View Full Version : Keeping it in the family ...

Bigrig
14th August 2012, 12:30 AM
So as some of you may know, the eldest lad has been looking around for a project car whilst he gets his license - something solid (but cheap) that he could build up over time and end up with a reliable daily driver.

He's been wanting a Patrol, but not much has popped up in the price range that could compete with rusty old Navara's, hilux's, etc .... until Saturday!!

He picked up an 89 GQ TB42 ute with a fair bit of rust through the cab, but a clean as a whistle chassis, a motor that absolutely purrs, and a driveline and transmission that most of us would be stoked to have in our daily bangers.

Keeping it in the family indeed!!! Couldn't be happier for him, and he's over the moon with his "first car".

Sooooo ... to work we went ...

This is what it looked like on Sunday ...

18951

18952

And after 24 hours, this is what it looks like now ...

18953

18954

18955

18956

The young fella is mortified!!! lmao ... nahhh ... he knows it needs to be stripped back to see what we're dealing with (rust!! lol) and you don't find gold unless you dig ...

So here's hoping to a good build process for the young fella (even with me involved!! lol) and the intent is for this to be a ute that will not fail in turning heads. Plan is to have it stripped, rebuilt, customised here and there, resprayed, and registered by Christmas ... fingers crossed!

And we've only started the easy part!! lol.

And just for reference, Dhuck thought I was being harsh by making the lad use nothing but hand tools for the first few hours to learn how to use them ... then we got tired of waiting and out came the big boys toys!!!

Young fella was a bit surprised that we could get 6 tray mounts off in the time it took him to do 1 ... but alas ... young kids don't have air compressors, and cordless drills, and drill presses, and angle grinders, etc, etc, etc with them when out in the bush ... gotta learn to use the tools ... and by the way, he realised pretty quick that a torque ratchet wrench isn't a breaker bar ... for some reason "it won't undo the bolt, it just keeps clicking??" ... lmao

He's going great guns though, loves the process, and will learn quick, and ultimately he'll end up with a weapon of a ute that all his P plate mates will be envious of ... as well as dad!!! lol

Looks the goods. I hope your planning to leave it leaf sprung. I think we will have to start trying to organise a ute run. I wouldnt mind having another ute in the mix. Ben-e-boy and myself might have to drop by in our GQ's one day although I plan to do this so I can have a go at that track. All the best to the young fella and as always if you need a hand with anything mech wise dont be afraid to ask.

Nice one Scotty,

I'm envious has heck ain't nothing like my first car, Mate your young bloke is laughing what a great first car to learn to drive in, something bullet proof that shouldn't easily get trashed, and something that isn't a bullet that encourages him to go too quick or hoon about in and most importantly it ain't no rice burner with a 4" hot dog hanging out the back. Truly a man's car for a young man.

So back to the build, how much rust and where is it. When does it get the big hairdryer on it etc etc.

Keep us posted with plenty of pics

For men of Scott's 'comfortable' stature (and mine if it comes to it..... :-) ) Liam will naturally be a smaller rig - he's a lean fit young tacker.

I am not that comfortable with a diminutive forum name for him now - not that it is anything much to do with me. Plus, nothing surer, but he will grow, especially with and into projects like this.

What about something like TrimRig, FitRig or KeenYoungWhipperSnapperRig - well, perhaps not the last one.

Congrats on the project - looks like plenty of fun. Source of rust a windscreen or plenum chamber water leak?

Congrats to to the proud project parents to be

Thanks for the comments lads one and all.

Well, the deeper we dig, the more issues we're finding, like this hub but spacer for instance (took me an hour to crack the nuts and get them off):

18989

Yeah, top job previous people who've had a lash!!! lol

That said, removed the air con condenser/radiator today and the radiator itself (and shroud) is brand new .. so are the brake pads - but unfortunately the locator/baffle plates are non existent so the pads have somewhat moved around and they're stuffed. Ahhh the joys of a project!!

Macca came round tonight and we have a plan for the cabin rust which is awesome (thanks Macca - you're a star!!!), and I'm well and truly into the driveline, so progress early is ahead of expectation.

I bought the young fella full bearing kits for front, rear and swivels as well as all new seals etc today as a bit of a surprise ... he was only surprised that I want him to pay me back though!!! lmao

I'm going to have to find another project after this one me thinks - too much fun!!!

I bought the GQ to GU wheel bearing lock nut conversion kits from Patrolapart, and the tool after being alerted to same on here. The link from here was to e-bay, I think, but I just rang them. Got friendly quick service, just like from the two other on line crowds I have dealt with. and to be fair, the local Nissan Dealer.

The plan is to fit them next time the front bearings on Silver need some Lurve. If you are in a big hurry I don't mind if you grab mine and replace - assuming of course Silver's mystery noise does not involve the front hubs :-) I think mine were delivered in 2 or 3 days, and I rang in the arve to order them. Just let me know as the mech may not be able to fit Silver in for a few days anyway.

I find little to like about the old GQ system, including spending some time grinding down a bit solid second hand socket so that it would fit inside the hub.

Hey Scotty,

I know your pain, I have spent the last 13 months correcting the work that had been done by previous owners, who should never have picked up a spanner.

But sounds like your doing it right, from the ground up, should be an awesome rig when done.

Good luck with it,

Haha - wouldn't matter, he's in Loooovvvve with it either way!!! lol

Got his first dose of the 'not so fun' work last night - started removing the harness and cleaning down the chassis (removed the hayman Reece also which had bolts that were content to stay so to speak!). But alas, full credit to his resolve, he knows it needs to be done, and after 4 days he's still pumped ... that's a commitment record for a teenager I reckon!!! lmao

Proud of him, and he's learning fast too - even realising "righty tighty, lefty loosey" doesn't apply if the bolt head isn't facing him and you're doing things under the car from the outside of the car.

Got him a new tray with side panels etc yesterday for a carton off a mate up here ... so he's even learning to use up all dads favours!!!! lol

No sooner said mate!! lol

She's pretty stripped down now, with all seals and bearings being replaced (as well as new baffle/anti-rattle plates for the callipers). New inner oil seals in tomorrow and the assembly starts from there on the axle/diffs. Get it back to a rolling 'wreck' (lol) and clean down the chassis and respray with zinc paint. Got a new tray for him through a mate, and over the next few weeks/month or so, Macca will be hitting the panel work in the cabin. From there, windshield out, and panels and frame work painted up, and then re-assembly from there ... powering through it!! And loving it ....

And necessity has driven innovation - dead set pain in the @rse putting the new inner oil seals in, so took a 30mm socket, some flat steel, and welded the lot together and then ground the outer edges round (ish) to allow it to fit fully into the housing to make a seal press that stays flat against the surface of the seal to knock it in flush ... can't believe there's no tool available for this!!!

Nice. Scotty's little black insertion tool :-) I bet your other rattle gun sockets are nervous now!

The last seal that give me troubles was the large seal that goes on the inside of the hub, after the inner wheel bearing goes in, on Bob's ute. Rocked and rolled out of the way as it was tapped in and generally give me the irrits :-). Not helped by being towards the end of a longish day, and topped off by a trip to buy another new replacement because I twisted the first one :-)

And did I see a nice shiny new parts washer? Ah, the smell of deodorised kerosene, and the gently splatter of the well worn parts washer brush.

Shows the wisdom in choosing the new place. Nice to have a floor and a roof, and the ability to just pull the door down at work's end for the day.

Knocked straight in, no kinks, no mis-shaping.

Going to make a cup style die that sits over the top of the original for the larger rear seals.

I wonder whether they have started to come out crooked? If so, tap the high side down?

It would be tempting to try and collapse the cage into the centre, since they are so thin - but be vewy vewy caweful not to mark the surface the rollers run in

someone will have a better idea, I'm sure :-)

Nope, they're not coming out crooked boss - just not coming out at all to this point!! lol - going to go get a slide hammer tomorrow to try and sort them out ... apart from that, the front end is just about ready to start going back together!!! Yay ... have to take the rear axles down to Derek's though to use his press on the bearings and get those lock nuts off ... they're somewhat stubborn also - Dhuck had a lash on the weekend, and I thought a bit more bulk would do the trick, but alas, I failed also ... they're tight!!

Hey Bigrig,

Make sure that you keep the bearing cup nice and straight and it should come out nicely. You need to insert a long screwdriver ( that you dont mind donating to the cause as the end may get damaged ) or preferably piece of bar with a flat end from the other side, and keep rotating the hub as you tap the cup out. You can start by tapping at 0, 180, 90, 270 degrees and keep tapping evenly till it starts moving, and then you can just tap consistently wherever trying to keep the cup parallel / flat.

The other alternative is to heat up the hub itself with an oxy set to expand the hub slightly - not the bearing cup, and help free it from home by tapping as above.

The other thing to try, which you can usually do on an external bearing cup is to grab a grinder and carefully grind one of two flat sides on the cup, til it has nearly gone right through. The heat expands it a little, and also makes a weak spot.

For your situation, you would need a die grinder or a dremel type tool, where you can grind a groove or two into the cup, which then makes it much easier to remove once it cools down. The groove becomes a weak spot where the cup collapes in on itself away from the hub.

Really enjoying this thread. Great to see the "family" thing happening in a good way.

Don't take it for granted though. My son just turned 18 and he is not the slightest bit interested. Couldn't care less about driving. Knows he'll have to one day to get around, but that's about the only motivation. Here the traffic is pretty terrible (understatement really - probably life threatening most days - ha ha !) so I can understand him not wanting to drive on the road. But he's not interested in offroading or camping or stuff either. He came on a big week long trip deep in the desert back in 2006, mostly to keep me happy. Ended up enjoying it in the sense that he saw some interesting things and knew that not many people get the chance to go to such places. However, it's just not his thing.

Mostly just a computer geek (that's probably my fault as well as I work here in IT), but not interested in mechanical things or driving, etc. Don't take this the wrong way, he's a great kid, I'm proud of him and we still get along well, but just don't have this one thing in common. So, that's what I mean about not taking it for granted. Enjoy it, coz it's really great to see it working from this distance.

Thanks,
Cameron.

Going somewhat ahead of plan, but putting back together is far more difficult than pulling apart, so the process will slow from here no doubt - especially with Liam learning how to knock in bearing seats and seals etc (very differently as he found out tonight - ones made of steel, the other isn't!!). Think he's having a ball and is really understanding that it's not all fun (he found bearing packing to be quite tiresome and as many of us know, he now knows that even just standing at the parts cleaner, leaning forward washing parts etc is taxing work ...).

And so it continues ... this truck should be an awesome first vehicle for him ... something I'm trying to make sure of!!!

Absolutely boss - make sure you haggle the young fella though - he needs to learn the process!!! Even if it's for a bottle of something ... whatever ... just so he doesn't sponge off people.

Greatly appreciate the offer mate.

Started the sheet metal work today (bless Macca for his welding skills and his willingness to donate his weekend - that's right, it ain't over yet Macca!!!! lol).

Cut the sills out and the rear section of the cabin and got the first of its new skin in ... More tomorrow no doubt as we move onto the floor pan and headlight mounts ...

19433

19434

19437

Progressing well with the wheel hubs, axles, etc back in place with all new seals and bearings - just got to sort new cylinders on the rear drums and anti-rattle plates and pads for the front discs and the tyres/wheels are ready to slot back on ...

The fun stuff starts now with the continued cleaning of the chassis, and the strip and clean down of the body and panels ready for paint once the welding and rust removal is complete ...

Getting there faster than expected, but help as usual from forum members making it a far more seamless job (thanks again Macca!!!!).

So with the welders all out will you be knocking up some barwork to protect those wonderful panels?

Also (and please forgive me if i have missed it) what lift and tyre size do you plan to run?

Being a leafy are you going to pull out some leaves for flex or does he need the carrying capacity?

And now for the biggest question of all. How does tank feel about you neglecting him like this? May be time to give him a freshen up don't you think!!!

Good luck with the rest of the build!

Cheers!

Haha ... Tank definitely is being neglected mate - its next on my list!!!

Going to put in a SAX 3SDS 3" suspension kit so that'll more than sort out the lift and the flex. No bar work planned yet, but no doubt it will happen.

Got the sills cut out and welded up today and the floor pan cut out also (and cleaned up the headlight mounts to remove and treat rust). Doesn't look like much, but a great effort from the team (MudDonk, Macca and myself .. less of myself though as I had some serious observation to do with a can in hand .... to get rid of the dusty feeling I had this morning in my head from long conversations with MudDonk around the fire last night!!! lmao).

Couple of happy snaps and still very happy with the progress. Planning on getting another project truck after this, so if anyone wants to go shares on one and work on it together to sell for profit, then let me know!!!

Didn't know they came out with a 4.2 petrol in them?
I thought the late model ones had the 4.2 Diesel?

there was some 4 litre petrol ones and 3.3 diesels in the MQ and the 3.3TD diesels in the MK.

but from memory the GQ wagons and GQshorty's came out but the GQ ute first came out with the MK guards but GQ grill and round headlights for a year or so before they changed fully to the GQ shape.
they had the GQ running gear and 4.2 diesel.

His is an 89 GQ mate - same front end as such (minus headlights, grill and the like) as the MK, but with a Carby TB42 - according to Nissan, the overlap between the MK and GQ lasted for 2 years (1987-1989) so there is a few out there that are hard to determine from look and as per ours, we had to check the VIN plate (Y60).

MQ MAD
30th August 2012, 01:05 PM
The VIN plate is the best to check the difference between the later MK utes and the GQ early utes
But the MK utes have rectangle headlights unlike the round headlights of the MQ , and the GQ s have the round headlights,so seems a step backwards or forwrds in the transitition
The dash is a giveaway also, the GQs have the GQ dash, gear sticks opposite sides, the rear diffs are centred on the GQs, the spring hangers are different
The MK still have the shackle pins in the rear rails, the GQs havent, lots of little things
Ive the MK here and mate has a leafy GQ ute

Im enjoying the build threads lately

Not much progress this week, but have attacked most rust, and cut out the floorpan as well as removing the windshield and attacking the rust on the roofline to get it ready for paint prep. Lots of bogging and cutting and welding to be done yet, but hit the drivers side sill last night and it's come up a treat - photos not great, but it's a nice finish. Hit it with a heavy grinding disk, then a flap disk, then a light sand to get the rolled edges back to something like original - have created a mammoth task for myself, but will be worth it ...

Before:

19594

After:

19595

19596

Haven't done the bottom edge yet, but I'm sure you'll get the gist of it. Haven't done a lot of panel work in my time, so nice to be learning something new.

Going to be a long weekend of cutting, shaping, grinding and puttying, but that should see it just about ready to be stripped and cleaned ready for paint ...

It'll be rolling again on the weekend also as the brake cylinders will be done and a full bleed of the system and wheels back on ... Ready to roll out and degrease the chassis and clean ready for its makeover also!!

Not sure on learning lead wiping just yet - don't even know what it is!!!! lol

Yep, black chassis, polished alloy bullbar, alloy tray and midnight metallic blue for the cab is what he wants (I want a tube bar and steel tray for rear weight, but seeing as he can't afford it, it doesn't happen!).

Maybe some nice checker plate scuff guards on the entry rather than the tired old plastic ones ... we discussed building a full roof console last night also, so to say he's pumped at the prospect of having a slick looking rig is somewhat of an understatement!!

Also they lead filled all seams for a clean smooth look. Sucks doing it on my mates cortina we're removing rusty panels and need to use the oxy to get the lead out to remove the panels. Its been fun helping and learning with the rig. Scotty if you want cheap rear steel tray we can custom fabricate one for under 200 easy sell the other trays and you'll make money plus a custom tray with hidden storage compartment for tools recovery gear and tyre mount. Judy saying 3mm checker plate $80 and 2 or 3 lengths of 100 x 50 rhs maybe 40 to 60 a length it would look tough and some weight over the wheels

you want to borrow my kero gun to blow whatever inside the chassis rails?

I don't think it would cope with body schut2 but seems to digest most other thinner products- works on a venturi, so if it is too thick, won't pick up.

If you are going to use tectyl, I have another toy I'll bring over if I get there. Keen to have a look at your projects, maybe see to that job I discussed with you and also see if Silver needs attention to castor after its lift - experts say it won't, but I guess the test will be on the free way with the speedo showing more than 90. Why am I interested in the castor issue - 3" at rear unladen, a shade over 2" at the front.

Still too chicken for your test track, so no need to get it ready for me :-)

Heaps of sanding happened and it's not far off being ready for paint ... ummmm ... anyone on here any good with a spray gun?? lol. It's gunna be trial and error with me doing it!!!!

Soooooo ... about 2-3 weeks depending on the spray job, and it'll be ready for roadworthy inspection ...

If anyone comes across some semi-decent door trims/handles etc for a GQ then please let me know - his are ordinary and whilst I found some, the bloke was selling them complete with the doors for a let's say, above average price (coz they're just "so straight" as he kept telling me!!! lol).

Yeah, pretty stoked actually mate - bought it thinking it'd be a 4-6 month project, but with the valued help of many mates (members here), and using the whip on the young fella (and maybe a few sly hours by myself ... like 60+!!), it's shaping up much quicker than expected ...

Should be virtually new, and he'll most definitely get a good batch of years out of it if he treats it right ... we're keeping the receipts for everything also, so I'll post up the total at the end, but so far with completely new seals, shims, bearings (all of them!), oils, paints, products, etc, it's up to $2310 so far ...

Certainly has inspired me to get another one after this is done - maybe a tough comp style truck for serious play for me to give TANK a few more years of life??!! lol
