here is the grass growing,oh and me drinking beer , but thats the daily compulsary intake, thats a given

Bloody hell Kris, life is hard aye, decisions decisions decisions....lol
Me personaly mate need to keep busy, the thought of giving up the workforce unless i could live very comfortabley for the rest of my time on this planet just doesnt cross my mind.
Yer i hate working, but would go nuts without it unless i could afford to do what i want when ever i want.
Yes you got a payout but consider your curent budget per annum and est how many years left in such an old bloke like yourself lol, then do the sums, bet the payout doesnt meet lifes expectancy aye.
We own our house to mate, but with no income coming in and the cost of maintaining the home, kids, living expenses, edumacation and lifes unexpected moments, it soon gnaws away at the savings acc. so unless you got around 800k+ have a real good think mate.
You could invest, property, shares, buisiness, what evr but do your research first. You could travel the country again picking up work on the way to fund the trip so you didnt have to dip into the redundancy unless it was an emergency, but dont let everything become an emergency.
Take time out for a bit, travel or just do nothing, then re assess but remember the longer you are not earning, the more of your future you are spending.
I got a payout a few years back, prob' not as much as yours, but if i were smart we could of lived for 12 months comfortabley without worrying about bills and work. Guess what i was back at work in 3 months. If you got it you will spend it.
IMO i would lock away a large portion of it in a high interest acc for as long as possible 5-10 yrs, keep a portion to enjoy, pick up some work to support your current needs and hold on to it as long as you can.
What ever you decide mate, i hope you have a great time ahead.

Haha, Thanks guys. Don't get me wrong I am not loaded by any means, just comfortable. I can afford to play around a bit but a wrong move will see me broke in no time so I'm considering all options.
MQ MAD, I love this option and I'm strongly considering as well. I just hope the missus is as flexible, ehich I think she is so its something we will consider.
ohhh by the way, she kinda doesn't know yet...LOL

My wife's uncle Stan took a package of $450k (yes not a typo), bought a second hand car , paid off $40k on the house, and they literally blew the rest on the pokies, 3-4-500 bucks s day at the pokies, you'd think they would have realised you can't always win. They wanted build a new house but bank were reluctant to give them the money seeing all the withdrawals at the casino. I guess, I'm just trying to say be very wise with your money. Your the political state, become a politician, that way you can still do nothing and get paid for it. It's like working only better.

Hi Kris,
From the pics the kids look young enough to adapt to a move. My daughter and family (husband and two kids) recently recently returned from 2 years in Port Hedland. They kept their house here and rented it out, only came back as they wanted the eldest to have another year in primary school and then high school with some friends. Son in law did FIFO for a while then the family moved up, lived in the caravan for 12 months then moved into a house. All accommodation, utilities etc. paid for. From the sounds of it there is a very good primary school up there as well. My daughter walked into a retail job and they were happy to accept her work hours and conditions. After two years they are setup, looking at opening their own business but undecided, can always go back to FIFO. Lot's of good 4WDing up there, fishing and mud crabs. Grand kids haven't shut up about it, wish it was me but to long in the tooth.
Sit back, think about it and take your time to decide.
Cheers
Jack

I'm agree with MQ MAD, and after reading his post I have decided to move to QLD and live with him.
Don't worry about the kids and school, they will adapt, school is only a place for over paid people to get together and whine that they don't get paid enough, even thought they only work half a year. If going to school was not mandatory here my kids would be home taught.
Good luck with whatever you choose to do, I wish I was in your position @ the moment :) Decisions, decisions..............2 many decisions...........It's a hard life.

If you're gonna move do it while the kids are younger, easier for them to adapt. Would be so much worse when they're older.

95 % of people who get a win fall, wether huge payout, win the lotto or inheritance are broke in 3-5 years
If you cant decide for awhile,go throw it in the bank fix it short term and make some money while you wait for the missus to tell you whats happenin ....

People think when they have a sum of money it will last them a lifetime, especially when its a large sum. The more you get the more you tend to spend if you're not careful. Nothing lasts unless you care for it.

Hey mate. It sounds like you are pretty level-headed about it. A financial adviser might be the go? For the little it costs they can map out a number of scenarios based on your ideas/plans so you can evaluate.
