Hi there. I'm in the market for a gq and was planning on getting a soccer mum vehicle and building it up over a few years however I've found one that has all the gear done, front and rear lockers lifted engineered etc for a good price and seems to have been well looked after. Has had rebuilt gearbox, new head recently. The only downside is it is a carby. Are they any good with carby and is it worth getting one over efi for the sake of around ten grand worth of mods already on it, considering it is still very tidy unlike most patrols on the market with all the mods done, which have usually been treated pretty rough. Any pros, cons on the carby engine would be great

I had a few of them they were ok a bit thirsty though a few little mods like pertronix ignition some timing advance and rejetting of the factory carb makes for improvement.
you could always change it to efi at a later date.

The carbys can be a pain and a bit temperamental if getting old or in poor condition. They are also less economical than the efi models. To get one fully rebuilt is between $300 - $500. A common upgrade is to put electric ignition in the dissy. This is a very straight forward and fairly cheap process. There's quite a few people here that have done it and are more than happy with the better fuel economy, response and power. I'm about to do it myself.
By the sounds of it, I'd get the done up patrol.

Just got my maverick (carby model) last night and I filled it up with 100 octane petrol about 65 litres of and it cost me 105 bucks so I went home and ordered the pertronix 2 ignition and coil for 220 bucks. From what I've heard its well worth it. Will let you know

Thanks for the feedback. Looks like I'll go for this patrol and I will certainly make sure the pertronix ignition is the first investment I make.

Jamied, I found the same vehicle & was well setup suspension/gears/tyres etc wise, the carbys are a real b#tch when worn or old, they will lose tune quite often, in my case twice a day when wheeling, in Sydney it is appx $300 to have it fully reconditioned back to stock, I run 35s & get appx 30l/100klm, I am waiting on the tax man to give me some hard earned biccies back so I can take it in for a rebuild, mine come with electronic ignition but brand unknown, mine has a big issue with the auto choke & I firmly believe this is causing mine to suck the fuel down, my exhaust is black as, it is petrol fumy, I want it rebuilt so I can set up a manual choke system, I am hoping to get it down to sub 25, also I dont know what changes have been made to the carby since I was not the original owner, unfortunately there are alot of cowboys out there, hence a forum like this with specific threads are a huge bonus to the average Joe, it will nearly always point you in the right direction first up, there is a combined wealth of knowledge on here, from qualified mechos to backyard types that learnt the hard way (me) that are always willing to throw in their experience, welcome & absord

i was having stuttering problems on a 1990 TB42s auto and installed a petronix lobe sensing and its worked a treat.

Thanks for all the responses. Went ahead and bought the carby gq. Just ordered the pertronix system and gt40 coil so hopefully that will improve economy and the odd splutter it has. Happy with my buy though. Starts first time every time even below zero mornings. I noticed the oil gauge drops low and only comes up when accelerating but from what I've read the senders are pretty unreliable. Hopefully that's the case this time

sound like you got a good buy there jamied. ever since i purchased my 1988 tb42 all i seem to be doing to it is put fuel in, petronix is a good start but also look into a re-jet mine is down to 18l/100km with 33 inch kevlars, was around 29l/100km. i also found the choke was not functioning correctly due to a faulty relay. a lighter foot can also help.
hope your having fun in the new rig.
