View Full Version : Where to mount a garmin 3.5" GPS on GU IV ?

I have a 05 GU IV and want to mount my Garmin 3.5" GPS somewhere semi permanently - you know the kind that gets stuck on your windscreen with a suction mount? In other cars, I just doubleside velcro it to the dash.
There is a door flap above the stereo, which would be a great place to put it (and hide it behind the door when parked up or not in use), but the gps is 10mm taller than the hole.
I am considering cutting into the box section, maybe cut into the top part of the box ceiling, but not sure if it is empty space uo there, or I will be wasting my time.
Anyone here done something like this? can you offer any alternatives?
thanks

Asixa pop over to intro section first so people will know a bit about you your ride and vice versa, its something the forum asks of all newbies.
Then you can post your question, you'll get a better response as well

Not sure on your model but most are removing the single din radio and coin tray and fitting a double din unit that does the lot' affordable around the $350 plus mark. mine even has TV,GPS,DVD,Mp3,iPOD,CD,USB,SD card and I'm sure I've forgotten one. The GPS software is the same as VMS.

That's a good idea. Mine has a double din CD/Cassette, which I will happily give up. What model deckl do you have and was yours $350?
and I'm sure I've forgotten one.
Bluetooth for phones?

The Factory GPS goes into the slot on a GUIV where that lift up door is in lieu of that compartment.
When i did my be trip i had a 7" GPS with a couple o velcro buttons on the bottom sitting into the slot in the bottom where you would put your pens. It lent agains that flip up door and worked a treat.
When the going got real tough though (Real Tough) it got thrown around a little and i had to use duct tape to hole the top in position but that was pretty extreme!
For the most part is sat there with a couple of dots on the bottom no trouble. Maybe a couple of buttons on the back too to stick to the front of the lift door.
Great spot for the GPS.

nice idea ;-)
not sure if the angle of view is anygood, but that sunglass holder is useless (for sunglasses at least, probably fine for reading glasses).. and the GPS fits nicely in there.
I am sure I can grab power from the cabin lights up there. hmm. I wonder. Might drive around for a few days with it temporarily there to see if it works for me.

If not, just tap in double din dvd/cd on Ebay and you see heaps at varying prices.
X 2 Cant fit sunnies up there, might be good spot for reverse camera as well?

well, the sunglasses holder seemed like a good idea parked in the garage, but on the road, its not a good idea - the angle of view is just a bit distracting (its only just above the rear view mirror, but enough to be unnatural).
I pulled some of the dash apart to take a look at that flip up door console, but couldnt completely remove the compartment. I might have a go at a hack job to get it in there and route the wiring inside the dash. If that idea doesnt still seem good by Sunday, then I will look at a combo dvd/gps/thingo. Thing is, I really like the simplicity of the factory radio, and I can read the display.

thanhks for the tip. I have now installed a double din stereo with GPS and Reverse Camera - well worth the effort and much better integrated.

Here it is. I mounted the revers camera on the small barn door at the top right hand corner above the numberplate frame
EDIT: I cant seem to get the pic to embed, so here is a link;

Well, what a piece of GARBAGE my double DIN Do Everything unit was. It looked great on paper with Reverse camera, DVD, Radio, Navigation, Bluetooth, touchscreen, but it didnt do anything well. I think I got a lemon. bad luck eh? Decided to pull it out rather than driving myself crazy and replace it with a namebrand unit with a few less functions, but at least it should work well. (I also hate not having a rotary volume control, so glad to get that back).
I will put the new unit in tomorrow.
Back to my orginal thought of where the mount the Garmin ;-)

what was the unit you bought that went kaput? quite a lot of the guys are getting the eonon units and yet to hear a bad thing from these
I have mounted the Ipad in my GU if you wanted to have a gander at my build thread

it was an eonon, g2227.
Not so much that it went kaput, more that the build quality was low. Sure it was fun, exciting, did a lot of tricks and great to look at, but I just couldnt imagine a long term relationship - hmm, reminds my of a girlfriend ;-)
I also found it frustrating with the touch panel, and its not so good multi-tasking. just took too much time and thinking to switch between say Navigation and Radio (which was static-y), to end up listing to the TV that didnt work.

Was it from the actual eonon seller on eBay or elsewhere? There are a few copies on there and the staff from eonon are very good to deal with, might pay to drop them a line with any issues
