Hi AB and mods - is there any chance you could add a sub-section to the Intro's section called Beginners or similar? I have been compiling some of the common threads that seem to be asked by a lot of newcomers (exhausts, 2" lifts, recovery gear, general mechanical definitions, etc) - might be a good idea to have these in a separate section for reference for beginners and others?

Just a thought - was going to post them up in the general and appropriate sections, but thought if some of the entry-level stuff was all contained in the same area it might help some out and also stop a little of the double-posting, and make it easier to search?

Any thoughts guys?

Jas

Thanks Jas

I think this has some merit for sure. We obviously still want people to join though but i see the value in something like you describe.

Even a Sticky at the top called "Beginners Quick Links" or something and all it has is 10 or 15 links to the most common questions??

could be good.

Cheers for your input. any chance you can pm AB with your list or even post it here and others may add to it for the stickie.

Cheers

Or you could just do that ;)

Nice one Bob ;)

Hey guys - something we could do is have it only visible to registered members? Something like what Bob has put above but what I was planning was to compile the info from multiple threads on each topic into one. One of the issues is that, for example, there are multiple threads on say 2" lifts, but every now and then a new bit of info gets added to a new thread. I was planning to update them periodically with new info?

Good idea Jas, but I think all this is getting blown way out of proportion, and im not blaming anyone for this, its just a matter of opinion thats all. we all have different ways of looking at things.
This has been occurring since the site began. If you look back through the archives you will find that even the long term regulars do the same thing. Threads that were started back in 2010 are started again and again because people just can't be bothered searching back or dont know how too. I spend quite a bit of time searching the archives and it makes me laugh how many times it happens, but unfortunately IMO I think it's just the nature of the beast. Pointing the finger for something so trivial. We are trying to build memberships, all this ranting so to speak is not good PR for someone who stumbles across the site and was thinking of joining. We don't want it to become like other forums where you feel uncomfortable posting a Q, but in my eyes that's where all this is heading. By all meens PM Andy with your idea and it is a good idea (something Bob started a while back with his index to useful threads). I think if it were made a sticky in the intro section then maybe this could all be put to rest and move on. Rant over as I have exceeded my 2cents worth, now up to $2.
Cheers

P.S sorry I posted this in the wrong thread, I guess it should be in the general rant thread. Apologies from I

Hey wild - I actually agree with you. My reason for this is not because multiple posts upset me - more so to help out the beginners/new people to the site. I love forums where you have a "please read here first" section because I reckon you learn a lot from just general browsing of topics that have been common to others (even if they weren't questions you were thinking of!).

Didn't mean to spark up an issue - more just something I have been thinking of to help out - and definitely not aimed to stop people asking questions as that's what forums are all about!

All good mate, and by no meens was i accusing you of sparking up an issue, i just think all this ranting is getting blown out of proportion. as i said maybe i should of posted in the rant thread as i was venting my opinion, but again there are a couple of threads now covering the same subject, just under different titles.
As said all good mate, its a top site that grows by peoples ideas.
Keep up the positive thinking mate.

Jas

Sorry Jas, ..... Tutorial is good for the more mature members (lol not many of them around hahahaha) (Joking) its one of those educational / teaching words lol,
and people would think blah blah, and wouldnt read it, (eg; i have been a member since 2010 and not once have i looked at the video tutorial section, probably pretty good section but the name just dosnt attract me) again nature of the beast...*L*
I think Bob has hit the nail on the head, Index to useful threads.... or maybe a sticky in the intro section on how navigate your way around the site.. just athought mate.

Yep x2 on the "index of useful threads". It's all we need. No doubling up on threads

Agree with all the points above but also think the opportunity to ask a question (that might have been asked before) is a great chance for a new member to begin engaging with the great folk on here.
I also think that even if a question has been asked before you can often get a different perspective depending on who answers the question....perhaps a new member who has had a different experience to previous posters.....
Just a thought.

Yep, totally agree with you there Andrew.

Also another thought:
I ask questions because I don't know something.... I really appreciate learning stuff from all you knowledgable folk and then I can then pass that onto others.
New members asking new questions is fine by me. We all do it.
They aren't just new dumb questions they are a start of a new conversation.

Jas I love the idea but can't see that it will actually solve the problem of double up threads

Most new members will not even bother to read a "Please Read Here First", there is already is a "Please Read Here First" thread in the introductions Category as a Sticky, but probable could do with a clean up and an some things added

Cheers

The main issue with doubling posts in relevant sections is ,
1 . People dont, wont,or cant read posts past the first page
2 . People cant ,or wont sit there for a few minutes to again read ,and perhaps search an answer
3 . What i call a part or ask about is different to perhaps what you call a part, hence a few threads regarding the same thing
4 . People cant read
5 . People want the answer now .....
6 . See a pattern somewhere above ???????
If every answer for every question, irrelevant to what you,me the next person calls it pertaining to every issue was answered in a second or two, what would be the point of forums ???

Hey guys - I get all your points above but the reason I brought this up wasn't to stop the asking of question - heck I know I've asked dumb questions that have been asked a couple of times before. My though was more to have a reference section for new people to refer to as well as ask questions. More like a wikipedia of Nissan Patrol stuff. This was not to stop the posting of questions (even double ups) but to provide a section for members and new people to refer to. Call it a sticky, link to cool reference stuff, etc - the main thing was to enhance the forum for those people who have a general question which has been asked and been answered before to find it easily. This will still promote new membership (no different than non-members searching the threads) and will also promote the google indexing (more pages = more hits). I know there has been a bit of talk lately (rants) about people not searching for stuff and just posting questions - this thought wasn't about that at all - but was about trying to help out. :) And no offence - but a link to threads is not what some people look for.
