Check for voltage drop to glow plugs, also it is possible the ink pump is leaking down and needs to crank a few times to gain pressure. this can also be cause by pinholes in fuel lines to the pump.

someone at work mentioned it could be the starter motor $200 a bit pricey for a maybe tho i will check the fuel lines and what are the chances of it being the fuel filter??

If it cranks then the starter motor is doing its job. All it has to do is turn the engine, then its up to the rest of the system to make it start.

Being that is intermittent its more likely electrical. If it was injector or fuel related it would happen at first start up everyday. Check the power getting to your glow plugs it could be a dodgy relay or glow plug timer. If there we pin holes in fuel lines it would also run rough as it would draw air into the fuel system.

During starting if the starter motor is not turning the engine over fast enough this can cause the symptoms you have described.

This can be caused by a tired starter motor, faulty battery or a wiring fault.

Have you been playing in mud holes lately?

As stated above make sure you check the voltage to the glow plugs.
