I'm going to look at a second hand warn XD9000 winch today. Apparently it's in good condition and was working fine when taken off the vehicle recently. (they sold the vehicle). Just wondering if theres anything in particular I should be looking for? Like solenoid terminals, signs of water etc.

Take the end cap off the motor, that should give you an idea of what the rest will look like.
throw 12v across it to confirm it is working. Does it have cable or rope???

Mate,

As it's got cable see if there is any way you can unspool the cable and check for kinks, breaks, fraying etc.

X2 with above try to find a kink or frayed bit on cable, you'll probably run rope anyway.

tell him you'll need to replace cable. Might get price down. I brought 2nd hand Warn XP 9.5 for $500, in brand new condition

Rope is only $200 for 40 mtrs x 10mm

Thanks for the advice guys. Picked it up at lunch. It turns out I knew the guy selling it so I could take his word on the use its had etc. Cable looks straight, came with all papers (warranty, manual etc), fairlead, all brackets, spare hook, a bit weathered but generally decent condition. $500. That's pretty good isn't it?
