I haven't done one before. Looking at the wiring diagram I'm sure between the both of us we can work it out (if your game hehehe).

Could you run a stand alone system that you wire into accessories that runs its own glow plug timer and relay?

Yes he could or you could use the original relay, modify the wiring a little bit and fit a momentary switch in the dash.

It all depends how he wants the system to work as to how complicated the set up will be.

Looking at the wiring diagram, I would replace the 6 glow plugs and connect the large white wire to all 6 glow plugs. For now I would just tape up the large red wire so it doesn't short on anything.

Then run some test, how long do the glow plugs stay on for when the engine is cold (before you crank the engine) does the engine start ok when cold? does it run smoothly when started?

Wiring it as above you are still using the original first stage of the glow plug system. So the idea would be to turn the ignition on and wait for the glow plugs to heat up before cranking the engine.

You may find that this is enough and your truck will start and run fine. If it doesn't we can always change the wiring later and add a manual control or even another electrical timer working a second stage.

You will get the glow plug warning light flashing in the dash, this is warning you that the second stage is not working (that's because we disconnected it) don't worry about that at this stage.

If you are happy with how it starts and runs we can change the waring light to show when the glow plugs are on.

I run the rd28 glow control like your describing on my td42 for a while it glowed initially ok never had a problem starting just that the flashing light was annoying but went away once it reached a certain temp ..

i'd just keep replacing the standard glo plugs and keep a spare set on hand ... its only every 12 months ...
