hi
i'm about to replace my cylinder head on tb42. i just dont know if i'm supposed to put in some kind of liquid gasket or some other sealant as well on top or under head gasket. or gasket by it self is enough.

Gasket by its self is all you need just make sure it's 100% clean first the head that is

You Probably already know but it also pays to check the head isn't warped. If it hasn't already been done it may need machining.

If the surfaces are not perfect id suggest using a spray on head gasket sealer, most auto shops stock it and the stuff is really good. Its a copper spray product that will take up imperfections in the surfaces.

Make sure both the head and block are perfectly clean. When you set the gasket on the block and you are placing the head on the gasket try to make sure you put the head on in the correct spot as if you have to start sliding the head around on top of the gasket IT WILL DAMAGE IT and then you are going to be back at square 1.

If the head of cylinders is not curved or deformed after overheating or etc you dont need any especial things to install it properly.
If you have any doubt check the lengthwise deformation of head of cylinders and cylinders block and if everything within normal parameters use standart gasket like you had before if curve of head or cylinder block somwhere is out of parameters try to fit thicker gasket (there is 3 types of thick) or change curved part.

+1 for the copper spray

Call me old school, but my opinion (only) is that if you feel the head needs copper spray, liquid gasket, or anything else on the market over and above a genuine gasket, then it simply ain't right and should be machined. They were designed to only have the need for the gasket, and unless you've installed a spacer to decrease compression etc, then it should be absolutely flush and only need the one gasket ...

My two cents ...

X2 with big rig. Clean, dry surfaces make the head gaskets job a lot easier and also a nice flat one as well. Being a Diesel fitter by trade I have done my fair share of head removals and refits and have never used a drop of sealer or spray on substance.
