G'day
Looking into a GQ SWB.
I've found one that's straight gas turbo.
Do they hold up? Are they roadworthy in Victoria? Any engineers required etc?
What do they go like?
Any help is appreciated!
Jake

Hey mate, from what ive heard you do need an engineers cert because youve modified the fuel system completely but should pass because gas is cleaner, should perform better particularly if the head was rebuilt for gas ( You would be mad not to rebuild it) as the heads do not like heat and lpg burns far hotter than petrol. hopefully someone else has some more info on it for ya.

There's a fair few out there on straight LPG running the T3/T4 turbos and producing good power and reasonable economy on open road. I bought a complete engine this way when I got mine but as said, head needs to be machined. As LPG gets burned quicker under load, if you have a heavy right foot then expect to be filling often - 90 litre tank will probably see you get around 450klms on the road, and around 300 if you're lucky around town - I was averaging under 300 (over 30 litres per hundred) and subsequently, I've gone back to straight petrol. Bigger tank, better fuel control through an aftermarket ECU and swap of injectors etc. Off road is where the LPG is a let down if you're doing hard level tracks - it burns like no tomorrow ... I'm talking up to 40 litres per hundred on soft sand, low range work, etc ... obviously you're not doing 100 klms of soft sand usually, but just be mindful that a tank goes quick on beaches, and if you're away, LPG isn't something you can carry in jerry cans!

Definite pros and cons, and definitely has to be engineered.

I do a lot of high country work and hound hunting flap fuel range was the first thing I thought of. I only had 400km range with my last ute and was always carting Jerry's around... That and the engineers would put me off I think.
Are the TB42's slow? I don't need a ultra fast car, but I don't want a slug...

The short answer is probably a yes mate, TB42 is a great reliable engine but you wouldn't really accuse it of being a fast, it puts power when and where it needs to be but no more, the TD42 turbo is more expensive but you can get them going pretty well and you get the benefits of better fuel economy and you will probably make the extra outlay back in the first couple of years depending on k's driven.

hey mate. im running a tb42 turbo straight gas, and it runs like a dream. plenty of power anywhere its needed. had it running 208kw rear wheels with 35in tyres when, I was testing it.(crazy to run that all the time though) but fuel is a big scare if u dont have the large tanks, im getting about 850km to my 160lt of gas. as for certs in qld I just had to have a gas cert done as a check for leaks and sefty. but if its aleady on gas it should just be in the roadworthy.

If the car has dedicated gas and petrol side of it has been completely removed and the exhaust is under 90db it will pass any emission / epa test without an engineers
