View Full Version : Guzzle Guts

Bloggsy
26th October 2010, 02:20 PM
There is a bit on Guzzle Guts in my intro, but here's a bit more detail.
Bought new in 2003. It's a 4.8 Petrol Auto (tiptronic). Only mods/accessories at the time I took owership were Safari snorkel, Piranha Dual Battery System, Tinting, Nissan Steel Winch Bar, IPF spots and tow bar.
It has been through a few changes over the years in regards to suspension, tyres and other add ons. The motor has been untouched apart from the PVA mod discussed on Patrol4x4.com.

Additional stuff on it today:
Dobinson 75mm rear springs (with 30mm coil spacers) and Polyair bags.
Dobsinson 75mm front springs.
Koni 88 series shocks to suit.
Dobinsons adjustable panhards front and back.
Dobinsons HD steering dampener.
Procomp black steelies x 6
285/75/16 BFG KM2 Mud Terrains x 6
Opposite Lock Dual Wheel Carrier.
3 x Commercial Rola Bars with full size alloy tray.
ARB Awning.
Rear Worklight.
Electronic Rust Protection.
Front ARB Airlocker with small ARB air compressor.
Outback Accessories 145L Fuel tank.
Tigerz11 12,000lb winch with rope.
Dept Int. Outback drawers with cargo barrier and divider/shelf.
Platinum Drop Down Fridge slide with 50L Waceo fridge/freezer.
55L Outback Water tank.
ARB Air Compressor with outlet to back of drawers.
Uniden UHF with GME AE4076 antenna.
RFI Nextg/GSM Phone antenna.
Front MSA Products canvas seat covers.
DIY rear door drop down table.
Under body rock lights.
LED interior lighting.
Dual Battery Monitor.
2 x Narva 21W reverse lights (LED fitted).
Extended Rear Diff Breather.
XLR8 SS1 Rock Sliders/Steps
Additional 12v power outlets
Rear Anderson plug for camper trailer battery charging.
Front Recovery Plates.
Rear Recovery Point
Reversing Cameras
Truckload of recovery gear etc...

On the horizon...the very, very far away horizon:
Reduction Gears, Header and Exhaust system, HID the IPF's, maybe a set of play 35's, water temp and auto trans gauges, bash
plates, new hawse fairlead (old one is pitted), LED worklight, change over exterior lamps to LEDs, underbody water tank, caster correction kit (??), chip it possibly.

Some pics:

can see you have put a lot of thought into the set up before doing the work and splashing out on the goods to make the fitout complete. I like how everthing looks easily accessable, and kept cool with the insulation. I especailly like the reverse lamp.

Thanks for the kind words fellas. I wouldn't call it immaculate though as it has its fair share of bush pinstriping and the odd dent here and there.

There's more pics and some videos here for those that want to take a look http://s266.photobucket.com/home/Bloggsy69/allalbums

Hi Billy, If you are talking about "Uniden UHF with GME AE4076 antenna", we refer to them as a UHF, but they are still CB radios, just on a different frequency to AM CB or VHF. Have a look here http://www.exploroz.com/Vehicle/Accessories/UHFRadio.aspx this should explain all.

Yeah the stand isn't too bad for the price (~$150 ebay) but tends to wobble around a bit so you need another securing point near the top of the arm/tray, a bit like the RAM Mount ones. In that pic there is a ratchet strap securing it to the passenger seat. I tried a few other options which seemed to work ok too, a velcro strip on the back of the tray and then attach that to another piece of velcro stuck just above the radio head on the dash. Also the same thing over the second glove box in front of the passenger if I just wanted to use the laptop in the car for other things when stopped. Does make it a little difficult to access the radio controls, stubby lever etc...

I'm now just using the Hema Navigator 5 and TomTom in it's place, less clutter. The TomTom will be replaced by an Iphone4 soon running either TomTom, IGO8 or Navigon. The Route66 Street Nav on the Hema is still cr@p.

Can you give us a description (and photos if possible) of the PVA engine mod please, I think a few other 4.8 owners would be interested to read about it.

Hi Tony,

Cheers mate.

I don't have any pics and I'm not exactly what you would call mechanically minded, but it was the work of Jay on the other national patrol forum along with his cruise control mod. I think basically this power valve actuator starves the engine of air up until about 1/4 throttle position. Disconnecting the actuator rod and cable tying the valve open and disconnecting the solenoid is all that needs doing. This seems to give you more power and torque off idle, some people even experiencing better fuel economy (not in my case though, economy is still the same).

Without trying to draw people away from this forum, I can post a link to the thread on the other forum, where there's a full description and pics of the 2 mods? Let me know.

Cheers,
Darren

It's been a while since the last update, so here goes. Not in any particular order.
I had been meaning to get the 2 degree castor correction done for some time now and finally I've had it done. The Patrol now drives much better with the steering wheel returning to centre without much effort and it doesn't bounce off in all directions as previously when you hit any bumps in the road. At the same time the arms were off I had some 12mm Superior Engineering radius arm spacers fitted. This should allow me to run some play 35" tyres if I need to in the future without scrubbing the backend of the front guards and mudflaps. I have a set of rims which I bought secondhand a while back for this purpose, but still need to paint/powdercoat them in readiness for the bigger rubber. Thanks to Ash and Stu at Perth 4x4 for fitting the above items.

Had enough of replacing globes in the bullbar combo lights, even the LED globes I bought started to play up with all the mud etc... getting into the hounsing. So i bit the bullet and replaced them with a set of LED park/indicator lamps from Russ@Tweaked Offroad. Model no. is 175AW.

New Head Unit from AutoTunez (Ebay). The clock has a mind of its own, but the rest seems to be functioning ok. Has all the usual stuff you'd expect GPS, Ipod connectivity, Bluetooth, DVD, reverse camera etc.., plus I've loaded up OziCE with a selection of maps. Was quite happy that it came with IGO8 Street Nav and not that gawd damn Route66.

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii252/Bloggsy69/The%20Patrol/stereo1.jpg

The front swaybar links were a bit short, so I decided to get some greasable adjustable swaybar links.

The ROLA roof bars and tray were sold, as after our Kimberely trip I found that I was not really using it. So those have now taken up resdience on top of another WPC Patrol. I decided that 3 Rhino Sportz racks would do me nicely. These hold the awning, shovel holder and ratchet tiedowns etc...

I had been eyeing off these Harris Hardcase diff guards for a while and after seeing some of the punishment they'd taken on other peoples Patrols, I decided to grab one for Guzzle Guts. I did have one small issue though with the U-Bolt on the driver's side coming into contact with the brakeline. Robsons Brother's 4WD were kind enough to relocate the brakeline for me, so now the HH diff guard is now installed. Thanks Mal.

I had Mike (XLR8) weld on a couple of extra bullbar tabs for me and he also fabbed up a hi-lift jack holder so that the hi-lift sits on the inside of one of the wheel carriers. Thanks Mike.

Hi-lift jack holder (minus the jack)

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii252/Bloggsy69/The%20Patrol/HiLift_Jack_Holder.jpg

The air locker and compressor switches were installed in the pen holder in the centre floor console, but I found that they kept popping out. The reason for this was that the wiring was hard up against the carpet underneath the console. Not good considering how hot the switches get.

I found these in Clark rubber and used them to raise the switches up enough to get clearance for the wiring underneath.

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii252/Bloggsy69/The%20Patrol/Rasied_Locker_Comp_Switch_Mount.jpg

Cut out the centres so that the switches clicked in and with a bit of Rapid Fix, adhered them to the centre floor console.

Some of the bits from the Suspension Stuff Flexi kit. Coils, coil rubbers, ext. rear bumpstops, f + R shocks etc... Rear tail-shaft has also been flipped 180 degs so that it doesn't hit on the crossmember on full droop. Brake bias bracket was also installed.

Added a second UHF antenna to the back so I can run a 6 or 9db depending on terrain. This frees up the bullbar antenna to run the 4.5 DB stick. The front and rear antennas are connected to the switch box mounted on the overhead console so I can switch between the two on the fly. Not the neatest looking place to install the switch box but I was limited by the cable length, but it serves the purpose.

Updated the maps for IGO8 also installed IGO Primo2 to try it out (like it so far). Also managed to get hold of a customisable menu system for the navigation screen. Navi menu now has icons for each program. The menu fires up straight away, so there is no need to navigate through the file manager when swapping between on and of road navigation.
