I dunno Jonathan have you seen the latest 4WD action DVD? Camera car had second battery in the back and it caught fire and made a a right mess of the car really put me off the idea because that was my original plan

Bloodyaussie
16th January 2013, 09:57 PM
You know why... because they are a bunch of drongo's...... they had one of those dodge boxes that was just jammed in behind the seats.. bloody idiots.

Winnie
16th January 2013, 10:02 PM
I will have a look at your setup next week mate and pick your brain a bit

Drewboyaus
16th January 2013, 10:03 PM
Don't think it would be worth hardwiring if I've only got a single battery?? There's no way I'd easily get a second battery under my bonnet, thinking more ahead for the next car

Piece of cake mate.....fits no probs under the hood of my TB42. Mind you, I don't have mine on gas so I don't know if that causes a problem.
As BA said though, it takes about an hour to do. Maximum. Especially if there are a few helping out doing different bits if the job.

Yep you only get fire from wiring when you get a dead short. Drongos it is mate.

If your putting a battery inside your cab then it should be a sealed Gel battery only which can be mounted upside down if you like and no spill risk and no fumes while its charging.

I'm thinking of putting 2 batteries inside the cab of the GQ to run a 24v setup for the winch. Do it right and there is no problem.

I was planning to come down for a day but i wont be camping, could you guys tell me what i will need to bring with me or have on my trol as a minimum just to wheel around for the day??

Winnie

Nothing really, a standard troll would be able to follow us on some of the tracks. What lift and tyres are you running?

Rated recovery is the minimum.. front and back.

Long way to go for the day mate.... takes hours to get where we are!!

Bob
17th January 2013, 11:13 AM
Whats with this Rated Recovery business.
I wont have Rated Recovery on my Vehicle

Tbh mate you will struggle and do damage on a lot of the tracks we will be doing. For the most part you will be okay, common sense should prevail

Tbh mate you will struggle and do damage on a lot of the tracks we will be doing. For the most part you will be okay, common sense should prevail

DW i should be right, theres nothing better then a challenge, just need to take it nice and slow mate. No need for heroics and i'm sure with all your experience and guidance even a blind man could drive thru with ease!

Bloodyaussie
17th January 2013, 12:00 PM
If you plan to do any of the harder tracks we ask that you have rated recovery points or risk damage if you get stuck and you have to be recovered.

The rear is not so much of an issue as long as you have a tow set up as many of us have removable hitch points we can use on other cars but the front is a different story??

It is not up to me to explain rated recovery points but the onus is on the driver to know what is expected at a minimum .

I remind you all that this is not a club run but a meet up of a few mates going for a drive and any damaged suffered is off your own back.

And last we are here to have fun in a safe way!!!!!!!!

Bloodyaussie
17th January 2013, 12:04 PM
Both, if you pull the car from one side you risk twisting the chassis and this does happen.

Alitis007

Seriously though, what about a beach run??? I'm not fussed where we go but I've never been beach driving...

There are minimal places in Victoria where you can drive on the beaches unfortunately mate. In fact, hardly anywhere these days...

Depending on how bad the fire is what other options/camp spots are down there.....Coopers Creek, any others???

Winnie
17th January 2013, 02:56 PM
Yeah there's coopers ck, Walhalla but I don't know of any spots we could all camp

Bloodyaussie
17th January 2013, 02:56 PM
Only beach is near S.A and you need permits through the 4wd club that manages it??

I dont know enough good spots to make suggestions ??

Bob
17th January 2013, 02:58 PM
are there any places along the Thomson River where we can camp ???

Are you there Roofy ??

AB
17th January 2013, 03:00 PM
We might have to get back to this thread tomorrow in regards to a back up plan depending on what happens with the fire today, how much it destroys, etc.

Umm....Doesnt look too good actually.....Its been classified as a medium fire, 7 vehicles are there now and it says the size is 80HA.....

Bloodyaussie
17th January 2013, 03:09 PM
This bushfire is out of control.
This message applies to the town of Aberfeldy and the Donnelly Creek area.
Campers and other visitors in the areas north of Walhalla and in the Donnellys Creek and Aberfeldy areas should leave the area immediately
The following roads are now closed:
At Matlock, at the corner of Walhalla Road and Warburton-Woods Point Road
At the Thompson Dam Wall on the Thompson Dam access track
North of Walhalla at the corner of Binns Road and Walhalla Road

Robe is S.A is the only place closest. Nowhere in Vic apart from the dunes at Portland but you must get a temp membership with the Portland dune buggy club by memory. Don't know of any down Gippsland way. 90mile beach would be good but i think its out of bounds for 4 wheelers.

That's a good call considering after today the weather will be much milder until sometime about Thursday next week when it goes back up for a day to about 36 and then gets milder for our weekend away.
There is time to get it put out....hopefully

I think a mostly dry change coming through Melbourne in the morning so a few hours later for the fire affected area.

That Fire will take more than a Week to clear up all Hot Spots as it is in Timbered Country.

Thinking Caps on for an alternative Site.
I was thinking the Murray but unfortunately no 4WDriving

Winnie
17th January 2013, 04:25 PM
I'm up for anything. The fire is now up to Binns Rd which is near Walhalla

Alitis007
17th January 2013, 04:25 PM
Wouldn't there be some good places after Geelong like around the Otways ?? Or surrounding areas?

Drewboyaus
17th January 2013, 04:26 PM
Well, why don't we try somewhere completely different......
That whole area will be pretty much toast (not meaning to be flippant).
Has anyone done the Grampians? Apparently some great aboriginal rock art out there to be found (I think some of the oldest in the country)
I think the 4wding is only ok but might be an interesting adventure...

I did Rocklands reservoir at Christmas which is just West of the Grampians. Only 30 minutes from Grampians I think?

Mt Cole would be great too

Where do you want to camp around there?
Sheep yard's ok but will be busy as bloody Bourke street.
About a km before you get to Sheepyard, Blackbird flat is quite a good spot. Most folks drive straight past on the way to Sheepyard. It's on the river, you'd easily fit all the trucks.....we had 8 in there on queens birthday weekend with heaps of other spaces.

What do you think BA? Probably don't camp at Craigs.. but perhaps in the local area?

I haven't been there much, only sheepyard flat and that was quite a while a go.

Bloodyaussie
17th January 2013, 05:00 PM
Ok I will start a new topic with details..... but where exactly???

No dogs though???

mudski
17th January 2013, 05:02 PM
Sheepyards is huge and quite long. Big camp area's for around 10k's along the river. There will be a few people there I reckon but I hope its not like easter or cupweekends up there where every man and his dog is there. Just over the hill from sheepyards there is Fry's hut. Probably a footy oval sized area, maybe bigger and just past there is tobacco flat. No dunnies though and is ONLY accessible by 4wd. All along the Howqua river.
Tunnel bend is a good place to take the kiddies too! As long as they don't care about getting there feet wet you go through a long man made tunnel which was made back in the gold days.
Plus my 80l engel is NOT big enough for everyones drinks. Just mine :)

Winnie
17th January 2013, 05:04 PM
Talking to a mate at work and he said up that way pineapple flat would be our best bet

Bloodyaussie

I can leave mine at home but others??

mudski
17th January 2013, 05:09 PM
I was just thinking the same but have never camped there. I don't know what the grounds are like and what river is there. But its closer to Craig's though.

I dont want AB to pike because he cant bring the dogs so after he has worked out some shit then we will see what options we have.

Sheepyards is state forrest so dogs are allowed there. Plus, do a google image search on sheepyard flat. Plenty of pics showing oodles of room. and then do the same search of Fry's flat, which is the next area there...

Is the dog issue related to where we camp or just not allowed in NP at all?

Ok many phone calls and discussions between the powers that be and the decision is ..... WOODS POINT

Now all decisions are final as this could go on forever with everyones idea of the perfect place.

Woods point will be less crowded than most and has some brilliant tracks.

A new thread will start letting people know!!!
