Olgeta,

I have recently had a noise while under load coming from the rear engine area. No noise when coasting out of gear or with clutch in. My thought was an exhaust leak as it occurs only under load in all gears and it sounds like one. If you go looking for trouble then normally you will find it.
My bus is a '96 RD28 turbo wagon.

1. There appears to be a leak from the turbo exhaust manifold. Carbon and crap evidence in place, but as usual it looks like you have to drop the manifold(s) to get the lock plates off to undo the 4 simple nuts to replace the gasket, not to mention the exhaust pipe manifold with rusted nuts and studs.
2. As I felt around the exhaust manifold studs where it bolts to the head I found that the forward most and rearmost studs were loose - not loose but broken. I suspect that someone has been there before me and broken them and left them swinging in place.

My questions:

Should I take her to an exhaust specialist for the gaskets and stud repair, or can I manage this at home with a few well chosen swear words, busted knuckles and more studs broken along with a couple of eazy-outs? Whoever named those little pieces of equipment had a good sense of humour.

Having apparently answered my own question can anyone recommend a good exhaust specialist in Townsville? I assume an exhaust expert deals with broken studs all the time.

Mate,

As one who has been down this road on a TD42, I have had no end of trouble due to cheap and shoddy work carried out by the previous owner, do yourself the biggest favour and take it to a good mechanic you trust, one slip with a drill or a broken easy out and you could be looking at a new head.

Good luck with it Bruce

Regards

Mark
