You`re not wrong there and the first time I gotten a bite, I thought wtf was that it must be big. When I wound the line in after the second bite had gone, I went to bait the hook again and there was only the shank left. Showed the gf and no sooner I did that, she had a strike and had a battle on her hands. What are they like to eat? I have read mixed reviews on the web, more in favour of eating them than not.

Although I have not eaten one myself, I see many people target them off piers for a meal.
Being in the trevally family it should be good eating.
But different trevelly species all taste different.
Like the giant trevally was delicious although was a small one.
Then a tea leaf trevally for me was not so tasty, although still good to eat. Just different flesh and texture and taste.

I was fishing for whiting off the beach and ended up with the darts. They were all returned back to the water, because I didn`t know the species at the time and assumed they were Swallow Tail Darts by the name on the back of the measuring ruler and the look of the tail they all had. So I played it safe. A google search helped me out.

My thoughts would be specialist blackfish ( ludrick reels ) you don't cast as such . Pay out a bit of line flick and move along with the tide .

TD - The reels were my gf fathers and he loved his fishing at any opportunity he could get when life was quiet on the farm. He had quite a few rods too of various sizes, which tells me he had a few species in mind for each rod. A bamboo / cane style of beach rod, a boat rod, 10 foot rod which is getting new guides etc attached to it at the moment and another rod of about 5 feet long.

Gaddy - I was told by an employee at a fishing store he thinks it was to do with blackfish (Ludrick reel), but wasn`t sure as he hasn`t seen a reel like the one I had. He had said to tug a bit of line out and drop it in to the water. On the web, there`s a site that shows how to cast some thing similar to the reel I have and I`ll know for sure when I rig it up to a rod if it works. Another site said some thing about streaming a bit of line off at first and flick it out, but may be difficult if doing it on rocks when waves are washing over them, as it may tangle the line. I`ll have to buy some new line, as I have used up my 600 metre line of 25 Lb (14.4 Kg) on an Alvey.

I still have dads full fibreglass surf rod its a Jarvis Walker "Kilcunda"
early 60s maybe even from the late 50s
which ironic as that where I grew up. Ive had it fully recoed and will never part with it.
Also have a full fibreglass Jarvis Walker Black Queen still the best bream trout rod IMO.
None of those hollow fibreglass rods back then.
We used to make our own surf rods from a single piece of Indian bamboo 17' to 19' long

three dogs - All it has on the rod is Angler Rods, Black Magic Extra, Made In Coloundra, Qld, By Richard Hilton. FUJI. On the handle where the reel sits, it has Fuji Reel seat 22 and that`s all it has. The length of it is 302 centimetres long, which is near enough to 10 feet and is a two piece rod. I`ll take a photo of it one day and post it up. Apparently Richard Hilton of Angler Rods works with Ken at Pacific Composites from what I have read on the web. It must have some age to it, as it was my gf fathers rod and she has no idea when he bought it. I can`t ask him either, as he`s long gone now to ask.

No reel as it hasn't been used in 20 years.
Any recommendations as to a suitable reel?
I have no experience as a fisherman, in fact I am lucky to catch a cold in winter, so I will be asking a few questions here in the future.
4WD and fishing seem to be a natural pairing.

Are there any numbers/weights marked on the rod? If it's the same as the newer one with that name that googling turns up (8' 2pc 2-6kg) look for a 2500-4500 size spin reel (depending how much line you want & your comfort with the weight of the reel) with 8-10lb mono line. I use a Daiwa Saltist, but this may be a little on the topside of what you'd want to spend if you don't fish much. Penn Spinfisher V might be another to consider - but again maybe pricey for your purpose.
Avoid the sales pitch for braid line - big $ & not worth it if you don't fish much.
4x4 and fishing definitely go hand in hand. The harder it is to get there, the less it should have been fished (in theory anyway...)

Thanks Avo - I never knew it's name. Just googled it n found out that's the usual spot when I'm down that way - although I err on the side of caution and generally fish the safer north facing side, rather than that nice slowly-sloping east facing side. (I can jump up a 2m ledge faster than I can out run those sneaky southerly swells washing up that east side...)

Yeah bloody awesome fish to catch! But the taste of it is not my liking. It was ok but its got nothing on three hour old fresh Golden Snapper or Barra. We are starting to plan our next trip up there, I reckon if I caught another Spaniard, I would release it. Unless it was bigger. Lol. This was far too big to kill and eat. It made around a 16, 1 inch thick steaks. A bloody lot of food for six people.

A nice 7 Lb, 61 cm Golden Perch caught by a mate at Copeton Dam over the weekend off the bank in 4 feet of water right at the camp. Couple of large Catfish as well, no luck with the Cod even though conditions were perfect for trolling lures.

After fishing the Glenelg in Nelson where there wasn't even a nibble, we drove up to Sapling Creek and immediately got a few large bites. I caught my first estuary perch and my son landed a nice bream. We threw back a quite a few under-size bream too.

Buy your spares while they're still available!

Did not realize they were to close down. IMO best real for beach fishing in / thru gutters with ganged up 6/0 with whole pillies (light running rig). Must look after them a bit better. Mainly fly fish for trout now a days (few good days in quiet places).

My mate Phil who some of you know found this reel at our normal camp at Bearii.
Ive emailed the museum and found out its a 1958 model that cost 2 pound 10 and 6 back in the day.
the company started in1933 and close in 1987. Alvey with their bakelite side casters finished them off.
Its a 4.5" Steelite side caster. got some very old Mitchell reels both trout and surf and some very old lures.
Ill make up a board a display them.
As Phil says who knows how long it was stuck in the mud on the banks of the murray

Steelite, a fine piece of engineering, noted the coil spring and actuated by the line run guide moment for locking the reel spool in position, and the drag tensioning star wheel (would presume) . Nice find and yes deserves a special place.

plus its left or right handed not bad , cause I think most ppl fish the wrong way ,
You should hold the rod with your dominant arm and wind with your weakest.
Being a right hander I wind with my left I used to wind with my right but found it easier winding left handed.
that should bring some comments lol

That is where fly fisher do it best, I am right hand dominate but control my fly line and reel with my left. A left hander(my fishing companion) does it the other way around.

Excellent combination for loch style fishing.

Note the reel position:

So what are you supposed to do if you catch a COD and have to kill it to remove hook or lure?

PeeBee

I would think you snip off the line for a hook and release, and for a lure, kill the fish and eat it. Simples!!!

.......Stop fishing for life Mudski mate and hand your GU over to fisheries :-) ! Honestly never had to slaughter a fish to get a hook out or just cut the line as close as possible. Them freshwater hooks will rust soon enough and Cod have massive IC bonnet scoops to eat on going!

Got to let the damn thing go with the lure still down it`s throat. Waste of a good feed if you ask me as they usually die anyway. Had this discussion with a Fishing Inspector before, he agreed it was a waste but the rules are the rules.................

A legal Cod has to be between 55 & 75 cm, had to let a 90 cm one go last season with a $37 lure stuck in it`s guts that I could not get out without killing it.

Fines are too heavy to risk keeping them.

COMPULSORY LIFE JACKET TRIAL HAS BEGUN 🌊

Rock fishers at Salmon Holes have been afforded a one month grace period before fines will be handed out for not wearing life jackets.

A 30-month trial, requiring anyone on the rocks at Salmon Holes to wear a type one life jacket started on January 1.

Since 1983, 13 people have died after being swept off rocks at the site.

Nathan Harrison, from the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, says from February, people will face fines of up to two-hundred dollars.

"Fisheries officers will be down there, so that anyone found without wearing a life jacket will be subject to a penalty of $200 in the first instance for a fist offence."

Well it was my second time back to the far north of the NT and OMFG! I could live up there in a heart beat. I need to gather the pics from my brother but here’s the list of the catch over the four days.
79470

Catching a 19lb Trevally on a lure in 1ft of water is absolutely amazing. The speed of these fish is blistering. The biggest Barra was only 68cm, when you hook one of these the way you need to land it is so different to any other fish it was kind of surreal on the first time as they like to jump out of the water. But the speed of the Trevally is next level.
I’ll get some pics up when I get them from my brother.

Haha! I didn't take any pics. I was too busy fishing. I just got a few from my dad, just need to get the rest from my brother.
Just a few from my Dad's phone.
First pic is me with a Trevally. Next is me and my brother at the "Hurt locker" and then my bro with a Barramundi. The hurt locker is aptly named and you are hurting within minutes of dropping you lure. God I love this place!!!

I had a great Australia Day weekend over in St Leonard’s and Queenscliff.

With extremely funny weather conditions

We were fishing with our rods out the same side we were drifting towards instead of behind the drift directions.
Either way it was working for us so we persevered with the mischief it was causing us.
Every now and then the line going under the boat to the side they were suppose to be on. LOL

Took my Nephew and my brother in-law Squid fishing with success both outings.

I took my father on a local fishing charter, today. Kev Treloar is the Man! He asked what fish we were targeting. With the agreement of the other passengers he took us to the North Shore near the Surrey River.

Within a minute of dropping anchor, Dad had a fish on. The variety of fish caught, was amazing. One lucky chap hauled in a Kingfish, but it was a centimetre under size. Trev also snagged a bluefin tuna but it threw the hook only metres from the boat. Wrasse, a gummy, trevally, pike, leather jackets, pinkies and a nice size schnapper topped off with some really good KG whiting were also brought in.

0418306714 Kev. 0408030064 Nick.

I would recommend them for a great day out.
