View Full Version : Tallarook took my clutch

Saturday I went up to Tallarook for the day and started well but down cable track while avoiding a simple person who decided to stand where he should not I ended crossed up in a deep pool of freezing water and as the exhaust was not under water I made the mistake of turning the car off and what seems to have happened is the clutch has gone from hot to very cold very quickly and given up.
It took 3 hours to get me out and down to the main road to wait for the tow truck.
So now it's a crash course on clutches and right now she has an engine crane through the drivers door holding the gearbox up...
Will get a clutch tomorrow and finish off the job as I need it day to day for work and so on..
Besides that it was a lovely day!!!!!!!

Nice looking rig, pretty much exactly what i want mine to look like, sucks about the clutch though but i guess that's just 4wding!

Yeah an expensive part of it, thats why I am doing it myself as cash is tight at the moment.

I need some advice from someone who has done a clutch and that is how important is it to get the fly wheel machined... I was told it was not that much of a problem if it looks to be in good condition but everything I have read states otherwise???
Spring has sprung and I have so much work on and need this sorted quick!!!!!!

G'day Bloody Aussie.
there is no chance that the throw out bearing or clutch is stuck on the splines because of the mud and water? there was a post on here a couple of weeks ago on possible cures for excess mud in the guts of a clutch - I think it was to remove the inspection cover, and stick the garden hose no22le up there to hopefully flush enough crud out to get it working?
I have a tip which you may know. I suggest you get two long bolts that suit the bell housing thread. cut the heads off. Cut a slot for a st raight blade screwdriver in the cut end, or grind a couple of flats so you can latch onto the bolts with vice grips or pliers. How long? Long enough so that they engage the holes in the box, while still letting you see a bit up into the housing etc.
Temporarily install these in the bell housing, one each side. They will help you guide the box up to the bell housing. They don't need to be graded bolts - I think I got mine from the hardware shop.
One thing about the clutch is that it takes so long to get the thing in and out. With that in mind, people tend to do every single thing, or as much as they can afford, to try and get it right the first time.
I am no expert on clutches and fly wheels, but the list might include:
-Gear box input shaft seal, because it will be disturbed as you jiggle things about reinstalling same - if the rubber is at all old and stiff it won't respond well to this.
-Spigot bearing in fly wheel.
-Throwout bearing.
-Close inspection of yoke and pivot pin for wear.
-Dunno about engine rear main oil seals.
Machining the fly wheel - someone who knows more will give you some guidance here, as to what is a pass or fail. I reckon if you like to play in mud, it won't be healthy, and I'd have it machined - or at least take it to someone who knows for them to have a look.

I got a phone call today about that trick with the pressure washer but by then most of it was apart and I had been complaining for a while about my clutch as I tow a heavy trailer almost everyday, so this has forced my hand.
Picked up the clutch from Campbellfield today and grabbed all diff and tran/gearbox breathers while I am at it.
Trying to do this while working and picking kids up and so on..... to make it worse... pause.. wait for it........... I am driving a Pajero!!! the very Pajero I pulled out of a water hole 2 weeks ago and befriended the driver.
Turns out he is a Senior Sargeant with Crash investigation unit and was a Tog for years, before that he was a mechanic.
I have not yet seen what is inside of the bell housing so not sure what to expect as I will have to pull out the flywheel as well.
I was a motorcycle mechanic for 14 years but these are a completely different animal.... wish me luck!!!

Let me know if you need to borrow a gearbox trolley jack and a multi fit input dummy shaft . just sittin in the shed if you need it and not too far from you . could probably give you a hand friday arvo if needed mate . let us know .

To quote a mate of mine 'A second class ride beats a first class walk, any day!'.
Everything has its faults and good points, and if I could find the small font to type this, I might. I've spent some highway time in new Pajs including a diesel. Very impressive. Off road? I saw a well driven older Paj drive out of a creek at 'cruiser park that defeated a few other rigs that on the surface appeared more capable. Old Paj may have had a couple of inches in the suspension, and or a locker, but it came down to driver skill too.
Good luck and have fun - the bits might be a bit heavier than the average bike. Note, Bike, not bike gearbox :-) Just kidding. Mostly.

Hey mate its certainly worth doing the flywheel when doing the clutch. It gives it a nice flat surface to mate against and the way its machined helps the clutch to work better. Sometimes if its not done you will get some form of clutch shudder due to the friction plate no being able to grip on the flywheel.
I would also highly recommend doing the rear main while you have the box and flywheel out. This is a general rule of thumb when doing clutches as we all know about murphys law. If you do the clutch and not the seal a week later the seal will leak.
A good alignment tool is a must otherwise it can be very difficult to refit the gear box.
I had a similir thing happen to a clutch once due to the rubber boot on the actuator fork being split. Muddy/sandy mixed water entered the clutch area and filled the gap between the fingers and the pressure plate basically leaving my clutch disengaged all the time. I wouldnt be surprised if this is whats happened to you.

Bell housing is hitting the body and cant go back any further????
Only 3inch gap so far but stops dead against body, any ideas???

X2 With Newby, same thing happened to a LUX at the VIC Cruiserkhana.
Clutch filled up with mud, pumped the pedal with a fire hose squirting water, eventually come good.
Ditto with Boots only round the corner if you need a hand.

You should be able to drop the gearbox down a little so you can move it back more now. Been a while since I have done a troll clutch but thats how it went by memory.

Yeah you need to let the engine nearly sit on your tie rod then you will have to twist the gearbox so the starter section is rotating towards the ground. It is a fiddly part of the job on my GQ i got a little bit excited with a hammer around the area :)

Carefully jack the front of the motor up, this will then cause the gearbox to tilt down in the rear which should allow the gearbox to come out. Just make sure you have the gearbox nicely secured as when it comes off it could come away in a hurry. They weigh about 200kgs so you dont want it to drop on you or the floor, are you using a hoist at all or working off the ground?

Well the boys are coming around tonight to help me as it is too hard to man handle this thing on my own and adjust the height of the crane and jacks!!!
Going to have to find some decent lighting and I dont think the guys are going to like the fact I did not get to clean the car and the amount of dirt that has gotten in my eyes ears mouth!!!!????
Looking at buying my mates s$itbox triton diesel ute for a run around so my baby can get treated with the respect she deserves .

Safety Glasses. Everyone gets Safety Glasses. I carry a couple of pair in the glove box if i need to get under the GQ in the bush. When working under it i always have them on, so much stuff can drop off while your working on stuff under there.

Well the boys are coming around tonight to help me as it is too hard to man handle this thing on my own and adjust the height of the crane and jacks!!!
Going to have to find some decent lighting and I dont think the guys are going to like the fact I did not get to clean the car and the amount of dirt that has gotten in my eyes ears mouth!!!!????
Looking at buying my mates s$itbox triton diesel ute for a run around so my baby can get treated with the respect she deserves .

Finally got the gearbox out... fffaaaaarrrrrkkkkk!!!!!!!!!
Boots just rang me and is heading over with the jack and my mates coming later.
Then tomorrow drop the flywheel off to get machined.
I dread getting this all back in.

the good news is that your sore aching muscles will feel better tomorrow, than they will the next day............ (is that good news? Yeah, might all be back together by then).
Looks like a clutch that has been working in challenging conditions. Not an expert, but looks like it was a prime candidate for remove and replace rather than some quick fix?

Well 2 days of crap.. sick kids heaps of work and a wall I clipped at a job yesterday came down and now up for $500 in insurance excess... blah!!
So tomorrow I want this done so my mates are headed over again to finish it.
Question about rear main... do I have to remove the sump???
I have been taking lots of pics and will do a proper DIY when finished and have more than 5 min to spare.
