Hey guys I'm looking at superflex lift kits from superior and can't decide between 4 and 5 inchs, I'll be running the 33" Mtz's I have for the time being but I'm worried 5" will be a bit too tall and attract too much attention from the boys in blue.
If anyone could help me decide buy posting up some pics (before and after would be handy) and suspension details it would be much appreciated ;)

Cheers, Jon

go the 4 inch. even a 3inch keep it low (within reason) keep it stable make it flex well and get the power to the ground properly and your rig will perform

None if your not going to get it certified, If you get it certified you won't have to worry about the boys in blue pulling you over, just remember if you have an accident and your troll is not certified with the lift your insurance will not cover you.

Is there a way to get it certified in qld

Hi Jon,

I would advise that a 5 inch lift running 33's is too much, you would probably wouldn't want to go past 4 inch. A bigger lift needs bigger tyres to keep stability, 5 inch with 33's would look pretty tall and would feel a little unstable too. All depends on what your plans are tho if your thinking of 35's down the track maybe, however I would advise 4 inch would suffice. The other thing you have to think about are the legalities as well. In Vic over two inch lift is "technically" illegal and so is over 35's. I'm not saying don't go there, as long as you are aware. The way I see it if your truck looks neat and respectable hopefully it doesen't attract too much attention from the boys in blue. Hope this helps.

I'm not up 2 speed on the new rules, they changed as of the 1st of November, there is someone on her in QLD that is a certifier for some mods, can't remember if he does lifts. But he is up to speed on the regs for QLD.

Bare with me while I have a beer and try and remember who it is :)

David Metcalfe from Xtreme 4x4 Sports: http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/member.php?5592-Xtreme-4x4-Sport

or his website: http://xtreme4x4sport.com.au/

If you look at his profile and then search started threads you will find info posted from him in regards to the law changes in QLD

Mate all I can say is you run the risk if you don't do it legal, I've done it, 4inch suspension 2 inch body, not certified / engineered, but at the end of the day, if you have an accident regardless if its your fault or not they will be looking at your car and will not pay out on a claim if it not road legal.

Cheers

Hey mate - 4" or 5" is up to your personal use and preference - but in terms of the insurance issue - IF you find an insurer who will insure your lift AND IF you advise them and get it in writing you will be covered. But you MUST get it in writing on your policy. The one thing you haven't mentioned is what you want to use the Patrol for? Looks, hardcore, touring, etc?

Thanks Todd, I actually know Dave from years ago when I had my last patrol so I'll have have to get back in touch.

And Jas I plan to do the cape and some general touring/camping but as my property backs onto the beerburrum state forest there will be a fair bit of hardcore stuff in there as well

Nice mate - sounds like you need two Patrols! A tourer and a hardcore one!

Yep X2

Life is Good ;)

You will have to make a compromise somewhere in your setup or build two cars.

Grab a GQ for your back yard and the GU for theTourer.

5" lift to run 33s is simply ridiculous....Even a 4" lift will not really be necessary.

Here is a pic of my "Tourer" in this pic is is running 285/75/16 (33s) on a 3" lift with Drop Boxes

You would have a Better setup car for your hard stuff out the back running a 3" lift and 35s! it will be a Beast. Keep it as low as possible to get the tyres under it for Great touring. Long Travel shocks and good amounts of Droop will see you go most places.

Depending on your front bar your approach angle will be your limitation anyway ;)

33"s till my current tires r flogged then 35" but I'm leaning towards 4" lift with dropped radius arms, the blokes at superior today told me that driving over 60ks with a super flex arm is a pretty wild experience and not ideal if it's not a dedicated offroad car

that is true . I have 4inch drop superflex arms and it is a bit of a pig on the road. you could drill and tap holes to refit the sway bar for on road. if you have the $$ get a long arm kit aswell. they are definatly worth it.

What are you wanting to do with the setup? I only ask cos there arent many tracks that I have driven with 35's and a 5" lift that I could drive when I had 33's and a 2" lift. A GU and particular a ute have room for 35's with a 2" lift and if your really concerned you could grab a 2" body lift and apart from the 35's it will be legal. With some bump stop and shock mount mods there is now reason why you couldnt get similar flex to that of a 4 or 5 inch lift. Then grab a front locker and you will just about go anywhere.

Ideally I'd like a hardcore truck that's comfortable to tour in lol, but at this stage it looks like I'll be going a with a superior 4" Amanda extreme lift with dropped arms and just buy the super flex arm to throw in for a long weekend at lcmp or when ever I feel like, and 35" tires and twin locked, so any pros or cons u might know about arb or tjm lockers r quite welcome also

You'll get most places with a 2" or 3'' Lift , Going up to 5" running 33"s would make it look like a skate board IMO
Summurising 2" or 3" lift with 33"s good all round combo, thats my 2 cents worth

you'll easily fit 35's under a 2 inch lift on a gu. but stick with the 4 in i reckon.

I very much doubt you will find an insurance company to insure you if your patrol is not road legal ( engineered / certified ) for the lift. How many people here insured with a lift above the VSI allowance and not engineered / certified and believe there insurance company will pay out on a claim????? Even if its in writing, and I doubt an insurance company would right "we will cover you even if your car isn't road legal!...............................think again, because they won't.

Cheers mate, the kit i got here http://www.bigo4x4.com.au/default.asp?page=suspension was the $3080.00 one and fitted myself. I use an auto locker from 4wd systems (LoKKa) and am happy as a pig in poop http://www.4wdsystems.com.au/index.php?id=29

I went 5 inch springs knowing that they will sag over time which they have. Im looking at around 3-4 in the front now (V8 xrox bar and winch on the front) and 4-5 in the back. But with a full tank and the gear in the back it drops a bit....
Running 33's and ran 35's during comps not drama's, extending the pump stops held with rubbing....

The superoir flex arms are great for the job they do but on road I have heard mixed reviews. But at the end of the Day anything that come out of Superoir's workshop is good gear.
I will be getting my lift mod plated so will send you a PM to see how I go.
