View Full Version : Dumb question about bolts and screws - but something I've always wondered

OK - here's something I have always wondered about idly but never really looked into. Have done quite a bit of work to cars, etc but never really understood about bolts. Don't get me wrong - I know there are different types, etc but have never really understood what they are - I know they have all sorts of names, ratings, etc - but generally I just go somewhere and say I need so and so or take one down to match it up.

So - anyone have good info on bolts and the different types, particularly in reference to a Patrol? For example - the bolts (or rather screws) that hold on the guards are an interesting tapered screw - I have no idea what they are called?

Also - where do you guys source your bolts and screws from?

Most bolts will have marks on the head which you decifer to figure out what you have.
I go to a specialist bolt place called the METRIC MEN, they are in Keilor Vic. plus they answer any questions I have.
Other shops are called things like the BOLT BLOKE, KEABLES. As for those tapered bolts probably so the robot on the assembly line
can start bolt easier. Great and very interesting subject. BOLTS aren"t just BOLTS, you'll need the right bolt for any particular job.
As they are all designed to do a different job

Every bolt will have a torque rating as well as a use by date {aviation bolts}

Jas,

If you go to a reputable auto parts store, Champion do a range of after market bolts, screws and assorted fittings for replacing lost broken stuff on your vehicle.

I also use a local garden centre(that's right they sell plants) as they have a fantastic range of imperial and metric bolts, from hi tensile right through to stainless.

My tip of the day. Do not use stainless steel bolts for anything structural. If you use stainless on other parts of vehicle, always use never sieze or it will.

No such thing as a dumb question. If anyone is after bolts and screws etc that they really want to know that they are buying the real deal. Click the above link and then click on hardware and follow the bouncing ball.

Those plastic screw bit on the guards are called scrivets by memory. Supercheap have a small range but I found Rarespares keep a quite extensive range of these types of things too.

In Sydney I use a company called Nepean Boltmaster, they are only Sydney based and specialise in nuts, bolts ,fasteners power tools etc

Just look up in the yellow pages for fastener suppliers around your area, you might have someone local 2 you that specialise in them and know what there talking about.

Where do I get bolts from for the Patrol..... well that depends on what its for, general nuts and bolts I get from above place but for more specific screws like the ones that hold the guards on I would buy online from various part suppliers that deal with Nissan spares, A lot of parts like that are used on various Nissan Models not just patrols.

If you can get the part number ( I use Nissan Fast ) type that part number in to Google, you will normally find someone selling that part.

Also Nizzbits would probable be able to help out on fasteners your local mob can't get.

Cheers
