Hi all I have a query regarding changing between high4 and low4 in my GQ auto
I have found there is a nak to engaging and some times I get a grinding sound and in panic turn off the car engage the gear and then start back up
I was doing some hill climbs in the pyreness ranges recently and stopped to engage low4 on a flat and had these issues mentioned here when I got it into low on the flat on the top of a ridge and took off all seemed fine then when I was climbing another track some minutes later it jumped out did the grind sound then engaged again could this be the linkage that needs a nip up or symptoms of a bigger issue?
Any advise would be great cheers pacs

Hey mate
Did it stay in 4 low (green light still on also) or did it drop out of low range gear? Either way, did you still have drive after that grinding sound, or was the truck just rolling on its own accord until you stopped?

Thanks for the reply Bigrig
Not sure about the light I think it was still on cant be sure
I still had drive it seemed like it was attempting to go into neutral like the vibrations knocked it out a little and the grinding then all came good and once on the flat as I pulled up to a stop it gave the large shudder and thud that can be herd as I pull-up

Two things I'm thinking - transfer case linkage (popping out or close to popping out and grinding - hence you still have drive), or a hub slipping out of lock - they make a good racket also.
Not suggesting it is the hub, just not to rule some of the easier fixes out first ...
Good luck with it mate ...

Are you coming to a complete stop then putting it into neutral or park then engaging low4 from high4???
Does not sound like hub to me

That one instance of it coming out of 4L aside...Mine used to do that all the time. Indeed, I think it is fairly common with the GQ auto's. Certainly most of my fellow clubbies that have one seem to get the same issue.
The only way around it was to make sure that when going from 4H to 4L you did it as smoothly and as quickly as possible. Any hesitation in the shift movement on the transfer lever or if you pause in "neutral" and it would grind every time on mine.
Get a nice smooth movement and she'd go into 4L sweet as.

Agree with ET on this, I found when I first bought my Patrol I was a little slow shifting and it would grind, now that I'm use to it and don't muck about I find I don't have the grinding issues

Totally the same for too.
I find that sometimes it helps to move the main lever between park, neutral and drive to help it get into low4.
Also push down (or "in") fairly heavily on the stick when shifting to low4
