selector dial

I have bit of an issue with the ventilation selector dial on my 2001 GU C/Chassis, currently the dial will only turn anticlockwise to the second last selection and is very notchy when turned clockwise, seems to select the function ok.
Has anyone had this problem?
What was the cause?
Any particular tricks in removing/accessing the switch?
