I've got the old Westinghouse with the faux leather handle grip, you know the one, works so bloody well I have to turn it off for a day every now and then because the defrost element doesn't work and the fan gets frozen and blocked up.

Ripper of a fridge, my boss wanted it gone from the factory and I was all over it. Currently stocked with about 40 home brew longnecks that are used in drinking games where you don't want to waste the good piss, haha

well here's our shed/beer fridge.
It used to belong to my father inlaw, he bought it for his family when my sister inlaw was born.
Apparently was the 1st "Silent Night" refrigerator to be sold in Cootamundra all those years ago,,,,,,, she turned 60 earlier this year!
They just dont make them like this anymore,,,,,

I sure would like a dollar for every beer this old fella has chilled,

in summer we turn him up and the beer has ice particles floating in the neck,,,awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The only thing we have done is replaced the door seal and fitted a new power cord as the old cloth covered lead and Bakelite plug were dangerous!
Other then that "Tommy" has endured 5x house relocations in the last 6x years,,, starts up fresh as a daisy every time!

Hate to think of the power consumption he sucks up though,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Sorry BigFella had to pre date your Awesome looking fridge, looks great too. My three outdoor jobs are from
Shamrock hotel, Bendigo 1854, thats the red cedar one, only use that to lean on like a work bench,
Right hand one I did up, pretty chuffed with the result that holds wine, dont drink wine myself.
Middle one holds tin and dry dog food plus Galah seed for the bird keeps it miceproof.
Top price was $40 but I love these iceboxes, also have plenty of meat safes as well dating from 1860

Silent Night, man that is going back a fair way. Would have been the talk of the street when that arrived at your place.

Old fridges were popular for weekend shacks around here cause they allways worked after being turned off for a while, the modern ones leaked their gas and buggered the trip away!

Like the ice boxes as well, we really do it easy now dont we.

threedogs
19th October 2012, 12:54 PM
Lucas they work quite well they are lined with, either wheat husks, seaweed or cork chips.
Plus wood insuates pretty good too inside early ones its just gal sheet, older ones had enamel inserts
very classy for their time

The BigFella
19th October 2012, 01:44 PM
love the old ice chests, we got one that was Anne's dad's when he passed away but it was too far gone, rotten through to the sheet.
Would love to find one in that good of condition now, hell, might even get me some browny points!
The old meat safes or Coolgardie bags as we knew them (I think) not 100% sure on that.

I cant remember the ice man doing deliveries, I can remember collecting milk from an old Dairy on the edge of town in an old wine flagon.

Not the best nic but this is my baltic pine one late 1890-1900 job.
Brass mesh, this one I've put some perforated sheet on the sides
Brass fly wire very $$$$$$/
, but I like this one. Just picked up an awesome metal one ,even has cups for Kero every corner.
Other pic is mini ice chest.

19th October 2012, 07:17 PM
Coolgardie cooler was hessian as you said and kept damp with water, similar to some station out buildings with brush and water dripping down their sides. these pic are hanging meat safes
notice painted one has cups on top hook and feet ,so you can fill with kero to stop the ants, great thinkers our pioneers. the wooden meat safes have black marks on legs where they stood in tins full of kero.
