Hey guys,
Just starting my research project before I go ahead... Here we go. Currently we have a 1990 carby gq tb42. I wish to swap over the engine and here is what I want out of it.... It is my daily driver so needs to be fuel economical, that's a big must. I want power for towing and bush play. It is mainly a weekend warrior and also our family tourer. Parts must be easily accessible and cheap as possible. Maybe a v6, v8 vt commodore motor? I dunno but let's get this thread pumping... Go... Lol

F that.. 3L r33 skyline Godzilla engine. an imported half cut with loom for $5000...
Better on fuel than the tb42, and enough power to strip 35's to the wire...

Thats a 2.6ltr mate, what your after is a NUR spec R34 GTR motor. They have a RB30 block with RB26 head which makes a hybrid 2.8ltr with a pair of Garrett 35R's should see around 800bhp and you can still buy the complete bottom end ex japan NOS for roughly 8g's or my personal favorite ls1 stock internals twin turbo set up running 12psi 400rwkw with the right custom intake manifold and fuel system !!

The masses have it to an extent
Yes the TD42 turbo will be fairly easy on the swap , mite have enuf boogie for play and towing
BUT
How much towing do you really do ???, do you really drive it every day ???
For the cost of the TD engine complete running turboed there are many options out there thatll leave the diesel in the dirt
Why not inject the TB42,bit better on the juice, and in stock guise will leave the diesel way behind towing up hills
Another option is the later 4 L ford motor, cheap as chips to buy, everywhere, and put out 148 KW in the ED falcon series and more in the AU series, the newer ones have 190 KW, throw a snail on that
All boils down to, how much you have to spend, how much work you can do, how long can the rig be off the road
Too many options without a budget

You'd be mad to use the EB-AU SOHC 4L when the BA onwards DOHC 4L is an option.

Towing is only here and there... Camping trips basically so not a major selling point. It is my daily driver so fuel consumption is a must. Efi the tb42 that's already there hey? Anyone done this and how much? I'd be so wrapped to get rid of that carby! Was thinking that is a good option and maybe a turbo on her later on... What do you guys think?

IMO probably not worth it, your fuel consumption will go down but bugger all, makes it hard to justify.
