Had it a few moths now. Currently standard.I don`t do a lot of serious off roading, but it does go out in the country,I do a lot of wildlife photography and work on a couple of local country estates, so nothing too serious. I had a Hilux 4Runner, great car, but it was getting old and tired. One thing I disliked was the seating position, so started looking at Land Cruisers. Second hand prices over here are bloody extortionate, so this was found nearby. 1999 2.8 Y61. Ticked all the boxes, so I bought it.

Jobs done so far to get it to what I want:

All fluids and filters changed.
General Grabber AT2`s all round.
New brake pads all round.
Wheel arches taken off, silt removed, rust ground away and areas rustproofed.
Underside soaked with waxoyl.

Jobs to do:

Lose the gash spare wheel cover.
Fit the full size roof rack.
Make up some drawers for the rear luggage area.
Not sure about the chrome rear corner protectors, i`m not keen on "bling" so these may go with the wheel cover.

Forgot to add, sorted the sunroof drains out as well, they had come adrift and water was leaking in.

That is the back of the hall, this is the front. Bloke who owns it gives me access to his English and Scottish estate for my photography stuff, about 25,000 acres altogether.

Yeah not a bad shed at all, Were not allowed that mirror tint over here.
Those roof rails are they an OE part for the European models
or an after market accessory in the UK.
Gee feel like I'm looking at Antiques Roadshow, OH yeah start doing some mods hey, LOL
As for the "bling" you can always sell them to help buy something else

Pretty sure the roof bars are standard over here, damned things are useless though, only fastened to the roof with rivnuts.

Got my roofrack on, spare wheel cover is gone, done my swivel hubs and kingpins. Just losing a drop of oil from the rear crank seal, but that can wait until it needs a clutch.

Bloke near us has a garage and is big into patrols, he is sorting a two inch lift out for me.He is trying to talk me into a 3 inch exhaust, not sure about that though.

The film is ok over here as long as it is not on the front side windows or obscures vision, that film is on so people cannot see in too easy, camera gear is damned expensive and I like keeping it out of sight.

Making up a false floor in the back over Christmas so that I can store stuff under there and it will double as a quick bed for the night when i`m out and about.

I look at the stuff you guys can get over there and drool, would love a 4.2 but they are like rocking horse crap over here.

Pretty expensive here to if you can find them. Exhaust will give some free ponies to play with
At least you have access to a hoist and some tools, Yeah you could drools for days on the gear you can get Here.

Fracster, Nice looking Patrol.

Somehow makes it look really different with the fixed roof bars and the wrap around rear bar - maybe a little like an oversized Mitsubishi Pajero...... but in a good way

Done my cheap and cheerful drawers. I don`t need anything like the drawers you guys have over there, we don`t have the terrain or do the mileage over here. Anyway, made these up so they are level with the back seats when they are down, I can kip in there when i`m out and about. I need to get my fridge and battery box strapped down properly, have not decided best way of doing that yet. Because the second battery isonly for the fridge and chargers, I decided to splice ito the auxilliary electrics from the tow bar. This circuit has an inbuilt relay and isolater. Should be ok, if not the Redarc have been very helpful and i`ll probably get some of their stuff.

I think ours have diff locks as standard, they work on a vacum pipe, the switch is opposite the fag lighter.

Pretty sure that the stabilisation switch disconnect the rear ARB, do yours have these as standard?

Bit of an updtae.

Car now has a 2 inch Ironman suspension lift and steering damper.

Just had a clutch and new crank seal fit.

Found out that the flywheel is dual mass. They are £800 should it ever need one. A4.2 engine swap would cost circa £3000, so if it needs a flywheel it will get a 4.2 instead. Been told that I would need a 3.0 gearbox as the 2.8 won`t match.

The car is a long term keeper so that will more than likely happen.

Also been pricing up some rear bars as well, the longer I have the car,the more Patrol fanatics and 4x4 shops I find.

Been a while since I posted in here.

I took the drawers out, looked at all the stuff in them that I have not used and reckoned I didn`t need to be lugging all that weight about. Drawers are gone now.

Had new injecters and glow plugs, pump timed up properly and it is still a bitch to start when the weather is below o centigrade.

Got a cunning pan that will sort my woes out.........I hope, will update later.

Car is currently peeing me off, so much so that I might get out of it and into a 4.2 cruiser instead.

what have you done to it now?

fracster
5th November 2013, 08:42 PM
It takes ages to start when the weather is cold.

So, had new glow plugs, voltage checked at the bar, all ok. Had the injectors tested and sorted.

It overfuels when trying to start, clouds of unburnt diesel out of the exhaust when it finally kicks into life.

Turn ignition, wait for glowplugs light to go out, then airbag light, sometimes give it a bit longer. Looking in the handbook, the glowplugs should stay on longer than they do and perhaps should stay on after it starts?

Think i`ll point Yendor over here see if he can shed any light, perhaps Newby as well.

I also have a sneaking suspicion that the head has a slight crack. So with the price of a new head and gasket kit with head bolts, i`m looking at big money. BUT, I have been offered a good older 2.8 without all the ECU,fly by wire accelerator and the associated eletrical gubbins. OK, I need to fabricate a manual pedal and glowplug set up, but that ain`t too difficult. The engine swap is cheaper than a new head.

When i`m out doing my photography stuff, i can be out all night in minus centigrade weather, when I get back to the car in the morning, I need to have faith that the bugger will start, I have no faith in it doing so.

What I did was source a good Y60 2.8 engine. I found a low mileage well cared for one and the local 4x4 guru fitted it for me.

So, I have no MAF,no ECU, no fly by wire throttle and a lot more tuneable engine. It starts first time and runs very well.

I need to sort a hand throttle out for it, but that is no biggy. I now have the comforts of a Y61 with the simplicity and reliability of the older, no electronic,Y60 engine.

Hope it is ok now.

My back lights stopped working, ours are mounted in the bumper, so I took the units out and found half the farmers field behind them.No wonder the bulbs had gone bang. So I made up and fitted some mud flaps made from car mats, fitted them directly behind the lights and hanging down under the bumper, should stop the same happening again.

Rooting around under there revealed some rust and a leaking diesel tank. Jobs for another day.

The car needs the front rad support replacing and welding. So I went and had a look at other 4x4s rather than spending any more on the old Patrol

Test drove Navaras and a Hilux. After being bounced around like a rag doll in the pick ups, the Patrol is going into the welding shop next week, I no longer have a mig welder.

Comfort wise, the old bus takes a lot of beating and we are limited over here to what is available in similar guises. Range Rovers,Discos and Shoguns are available as well as the Pathfinder and X Trail type things.

The old girl has been spot on since the engine transplant, so worth sinking a few more £`s into it methinks.

Yeah, should be fine for quite some time now bud.

Rear quarters will get done soon, the rest of the chassis is fine, I have some good front wings to go on and the back wings will get done when the rear quarters are done. All the rust on the front abd rear wings is simply down to the plastic wheel arch trims getting full of crap and starting the corrosion problem.

I like the car ,it is a keeper now so will get it all sorted.

Salt is bloody murder mate. Weighed it all up before sorting the bus out, to swap for something as capable would cost £6-£9000. So had to make a decision, opted to sort the old girl out rather than getting something that may need similar work done.

All Patrols over here rust in the same places.

It is schultz mate, spray on. Though I think you can get paint. It is high impact resistant and has rust inhibiter in it. The underside was sprayed with rust converter before the schultz was put on.

I will spray it with waxoyl afterwards as well. Should not need welding again.

I have some of that POR 15 paint, may do the front diff with it, not sure yet mate.

OE Mags?...does that mean the alloy wheels, if so yes, standard 16 inch rims and the side steps were on it when I got it, not sure of origin. Mrs Frac is slightly disabled, so the steps had to stay.

But she looks good now, the Patrol I mean, the wife is cool as well.....
