Hi all, my name is Ben and im 22, im new to this forum as im looking into buying a GQ. After being fwdriving alot in the past with mates iv always loved it and wanting to get back into it with my own 4x4.

anyways cutting to the chase, i went into the local ARB shop and talked to a bloke who works there that owns a street driven comp GQ and he said that the petrol/gas converted 4.2L are very thirsty on fuel compaird to the diesel. Can anyone give me any further advice on this as it will determine what i buy if i do.

i tried a quick search but couldnt find anything, any help much appriciated.

Yes they use more fuel but you also have to look at the price of the fuels. My TB42E GQ gets an average of 23L/100km on LPG which costs around 68c per Litre. I've had it as low as 20L/100km and as high as 30 offroad.
I've got a 3" lift, extractors, 2.5" exhaust and was running 33s when it was getting 23L/100km but now I run 31s on the road and that has dropped to about 21L/100km

Hopefully somebody with the diesel can come along and provide similar info for you to compare. Good luck finding a new Patrol!

You'll have heaps more power with the dual fuel setup, but you'll find it very thirsty, especially driven hard offroad. Diesel will remain reasonably constant plus give you a better range. Plus you only need to pay for 1 type of fuel not 2. IMO

Economy will work out near half for the diesel, but this can change depending on some things as mentioned above,
Body lifts, suspension lifts, tyre size, weight (loaded ,unloaded) and mostly how you drive
They are not race cars, but keep the boot in them and theyll gobble the fuel like one

Diesels will command more, generally, due to not just their economy but the engines longivity
I went petrol as i tow and unless i had a serious turboed diesel the petrol does just fine
Diesels more to buy,can be dearer to fix, stuff like injection pumps ect,use less fuel, petrols cheaper to buy use more fuel, much a muchness
Your budget will determine what you get more than buying on economy

I've had both (TB42EFI and TD42) and whilst I was happy enough with the dual fueller it was a PIA when off the beaten track over here in WA. If you could even get Gas it was hideously expensive. That also meant having to use jerries a lot with the smaller aux tank until you coud get LPG at a decent price.

Given the only reason to convert to LPG is for cheaper fuel... If you are pretty much always within range of a servo with cheapish LPG then they are def well worth considering. They chew absolute heaps of LPG esp if you are 4WD or Towing whillst the Diesel just chugs along for ever with long distances between fuel stops.

Because I do lots of remote K's and usually have my camper in tow it was a happy day when I changed to diesel

Hey bud head over to the intro section and say g'day there please mate. We prefer new members to post an intro before posting questions.

Re you question? I get about 12lt/100 in my GQ TD42 and as much as 22 in heavy load low range.

My GUIV TD42 recently did 23 on a remote desert crossing and on the Hiway will do 1000kms out of my 2 tanks

Hi Guys , agree with above - I've owned carby gq which i intended to put on gas - In the end I didn't as a few mechanics I know said not to, especially if keeping the car for a long time - which i intended to do.

They reckoned that the hotter burning gas would eventually destroy the valve seats even with flash lube and that you really needed a quality conversion , not a cheapie , plus stories of blowing up air boxes etc .

Anyway , enough to put me off so traded for a higher mileage TD42 with recent injectors and pump . Never looked back . 12- 13 litres / 100k , good range and low end power . Could never get better than 20 l/100 on petrol and in mud or sand you need to have an oil tanker nearby . Hopeless (in my opinion ) for remote area travel . A well maintained diesel is far more reliable too .

If only running in suburbia then straight gas would be ok - but then why have a patrol !

Cheers and good luck.

even thogh the gas is expensive in some areas ive never in over 25years of having gas vehichles ever had a problem with it at all..my gq is on lpg and is injected fuel im gettn 20llitres 100kms towing a 1100kg campertrailer, and thats with the little rb30 petrol motor..we just this week got back from gawler to darwin, broome, pperth back to gawler, and gas was available everywhere we whent,i got a 95litre petrol tank and a usable 95litre gas tank so plenty of range there..diesel or petrol,lpg..rb30 motor very cheap for parts,,commodores are everywhere,,buy what you can afford..i did..
