hi guys i have a gq duel fuel and want to tour, all the petrols have silly fuel consumption figures mine gets 90l gas = 220-250 ,95l petrol =200. i dont mind the cost but the inconvienience and limited range makes travelling hard (would love to go to broome). Has anyone taken theirs on a long trip and how did it go, and is their anythink i can do to get better range (other than buy a diesel which i may do in the end)???

Not much you can do about the gas, You can fit an Aux or replacement tank, the later being a 150 ltr tank maybe , I did birdsville, 4 corners on dual fuel, just fitted a 75 lt aux tank
which gave me 165 ltrs about 700-800k range, Left the gas tank full in case of emergency, Never looked like running out of fuel

thats some impressive figures is the aux tank a DIY? and any ideas of a rough cost ?

Was fitted to a troop carrier with 3F carby motor very thirsty, price wise tanks are $1000 -$1500 fitted, great mod if you're into big miles.
I've fitted a 75 Aux to my GU $750 odd, as 30lt job was leaking, whats 30lts anyway just a jerry can. now my range is 1200k I would guess maybe more
depending. Love my Aux tank fill up once every month and a bit as GU is daily driver
, not just pulled out for club trips
Not supposed to mention the "T" word SSSHHHHHH

To Broome from where?... Perth?... East?

My first Patrol over here (Perth) was a GQ EFI dual fueler. It was in great nick and sad to see here go in the end but we had little choice than to go to an oil burner because of the lost range.

I had that GQ for about 4 years and put well over 100,000 K's on her touring and camping but the limitations and cost of the LPG just got to much of a pain as we ranged further from Perth and into more remote areas.

The cost of LPG skyrockets once you leave Perth esp if you head North/East and will be over $1.20 to $1.40 a litre in the small towns etc where you can be lucky to get it and head out into the boonies and forget it.

Even if you do find some you get about 300 K's depending on towing and head winds and its gone. FYI as I type this reply LPG is $1.15 a litre in Broome (Deisel $1.70) and approx $1.00 in Geraldton... so a tank of LPG in Gerro would cost me about $90 and run out up near the Overlander but $90 bucks of Deisel (60 litres) will almost get me to Carnarvon

Like threedogs mentions we used to use the LPG almost like a reserve and just run on Petty from the Aux tank and Jerry's. Indeed thats why my custom camper trailer is designed to carry 160 litres of Jerry Cans in any combo of water/fuel plus its 80 litre onboard water tank.

The continual decanting from the Jerry's was just a total PIA so now I have a Deisel with long range main and factory aux and with a few litres on the Camper we have a "no sweat" range of 1,500 K's and never have to worry about where the next fuel stop will be.

Bottom line IMHO is that if you aren't towing then it's a 50/50 call of inconvenience against cost but if you tow then I reckon it's a no brainer and the money on a Deisel is well spent.

I pretty much gave up trying to improve range as other than spending bucks on diff ratios, taking the roof rack off etc and cruising on about 75 to 80 K's it is almost impossible to make any noticeable difference

X 2 with Evil Twin there comes a point wheres it's not worth putting gas in, easy to figure out. how far would you go on $50 of ULP.
Then how for would you travel on $50 of gas, then work out the difference. remember Gas kills cars IMO. If you want or intend doing big miles
it's a NO BRAINER diesel diesel diesel, you can get it anywhere ,even from a tractor out whoop whoop if need be. .IMO

Im getting 400k from 90L od lpg - stock gq 4.2 carby - with 31.5 R15 tyres

How is you truckset up? Are you running 35 tyres?

I would get the truck tunned - you are getting 45 L pre 100 of pertol - ouch. Are you towing?

matfapcz

If you have a TB42 then you get 320km on 10.5inch wide tyres. If you run skinnies(750x16) then you get 420km per 100litres highway drive without towing. If you run 33's , then the millage goes down on your figures, but because of change in ratios you get what I have stated.

The GQ belly-tank only holds 65 ltr usable petrol/diesel.

The roof rack is not on for these figures. I have travelled 300km in duel fuel(carby model) and 100km in diesel in GQs. So your millage depends on what vehicle and what accessories you carry as well as if towing and what weight you have in the wagon.

So have I read that right? You get 47.5 lts per 100ks on petrol?? Wow something is definitely not right there!

yeh il have to do a bit of research my figures are not towing or being in 4wd either ... driving highways with a light to medium right foot in an auto. the car is about to be serviced so il see if that highlights any issues that i might have

If it is 47.5 litres per hundred ks id say its got more than a few issues!. I get between 26-28lts per hundred and that is fairly bad as far as they go.

---I have dual fuel but use petrol only. So my timing is advanced for gas making it use more petrol when run on petrol.
---Its an auto so use a little more there.
---I drive mostly on hilly country roads so use a bit more than highway.
---I have a heavy foot so it uses more than average there.
---When 4wding (usually every weekend) im in a lot of mud and i like to floor it (lol) so suckes it down there
and im still getting just under half of what yours uses!

Hopefully you just need a general tidy up
Id suggest a really good carby tune up by a specialist
Check rotor button for excessive wear
If you havent replaced points in the last 5000ks, do it now
If you havent replaced spark plugs in the last 5000ks, do it now or at least check them
Check the timing
Seriously think of investing in a pertronix electronic ignition kit. To get the Ignitor two (better one) and a new coil to suit is around $230 - $270

heres a few threads on the pertronix kits:

Those high fuel figures are real world. Mate went to the Rock fully laden ,camper in tow full roofrack, driving a V8 100s. pushing into a northerly up the Stuart HWY was getting 50-60 ltrs per 100k.
Had to stop at the first roadhouse to buy extra gerry can. He gets these figures off road low low too. lesson here, Buy a patrol

As MK tank says 400 a tank of gas, thats good, but most would get 350- 450k
My carby 3F 4x4 got 400k easy

I have a dual fuel efi gq, 2" lift 33's and bullbar ect and I get consistently (not including off road or towing) 450km to 90L of gas when you factor the average price of gas at say 70 cents, it costs $63 for a tank so that means its costing me 14 cents per km which is far better than my mate who has TD 42 and gets only 650 to his 95L diesel which costs him about 22 cents per km based on $1.50 per litre diesel prices.

But I agree if towing a lot or going on long journeys diesel is prob better

So so glad I have a diesel even though its the baby 2.8td.
Just done Lismore to cape, cape to lismore towing 1500kg suport trailer n averaged 13.4ltrs per 100km's all up including the tele track
go diesel go.
Chrisandthebeast have you taken your rig for a decent run out of town on a constant run at bout 90k/hr or higher ? maybe worth chucking in new set of plugs n general tune-up as wow I can't believe how thirsty she is especially running 31's as this greatly reduces load on your engine so you should get way better km's per litre than this, maybe you need to mark where the distributor is then advance it a couple degree then take it for a run n see if she gives better economy if not you can always turn it back to where you started. also check your air filters n see if you can see light through them when you hold it up to the sun if not, new ones are the go. worth a try before a big trip.
Cheers Tony

G'Day,

Ok, well mine is the tb42 efi, manual, 5 inch lift and 35's on her, No gas. Runs like a dream and returns about 15-16l / 100km around town (about 500km out of 80L). On the highway i can get down to about 13l / 100 (around the 600km out of 80L mark)

I do have a vacuum gauge to follow and i do have a feather foot aswell which helps. however i do know the 35's dont help but i just leave it in 3rd gear most of the time (on the freeway's too some times) and it sits on about 2900 revs. I found this works best with the stock cam and is the best fuel comsumption.

Cheers Glen.

Mines an auto on 33's and sits on 1800rpm at 100km/h. The bigger the tyres the lower the rpm at any particular speed but takes more torque/power to turn so takes more feul to get going

Mate that's revving out a lot, you'd be better changing to top gear until you wanna accelerate!

most of the time sitting on 100km its in 4th gear or sometimes 5th, however on steep hills i shift back to 3rd sometimes and i watch the vacuum guage go up instead of down with my right foot. (i.e less fuel)

less revs doesn't mean less fuel (well thats what i read in an artical and the guage does sort of confirm it)

Definately not if your labouring the engine. With a manual its all about picking the right gear so that the engine is in the right rev range. Not the same with an auto

But with the amount of fuel yours is using, theres something not right. If you give it all a freshen up you'll find better fuel economy and better power. Did you try any of the things i put in my second post?

My Patrol has 105 Litres Useable Gas and 35 Litres Petrol

Gas 105 divided by 20Litres per 100 K's = 525 K's (BTW i usualy get 18Litres per 100K's)
Petrol 35 divided by 16Litres per 100 K's = 218 K's

A Total of 743 K's. A 20 Litre Gerry Can would give another 125 K's

Not a Great range but it suits me for my use.
Diesel definately the go if you are travelling long distances
