Bloody bugger, after my Rubicon trip I noticed one hub starting to weep. I t was nothing too bad until I looked this morning and it got bad fast!!!!!

I have priced up kits and wondered which way I should go, cant really afford the full kit just at the moment with all bearings and seals $300 but was thinking of seals and king pins for $195 or just seals for $135.

Was going to pick up kit tomorrow as I will do it this week end (Cup weekend)

Any thoughts... found the write up done on doing the hubs and will use that as a guide, I have done hubs on my Hilux but not a Patrol as yet.

Hey bud,

where is it leaking? if it is at the back of the swivel then it will just be the inner axle seal and you could get away with just replacing this and repacking your wheel bearings until your ready to do the lot.

I would not bother with the half kit. If your going to do your King Pin bearings (recommended) then do the lot bud.

If it is just a leaking inner axle seal then just do that for the time being and cash up and then do the full rebuild.

It will just be this seal

Unfortunately its the last thing out and first thing back in. You are likely able to get that done in an hour a side! maybe a little longer if you have never done it but not that big a deal. While its apart then clean your wheel bearings and repack them and bolt back together.

Note that the leaking oil is Diff Oil and it will likely have washed out your front wheel bearing so it will need to be cleaned and repacked.

once you start stripping king pin bearings its a MUCH BIGGER JOB. !!!

here is the part you need

eBay GU / GQ Inner Axle seal (http://www.ebay.com.au/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=m570.l2736&_nkw=axle+seal+GQ)

Hope that helps.

Note that pic above is the last pic in the first post by Tony in the link you posted.

That inner oil seal is not overly easy to get out (without a seal puller) and you need to be very precise putting it back in and also in sliding the axel back through so as to not damage the seal. If its just those seals, literally a 90 minute job and from memory, I paid $9 a seal when I replaced mine and the lads ... i.e. if you're half handy, it's relatively quick and cheap.

I made up a tool to push them in (as its awkward inside the trunion housing), and I've done about 6 sets of them on various peoples cars so got sick of stuffing them as some are a super tight fit and the seal is reasonably fragile.

Welded flat steel onto a hammer socket.

1/2" drive or whatever you have an extension for.

21650

Attach extension, sit it flat against the seal as you're reseating it, and tap the end of the extension making sure it goes in flush - never stuffed a seal since!! lol

21651

Not suggesting make one up for the odd job, but it got to the point where I needed something as I stuffed a few trying to reseat them with the wrong tools.

Good luck with it mate ...

If your going to do this then what scottie has said is correct. that seal is a dog. getting it out and then putting it in is a bugger and it is very fragile.

Do yourself a favour and buy a seal driver kit. Especially if you intend to do the full rebuild down the track! You will thank yourself

Check this bargain out!

I carry my bearing packer full of grease with the lid on in the rear drawers of my GQ. Grease on hand and ready to pack a bearing should i or a friend smash a CV or wheel bearing!.

Sweet!

Ok ordered the driver kit... hate you... more bloody money spent!!!

Will just get the seals as I just paid $280 to get my air conditioning fixed on the old girl and it is icy cold.

I was a motorcycle mechanic for 15 years so know how to pack grease into bearings!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks so far guys....

I made my own bearing packer, Used a grease nipple with a 1/8"BSP thread, an air line fitting which is, 1/8" female thread (to screw on the nipple) and it has a 1/8" nut and olive on the other side where you put a length of 1/8" nylon tube into. Tighten all up, and the nylon tube fits right in between the bearing rollers and you just pump away.

No more stickeh' hands.

I really should find it an take a photo as I am chit at describing things.

Ok picked up seal kit today and am now at the mercy of the seal driver to turn up before the week end... never needed one of these to do the Hilux??????

I got taught the trick to greasing bearings as an apprentice motorcycle mechanic and do not get too dirty at all so having another bloody tool for this job does not appeal to me.........!!!!

I think with this hot weather we are having it is causing the hubs to start pissing out oil now... all over my bloody parking spot!!!

I am just going to re do the one hub as I want to fit a diff locker soon so will do the3 locker plus bearings and so on in one big hit.

I am pissed as I was doing a love job for a bloke I am mates with at his factory with the idea I would get his Triton ute to find out he let the rego lapse 6months now ..... I am using my GQ as a work car and it is too much and I need a cheap work car!!!??????

one thing I do when replaceing the swivel hubs, is once it is all apart I give the outside of the knuckle a sand and clean then a coat of paint ($2 spray can) so when you put the new felt seal on it has a nice smooth face to work on.

Yes I need a cheap run about..

Did the hubs today with not too much drama except the filler for the diff would not come out.. ended up getting heat onto it and a cold chisel.

The only poo hole was at the start while I was pulling things apart I missed a swing with the hammer and nailed the thread pretty badly, at the time I thought oh shit I will clean that up at the end but it turned out to be more damaged than I thought.

Tomorrow the wife is working and I am home with both kids and no car and I need to get myself (cant believe I never bought one in the past) a tap and die to fix the bloody thing.

Frustrating that I did all the work and it is ready to go except for one bloody thread.. blah!!!!!!!!!!
