In and out of gear, well hopefully

Just bought a bit of a banger.

Any way, I find that I have a lot of free travel with the clutch pedal, and now more often than not; I get no response from the clutch and cannot select any gear (apart from thunking it into reverse). Not very good for around town travel, stuck at, in and through traffic lights.

Right any advise (constructive please) would be appreciated
