Just got back from Gunbower Island. Loved the heat and the river. I caught so many silver perch (nice sizes too) that they out-numbered the carp. It was hard to have to release the buggers, but I suppose it is a good sign that they're breeding their way back from extinction. I didn't get a cod, but Dad caught three; 38cm 55cm and 58 cm. All good, fit and healthy returned to grow up so we can catch 'em in the future. We found a really good sand bank, where we expected to get a yellow belly or two, but just caught a few more silvers. I really didn't want to leave, but the real world needed attention.

I caught heaps of Silver Perch last January at Chowilla and didn't catch any Carp, was frustrating to have to let them go.

Just got a letter from Wyndham council saying there has been some illegal and dangerous behaviour at the werribee south boat ramp (WSBR). They say "The behaviour involves individuals loosening tow bars and trailers attachments while parked at the WSBR..."

For those that use it, just keep an eye out.

I guess that's one way to get a new trailer.
I haven't receive this letter yet.
Do they mention how many thefts have occurred.

Nah nothing specific other than police will do more patrols :)

Nah nothing specific other than police will do more patrols :)

So in other words nothing.
Surely the $16 ramp fee would have to cover some sort of surveillance to be put up some where, oh wait no, that's means another thing for the council so it would never happen.
Even if and I mean IF the coppers do waste their time and drive down to the ramp to patrol more often, it's still little comfort as it is still the easiest place for thieves.

I agree. How hard to put a internet camera up like they do at other places. Even surfers get cameras :( but I guess we would have to pay extra for that and seriously cops patrolling isn't going to do anything.

Don't know about you but I get nervous being one of the only cars in that car park, like you say an easy place for thieves.

Oh well maybe we could send TD down to sort em out ;) :)

I have seen those lures in a tank, and they do look like a real fish. But for that price, I would be hesitant to use it in and around the snags where cod lurk.

When spinner baits first came out I brought one for $15 and headed to the Goulbourn river just under the Hume hwy,
On the northern bank there is a gum tree visible from the HWY, my spinner bait is in it, first cast LOL
Spat the dummy big time as these spinner baits were the next best thing at the time, Pulled out my red Celta and pulled in a 2.5lb redfin, sweet revenge

Not one that I would use, but I don't see why it wouldn't work.
If that swam past a cod's lair, it would surely get smashed.

If it feeks spongy when you push as shown in my awsome picture it's empty . If its hard enjoy , picture is underside 39680

I have had so much success with OAR-GEE lures. One of the best Murray Cod lures on the market. I, too, have had a lot of success with these lures. My favourite has to be the purple silver back with the yellow belly and red throat. 80% of my Cod using OAR-GEE lures were on this colour lure.

Also this River2Sea minnow Perch look lure is by far my best Cod lure.
Over the last three year has caught more Murray Cod than any other lure when fishing the 2m-3.5m depth of water.

Just heard that the channels are still being filled and that is also why the river is down. But heard that will be stopping soon and the river should rise again.

I know a bloke thats got one and he prefers that over his 18' bar crusher, he takes it out into open water but has a full on fishing one ( can't remember the brand) but its one of the only kayaks you can stand up in and is around 14' long. Its got the works with bait and storage tanks, inbuilt tackle box, rocket launches, sounder and gps, pretty much is a 1 man boat. When you launch it you detach the wheels and unfold the foot paddles and vise versa when your coming back in.

Have a Kyak you can lend for this. Many years ago I dropped 5 people at the tock bridge with airbeds at about 9am. We were camped at Carters Beach. They turned up at 10pm by car, they didn't even get half way. Lucky they got a lift from some thoughtful campers upstream.

---------

Murray River Spinnerbaits and Buzzbaits are Tournament Quality products that have been handcrafted in North East Victoria using the finest components available.

All lures are built on high quality - Mustard Ultra Point hooks.

All components such as swivels, clevis, blades, silicon skirts, plastic trailers are the finest products available and have been imported from the United States. As a result Murray River Spinnerbaits are one of the highest quality Spinnerbaits available in Australia.

Murray River Spinnerbaits and Buzzbaits have been designed especially for the local Murray Cod holding waters in North East Victoria (Built Extra Strong), but would be suitable and successful anywhere in either fresh or salt water. Over the past 7 years, Murray River Spinnerbaits have earned the reputation: "DEADLY WHEN WET".
In the past Murray River Spinnerbaits and Buzzbaits have been available at BCF stores across the country and more than 30 fishing tackle stores throughout Victoria and New South Wales where they retailed for up to $17.95 each.

As of September 2012, the team at Murray River Spinnerbaits have decided to no longer supply lures to BCF stores or any other tackle outlets and sell them exclusively via this website at a significant cheaper price, which will be a big win for all customers.

I too have never caught a Murray Cod on the Murray with a spinnerbait, but I have caught a couple decent yellow belly with them a few years back.
I only used them at the end of our trip and had no bait left on the boat.
But until I get myself a MinnKota on my tinnie, I probably won't do much spinnerbaiting.

No John, they want to change the slot limit from what it is now, which is minimum 600mm to maximum 1000mm.

Which fits right into perfect eating sizes.

Longliners accused of “dumping tonnes” of bluefin tuna
25 Jul 2014
By Fisho staff writers
LONGLINERS currently targeting southern bluefin tuna off the east coast are reportedly dumping large numbers of the prized fish because they don’t bring enough money at the markets.

A source with close links to the longline industry this week told Fisho that an east coast vessel recently unloaded about 10 tonnes of SBT but “dumped about the same amount of fish because they came up dead on the lines”.

As Fisho understands it, SBT that die on the longlines are worth less than fish brought on board alive. It’s understood the dead fish have inferior quality meat and don’t attract high prices at the fish markets.

Australian longline vessels targeting SBT are subject to strict quotas. Since they can only catch and sell as many fish as their quota allows, it makes financial sense for the boats to only keep prime quality tuna.

According to the source, it is “routine for tuna that die on the line to get cut off and thrown back so the boat can get a full quota of prime quality fish”.

It’s understood that some longlines can take many hours to retrieve with significant percentages of hooked SBT dying before they can be landed. So far this season, AFMA’s onboard observers have reported that around a quarter of SBT are dead when they were brought to the boat.

The source goes on to say that all or most of these dead fish would be “dumped”.

While the thought of these magnificent – and endangered – gamefish being wasted in this fashion is likely to cause outrage amongst the recreational fishing community, it seems the longline industry will come under increased scrutiny from next season.

Fisho approached AFMA CEO Dr James Findlay about what AFMA is doing to tackle the issue.

“The unreported discarding of SBT by longliners is an issue that AFMA has been very well aware of for some time,” Dr Findlay told Fisho yesterday.

“Unfortunately, there are still some instances where people are doing the wrong thing.”

Various management protocols – including access restrictions – have already been introduced to prevent the longline fleet from taking and discarding SBT while fishing for yellowfin, bigeye and swordfish, Dr Findlay said.

“These conditions prevent longliners who don’t hold SBT quota from fishing in areas and times when bluefin are likely to be caught.”

But Dr Findlay acknowledges that while these measures are having some impact, more still needs to be done to prevent vessels which do hold SBT quota “upgrading” their catch by dumping so-called “inferior” fish.

In order to address that issue, the AFMA chief made it clear that any commercial vessels catching SBT and throwing them back without reporting it were acting illegally.

“Any vessels we suspect of doing so will be investigated and may be prosecuted where there is sufficient evidence,” Dr Findlay said.

Information given to Fisho reveals that AFMA currently uses increased levels of observer coverage during the SBT run off the east coast to collect independent data on commercial SBT catches.

“The minimum at-sea observer coverage rate during the SBT run off the east coast is 20 per cent. Any mortalities that are reported by the observer but not reported by the vessel are deducted from the vessel’s quota,” Dr Findlay said.

“If the risk of unreported catch is still considered too high, AFMA increases the observer coverage requirements accordingly. This may go right up to 100 per cent.”

Fisho understands that observers cost about $1500 per day. Individual longline vessels are required to fully cover those costs.

“Thus there is an incentive for (the longliners) to make sure they have enough quota and are correctly managing their vessels,” Dr Findlay said.

“Despite this, we are aware that some boats will still try to get around the quota system from time to time. To address this, for next year’s SBT run off the east coast AFMA will require all longline vessels to carry an AFMA-approved, tamper-proof camera system that will enable us to monitor all catches of SBT and other species.

“We think these systems will be a game changer for Commonwealth fisheries management, especially when it comes to making sure vessels are complying with the rules,” Dr Findlay said.

“A majority of commercial fishing vessels do the right thing and realise the importance of compliance for the sustainability of Australian fisheries.

“Those illegally fishing are simply destroying their livelihood and that of their fellow fishermen which AFMA is seeking to protect.”

Anglers witnessing suspicious behaviour by longliners or other commercial fishing vessels should call 1800 CRIMFISH (1800 274 634).

The issue of some commercial operators allegedly dumping large numbers of bluefin comes as the federal Government is reportedly pressuring state fisheries departments to impose stricter recreational limits on the species.

Fisho has also been made aware that authorities are concerned that a small number of irresponsible recreational anglers may be “upgrading” their SBT catches. Fisho reminds anglers that SBT are prime candidates for C&R. We also make the observation that one 40-60kg SBT will supply enough fresh fish to feed an army …

I know nothing about longline fishing , but I find the comments about recreational fishers up grading interesting , in qld snapper have a limit of 4 and only 1 fish over 70 cm . I only ever fish outside with a mate who is a commercial Fisher ( rod and reel ) on any weekend day with good weather and a lot of boats on the water , you see alot for snapper to 3kg or so floating dead on the surface over the popular reefs where people are fishing to the bag limit and then upgrading and dumping the smaller but legal dead fish as they go

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2014-08-16/health-warning-over-fish-caught-west-of-sydney-harbour-bridge/5674960

Recreational anglers are ignoring warnings not to drop a line west of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, where scientists say fish could be contaminated with cancer-causing pollutants.

The first comprehensive study of how Sydney residents use the harbour has identified fishing "hotspots" west of the bridge, an area subject to health warnings.

Luke Hedge, from the Sydney Institute of Marine Science, was part of the team that spent 280 hours monitoring 570 sites across the harbour this year – from the Heads to the Lane Cove River and Homebush Bay.

The study looked into "where they drive their boats, where they fish, where they drop their anchors, how many people go to the beach - all these things that make Sydney such a unique place", Dr Hedge said.

The data, to be published later this year, has so far revealed many people are fishing west of the Harbour Bridge, on boats and from the shore.

PHOTO: Map of hotspots on Sydney Harbour shows people still catch fish west of the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
Dr Hedge said that "on a perfect Sydney day" up to 20 boatloads of fishermen could be found in each of the hotspots around the Lane Cove River and east of Cockatoo Island, and between 15 and 20 anglers fish from the wharves to the immediate west of the Harbour Bridge.

That was despite multi-lingual signs warning of the threat from dioxins – industrial pollutants washing out from Homebush Bay that can cause cancer.

Professor Emma Johnston from the University of New South Wales said the problem was not new.

"A factory released a large amount of dioxins around the Homebush Bay area for many years. So the sediment is a historical legacy of contamination," she said.

Fish eat creatures in the sediment around the Bay and then move around the harbour, she said.

"It's not going to kill you straight away, but the fish tissue contamination in Sydney Harbour was high enough for us to ban commercial fishing and to severely restrict recreational fishing," Professor Johnston said.

She said there had been significant remediation work in the harbour over the past five years to remove a lot of the toxic sediment.

"But we haven't sampled again to see whether or not that's improved the contamination levels in the fish, and we really need to do that," she said.

Professor Johnston was calling on the Government to fund testing – a process that could cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to determine current dioxin levels in both the sediment and fish.

PHOTO: Multi-lingual signs placed around Sydney Harbour warn of the dangers of eating fish caught west of the bridge. (ABC News: Nicole Chettle )
Several anglers the ABC spoke to were not native English speakers and they did not appear to be concerned about the safety of their catch.

"There could be some cultural differences," Dr Hedge said.

"There could be some language differences and this is something the Sydney institute of Marine Science is really interested in pursuing."

Scientists said the pristine-looking waters of Sydney Harbour could be deceptive, and the safest approach was to avoid eating fish caught west of the bridge.

Authorities said the risk to the average consumer was low, but that anyone worried about consuming seafood from the Harbour or Parramatta River should see a doctor.
