hey guys my search function seems to be playing up but i just got my winch working however i want to isolate it so i dont have to keep putting the + wire on and off the battery. i was thinking a battery isolator switch but some say something about the earth wire from box. also i want to fuse the positive wire. what fuse should i use. please speak in noob talk as my electrical knowledge not the best

easiest way is an isolator switch on the positive inline either under the bonnet or could be place on top the bullbar neatly all you would see if you mounted underneath is the hole for the key to go in, they are relatively cheap and easy to install, personally i wouldn’t fuse the winch as they pull so many amps last thing you want is to have a fuse that can’t cope when you need your winch the most.

You don't have to isolate the power to the winch motor as that is already controlled through the solenoid pack which OS the control circuit. The Control circuit (switching circuit) is where you install the isolator. Isolate the power to the Solenoid pack (low currant circuit) and your done. Pretty simple really once you have you head around what you are actually trying to do

ok ill leave fuse out now how many amps should the isolator switch be

mate if you saw the state of the wiring of the winch from the previous owner you would freak i have tried to sort it all out. also i have had to wire in wirless remote as the prev owner lost the controller for the winch. i think i may just stick to the isolator switch under bonnet as i think i have a isolator switch out of a mine spec patrol sitting around in my garage

That just makes thing even easier mate. You don't have to open the solenoid pack, it's all open. Figure out which is he positive control wire for your switch and isolate power to it.

And, junk all the crap wiring and just start again mate. Google is your friend and it is really really easy to do. Junk the lot and run wire you can trust

What brand is the winch ? Could always hard wire some controls in the cab with a on/off switch and a in/out
I've got a wire diagram I found online ill see if I can find it again

ok ill leave fuse out now how many amps should the isolator switch be

If you are isolating the supply cable the current draw could be anything up to 500 Amps. If you look up the manuf specs for the winch they should give the stall current. Probably 300 to 400 amps depending on make, model, size.

If you have a snatch block and/or don't just flog the #@$% out of the winch then most of the medium duty brand name Isolators (250 amps and up) like Cole Hersey etc will do the job as they are rated at continuous load and a momentary stall won't hurt them too much if you stop straight away and rerig your pull.

I don't isolate my winch because there are enough terminals etc in the power supply to the winch already and all you have done is introduced 4 more points where high resistance connections can cause issues... supply lead to terminal (1) in terminal to shorting link (2) shorting link to out terminal (3) and terminal to winch lead (4).

not sure it has no markings on it apart from 9500 ewp the solonoid box i have already had open to put in the wirless remote and i noticed another wireless remote receiver in there with twice as many wires as mine with wires everywhere. i dont know how a winch works so i didnt want to remove all this wiring as i didnt want to remove a incorrect wire

also all the wiring was already dont just not connected to battery and the earth. the main earth was insulated in the plastic wrapping (insulator) and fitted perfectly behind a bullbar bolt to chassis and the main power i had to run ip to battery this wiring was fine big enough etc just dodgy wiring inside solonoid box i just want to isolate the winch so it does not drain battery when not in use

will something like this isolator do the job

yes but again i am not sure you need to do that bud

Here are a few pics for you. Do yourself a favour and have a little faith in yourself. Rip out all that Sh1t wiring that you have described! another wireless remote??WTF! If you can figure out how to wire your wireless up then you can figure out how to rip that one out bud! Junk it!

Same goes, if you can figure out how to wire up a wireless remote module then you can install an incab switch and isolator mate, simple

Here are a few pics for you. Google is your friend

This is my solid state solenoid, not sure what you have? either one of these or a box with 4 smaller solenoids in it

Notice the big wires, Thats the Power circuit.

Notice the 3 small wires too, Thats the CONTROL Circuit mate. Isolate the Control Circuit and the winch will not work. It is a Low Current 12v circuit

Here is a Link to a site that has listed a Heap of different wiring diagrams depending on your setup. You WILL find the right wiring diagram there

the old remote seems to have 6 wires mine had 4 so im unsure on the other 2. my winch box has 2 solonoids in it its the same setup as the tuff stuff winches if that helps

Googling, it seems that you may have a couple of indicator LEDs in the system on that winch and the extra wires would be going to those? maybe to indicate operation? I cant see your winch or its brand so my searches are generic.

in this pic it is very straight forward. 1 switches 1a and that is your control circuit isolator. On an ARB switch or Carling switch they are labels 2 & 3 in those positions. 2 switches 3, 7 & 8 are earth, 6 is dash lights FYI
