smokin under load

my old girl ( the truck) has been pumping out quite a bit of black smoke lately towing caravan up hills,and power seems less ----some history---had a dp chip fitted 12 mths ago,has been great with extra power under load until recently & the only thing different is about a month ago i mistakenly connected my auxillary battery wrong way round after cleaning---realised some hrs later--must have tripped the computer as the sub tank light stayed on and pump would not work, a auto elec on the way re -set comp & all ok with that issue !!! anyone think this may have affected the chip as in shut it down? have also tried morey,s fuel additive ---smoke killer !!!!----just had a full on service as in all lubricants---fuel filter--oil filter etc---have run a k&n air filter for a while and regularly clean as have not got a snorkel fitted,(the red dust in w.a is something else),and as others will appreciate the intake on patrols is in a bugger of a spot. any clues ?????

Do you have a boost and pyro guage if not you should invest in one. Sounds like intercooler leak or hose split if all your work carried out properly

dirty injectors or faulty ones
remove the chip might help to see what is going on

thanks to contributors for replies re --smokin under load----have not fitted boost or pyro gauge,but will certainly keep in mind as seems it would be the best way to keep an eye on performance especially whilst towing-----disconnected the dp chip today and gave it a good run, and smoke was much less probably 70%, right thru the range of accelerating and gear changes----power seemed ok too but was not towing---have had no time to check intercooler or hoses as yet !!! will investigate further and post the results-------thanks again-----cheers bill
