View Full Version : RD28T rebuild problems

So i have just put my rd28t back together in a GQ Patrol, and now it is blowing white smoke :(

I replaced the rings, honed the cylinders, new head, reco injectors, all new gaskets etc, new timing belt kit.

the car started fine, and was leaking at the hose connecting to the injectors to start with, but after re seating them it was fine. I am thinking it is either dodgy injectors (reco ones bought on ebay from QLD) or low compression in the cylinders?

trying a 2nd hand set of injectors i got from the wreckers, but other than that i have no idea what it could be.... any help would be greatly appreciated thanks

All the connections plugged in on the injector pump? double check them, also timing.

Check your pump timing and glow system. White smoke is atomised unburnt diesel. recheck all your valve clearances too.

connections are ok now. timing was double checked. worrie the timing info i have is for a gu 2.8, but they would be the same anyway right?

glow system seems to be ok.

might be the washers not sealing the injectors properly.....

Could be but you would see smoke or fluid being forced out from there. Have you tried supplying power direct to the glow rail to rule out the system. Where abouts are you located?

in newcastle

had the injectors tested, and 3 of them are stuffed. dodgy tips stuck open

2nd hand injectors are on and it is running waaaaay better, still blowing white smoke though... but no leaks any more (crush washers were on upside down, which did not help :P)

so if it was badly overfueling could that be why it is still blowing smoke? until it is cleaned out or something? going to take it for a drive now and see if it clears up....

also could it blow white smoke if the previous owner had fiddled with the injector pump? I bought the car with a blown head, so it was blowing a ton of smoke anyway... how would i check its timing? The timing set by the timing belt is sweet. and car does run smooth now. just blowing some white smoke (engine has only done 20km now)

Yeah white smoke is unburnt diesel. It sounds like it may be timing related you will need specific tools to set it and is probably best left to a specialist. With the right tools the job is quick an easy and shouldnt cost to much getting someone to do it.

thanks. going to ring around tomorrow and get it looked at.

Can also be related to low compression I hear, but hopfully everything else is ok. head gasket was replaced with the same 3 notch one, so that should be at least right

Yeah it can be compression related too. Get a compression test to I find it strange for compression since its just had a rebuild.

Give it a while to let the new rings bed in.
When you fitted the rings, are you sure they are up the right way.?
After honing the bores, did you wash them with soapy water.?
Is the inlet manifold nice and clean?
So much for brand new Ebay injectors lol.
Parts like injectors need to be the best quality, not some busted arz Chinese import.

ah ok, yeah took it for a drive and it is less smokey now. might just be the 2nd hand injectors running in after sitting idle so long (from a wreck)
can it blow white smoke while the rings are bedding in?

yep all parts installed correctly and bores washed etc. manifold had a very good clean.

learnt my lesson with those ebay reco injectors *sigh* what a waste of money

White smoke is cold engine and /or low compression/ poor ignition, once the rings have settled it should improve.
If your valves are too tight, it will smoke as well.
Just drive it normally and don't idle it while the rings are bedding in.
Should clear up after 1000 ks.

Hi mate.
When I rebuilt my engine I also fitted new nozzles. But when I checked them on pressure stand each of 6 had a wrong open moment pressure and needed to have some regulations.
Also when I fit all new parts I refit the injection moment because I changed it a year ago and with normal pressure in cylinders I had white smoke too. So maybe you should recheck your nozzles for pressure test and check the injection moment, may be previous owner also changed it.
