As i was going for a family vacation to the western side of Fiji, and after traveling about 25mins of Highway the engine gave up. maybe wrong tune??....before that i noticed the egt and it didnt go past 550....then on a long stretch of road i floored my right foot in 5th gear boost didnt go past 13psi.....then after say 20 secs the rpm dropped, the lights came on i could hear some tick tick tick noise....i pulled over. started again and the engine was shaking...blowing white smoke. i managed to drive it back home slowly...the turbo would pull but temperature was rising at times. i reached home, oil was leaking i think oil came up from the oil cap on rocker cover, and radiator had bit pressure. the engine was shaking / missing. no water was in the oil.... the mechanic opened it up and said that no pistons / rods were damaged. one piston had made some mark on the sleeve , no.4 piston i guess and had a slight crack near the rings. he said i will need one piston sleeve and advised to replace new rings, bearings inside. What may have gone wrong?? the motor was NA before and did around 290,000kms (TD42) since i recently added the turbo kit....Should i reduce the boost / fuel??

Could be many things mate, replacing rings could be a fix as suggested.

See below as well...

What type of turbo have you put on it?

Have you got a snorkel on it, was it raining?

No water in airbox or filter?

White smoke occurs when raw diesel comes through the exhaust completely intact and unburned. Some causes of this include…
Faulty or damaged injectors
Incorrect injection timing (could be a worn timing gear or damaged crankshaft keyway).
Low cylinder compression (eg caused by leaking or broken valves, piston ring sticking, cylinder and/or ring wear, or cylinder glaze)
When white smoke occurs at cold start, and then disappears as the engine warms up, the most common causes are fouling deposits around piston rings and/or cylinder glazing. Use of our Flushing Oil Concentrate and FTC Decarbonizer address these respective problems.

Water entering combustion spaces will also create white smoke. Faulty head gaskets and cracked cylinder heads or blocks are a common cause of water entry, and are often to blame. Unfortunately, expensive mechanical repair is the only proper solution here.

yes i have snorkel...wasnt raining. the oil came up from the cap on rocker cover. head gasket not blown.....turbo is a T3/T4 on safari kit. was abt 13psi boost kept on full throttle abt 20secs....will extra fuel / boost likely to cause this as well??

Did you put it on a dyno after putting the turbo on it?

No dyno in Fiji.....thats a issue. adjusted fuel screw...turned up the boost. there was no excess black smoke. but slight white smoke during only start up even before the turbo was on. not while driving, only when first start.
