I bought Little Red for the princely sum of $1300.00 purely to enter the Cape York Misers Challenge and had intended to sell it as soon as we got back.
Its not very powerful, has no room to rest your feet and is VERY uncomfortable to drive any distance... but its now Red

I bought it, repainted it, got it registered and on the road for the grand total of $2301.00

Then because it had gone so well I took it to the most Easterly point of mainland Australia at Cape Byron and continued down to the the most Southerly point of mainland Australia at South Point on Wilsons Promontory also visiting the highest point of mainland Australia at Mt Koskiousko as well as Victoria's and New South Wales's highest waterfalls.

So ... on with the build up story

This is what i saw in the headlights on the way to a camping weekend and bought it over the phone ... no idea what its like but thats part of the adventure

Its my contender for the Cape York Misers Challenge trip.
apparently its done 412,000 Kms, needs a windscreen and a couple of tyres for a roadworthy ... and most importantly ... it goes

will add more when i get it home and actually touch it and find out if my 1300 bucks has been wasted

Of course i won't be driving it until I paint it Red

As you saw, I needed a LH flare and they're a bit expensive so i bought one on Ebay for 100 bucks ...

came with a few extra bits thrown in LOL

just about everything in the whole trailer load was painted chassis black ... including the grill, bonnet, guards etc ...

there was a badge on the grill so i hit it with some graffiti remover and this is what i found ...

I spotted a bit of rust in the lower corner of the windscreen and since the windscreen needed to be replaced anyway ... I ripped the windscreen out to treat and fix the rust.
of course it started to rain so i had to chuck my tarp over it but its a bit low for working on ...

Got sick of the tarp hitting me and there was not enough room to paint the roof so i did what any self respecting bogan would do ...

built myself a shed

tarp was very tatty so i had to roll the edge and screw it to the guttering , whack a few eyebolts in the fence and use half a roll of 100 mile an hour tape to block up all the holes

All this rain doesn't help with the lake on the ground though
http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2012/08/153.jpg

its now in undercoat but thats as far as i could get.
painted the windscreen recess then got the hoodlining glued back in to the edge at the top.
will paint it when the weather clears but not being a painter i hear its not good to paint in high humidity?
gunna be humid for a while i think

Rubbed the rust back on the wheels and cut the bumper to clear the flares and recovery point before painting them and refitting them.

did a few things on it today ..

Repaired the bitch light and mounted it back on then ran the wiring into the engine bay.
Replaced the number plate light and moved everything up higher ...
LED's only work when wired one way as i found out after i removed it again
Mounted a couple of switches for lights after moving the turbo timer.
Dismantled the steering wheel and repaired the horn button assembly
Fixed the seatbelt.
Greased up everything and checked the spring bushes for wear ... seems OK but it still has the wobbles

replaced the sway bar bushes for the roadworthy
Yep ... she's now registered

Decided it needed a shakedown run to see if it will make it to Cape York so i took it down to Menindee :D

Reckon its got enough grunt for towing duties ...

Gave the side a bit of a polish coming down into the Wenlock river

my exhaust hanger bolt had been ripped off coming down into the Wenlock so i did a klunker repair job on it ...

I bent the two rear mudguards but had no mechanical problems at all and made it back home no worries.

But first i thought i had better replace the worn out brake drums.
i must have gotten used to it while away but now that i'm driving the work van around it shows up how bad the brakes are on Little Red.

I have also cut the corners under the tray and fitted LED lights.

With the upcoming trip looming i was not looking forward to driving another few thousand K's on the bumpstops ...

with the rear springs sagged more than the front it was sitting down at the back even before putting any load in it

the smart thing to do wold be to fit a new set of springs all round 8-)

but if i need new springs i would get a lifted set so i would need new shocks as well ... worth more than the ute

so i fitted a set of extended shackles and new bushes instead

With a week off over xmas i headed south to the most Easterly point in Australia at Cape Byron ...
http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2012/08/110.jpg

On the way South I stopped in at the highest waterfall in NSW, Wollomombi Falls.

The mighty MK had its first ever breakdown when I lost most of my accelerator pedal travel ...
felt like a broken throttle cable but it just fell out of its bracket... a 1 minute fix :D
http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2012/08/174.jpg

I finally made it down to Tidal River and made camp not far from the beach.
This is as far south as you can drive on mainland Australia.
http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2012/08/112.jpg

On the way North again I stopped in at the highest falls in Victoria, Agnes Falls.

I then headed up into the High Country via Billy Goat Bluff Track ...
http://img94.imageshack.us/img94/8036/5sdg1740s.jpg

Charlottes Pass where i had a bit of trouble finding room to park in amongst all the other tourists
http://img842.imageshack.us/img842/6344/5sdg1781s.jpg

It may be a bit ambitious but i will try and drive Little Red to Australia's most Westerly point at Steep Point.

To go the distance i thought i had better do a bit of work to the old girl.

First up was a new set of steel wheels and new tyres ...

http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2012/08/179.jpg

Then smashed it with a mash hammer 8) that moved it enough to get things started ...
http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2012/08/180.jpg

I then used another bolt to hold the new sleeve in place while I hammered it into the place ...

I decided to fit the fuel fillers from a GU Ute to the klunker as they have the screw in caps and the rear filler has the extra port to run the transfer pump hose to ... problem is the GQ tank filler port is 1 1/2" the filler necks are 1 3/4" and the MK tank filler port is 2"

I used the GU main tank rubber which has an expanded section to fit the Aux tank.
I used the stock Mk rubber on the rear tank but welded a steel section on to the filler neck.
A lot of stuffing around but should be a bit better.
I used an Electric Fuel Pump to transfer fuel from the aux tank to the main tank.

Only problem is the Auxillary tank takes more fuel than the Main tank so i have to watch i don't over fill it when transferring the fuel over

Decided to tackle the non starting issue and couldn't be bothered trying to trace through all the ignition crap to find the problem so i fitted a momentary switch to the dash and ran a wire direct to the starter solenoid ,,,

When i was ready to test i noticed that the wire feeding the solenoid was zip tied to the cable and went to a spotlight relay ???

checked the power to the relay and found a blown fuse so it works again ... and so does my direct method

next problem is to get the radio to work ......

bought a new radio, same brand, same plug and fitted it .... you guessed it ... wires to the plug are different so i had to rewire it then fired it up ... no worky

trace through the wiring and found the permanent supply wire came from the clock and had a crimp splice connector on it so as soon as you put a load on it the voltage dropped down to 7 volts ...

cut the wire and fitted spade terminals and it works now.

Big Red
26th August 2012, 04:43 PM
well after a test drive last night ... the radio rattles

so i pulled the dash apart again and refitted the original "wireless" which of course now works

which meant rewireing the plug section of the wireless to suit the new wiring ... at least they are now interchangeable

can't test drive to check for rattles until the silicon dries, hopefully that will hold it steadier and stop the rattle.

dragged out the multi meter but the battery is missing so its a bit hard to test things out
even the pirhana volt gauge was showing 17 volts when it was really about 11.

had to drive home from Caboolture with no lights, blinkers etc ... ok when all the traffic is going the same way on the freeways but when i turned off at Ormeau i would have two way traffic so fitted a set of rechargeable LED headlights to get me home

Little Red performed great over the 12500 Km trip over everything thrown at it ...
fuel varied between 13L/100Km on the highway to 22L/100Km on the soft dirt of the Strzelecki.

I broke a Headlight and Mirror
Broke a weld on the mudguard bracket and headboard
pulled a swaybar bush through the swaybar eye
got 1 puncture

thats it !!

Its now been to the North, South, East, West, Centre, Highest and Lowest points of mainland Australia in less than 12 months ...

Pretty damn good for a $1300.00 Klunker

Mr Green,

Mate I'm impressed, that is one hell of a truck and one hell of a read.

The only thing now, what's next on your trekking agenda.

Keep us posted

Got another GU ute that i'm turning into a touring machine so trips will be done in that now, will be selling the MK and the GQ to fund the repairs and mods to the two GU's

next plan is to get my GU Ute comp truck back on the road so i can do the Canning in it next year while i set up the GU Ute Super Tourer for future trips

Mate, truly outstanding effort. As per the "Keeping it in the Family" thread in members rides, I'm doing this for my eldest lad at the moment - $1500 buy price, $810 spent so far on necessities, and it has a solid engine, transmission, transfer and chassis with 99% of rust in the cabin - even the seats and dash cluster are in good nick.

Obviously would welcome any pitfalls you could guide me on to avoid, and absolutely impressed at your effort and outcome!! You should be proud as punch for that job!!

Mine goes like a dream ... best thing i did was fit 33's as they suit the gearing much better and cut the exhaust off before the muffler which increased the torque and lowered the point where the power starts to come in.

Interesting one - his is a TB42 so will affect the gearing (H260's also), but not sure what the effect will be on the effect on the engine ..

Thanks mate
