right couple of thing needed or advice to get my patrol back on the road

I only the patrol on Monday of this week I had approx 80 mile drive home and had to top the rad up halfway home with about 3.5 litres of water so rad is leaking took it to a radiator repair compamy where i live and they pressure tested it and said it need a recore quoting £250 + vat sorry no idea what the dollar exchange rate ie so will have to be in uk sterling. i only paid £450 for the truck so dont want to spend over half again on the rad none in the uk seems to do a rad for this model its a 260 series with a 2.8 carb petrol engine its an l28 engine
so my first question is this will a radiator off another truck or patrol fit it and if so would you know anyone that would ship to the uk.

Question 2 speedo was not working i assume the speedo cable has broke again can i source one off something else and is it a mehanical one they is no electric anything in the patrol so i assume its a mechanical one

any help would be greatly appricated

regards

Lee

Mate, 250 Quid sounds a lot for a re-core, should be able to get a new one for that.
Have a look on Ebay.
Speedo cable inner is not expensive, it may even be the plastic gear on the gearbox end.
Best way to check is to pull the inner cable out and see where the problem is.

250 quid may sound a lot for a recore Ferret. But we couldn't buy a patrol like that for $650. Certainly not one we could drive and didn't need a crap load of work done to it.

Mate you've got yourself lot of car for 450 squids.

Don't stroke it, TAP it!!!!.....

well had a little one man band look at the rad this morning bit of a Hilly Billy in his mid 60's i would say he's has capped off 4 fins that were leaking for a whole £25 quid and I already have back at home going to where the truck is which is currently at my mates later this afternoon and will get it refitted also got exhaust sleeve to repair broken exhaust so that just leaves speedo to sort will get a pic up of it as soon as i taken one of it it was like driving a giant armchair when i drove it home on Monday night but i really enjoyed it and I think its the biggest 4x4 I have so far not the biggest engine wise but defo body wise

Once the radiator is done keep the coolant up, these are alloy heads and they run too hot theyll crack
Just check your oil colour and make sure although the radiator could have been the issue that the head/head gasket hasnt stuffed up
Usually water molecules on the dipstick, water in the oil, maybe a rusty spark plug should pinpoint that issue
They are a tuff little engine the L28s , scream their lungs out ,tad thirsty but good robust engine
My L28 sees 6,000 rpm every time i gently drive it
Chuck some pics up and venture in the MQ/MK section

i would have no idea what revs mine is doing as there aint a tacho in it but driving it home on satnav as speedo it never went above 58 mph as it was undriveable due to the misfire 54 was ideal and as soon as temp gauge went up i stopped and filled up rad with water by the time i got it to my mates the gauge was just starting to rise again so I am pretty sure i aint cooked it but will check when we put rad back on today as didnt manage to do it yesterday

cheers

rad back in no leaks and engine is fine

exhaust is next on the hit list

then the speedo and it will be a runner

misfire i think is just a dodgy plug but that can be a work in progress

cheers

Hope it all works out for you
BUT throwing cold water into a hot engine with an alloy head, its a high chance youll crack the head
The old adage that many years ago done by doin this was all good when heads where cast, they could take the abuse, but the alloy heads cant
Get the plugs out and check em ,throw some newies on,get the rad in and keep a close eye on it
Hope its all good and it was a simple stuffed radiator, but the mis doesnt sound to good
