Hey all. Last night on the way home from work the gq started coughing and spluttering in any gear on fuel as well as gas. Along with this I noticed the volt meter droping to adnormal levels right down to 6 volts. Obviously all accessories showed the strain. Headlights and dash lights beening very faint was a nightmare let along the wipers struggling to do one cycle whilst it's bucketing down! I left it overnight as I had finished work late. This morning I checked the battery's. The main battery was still 12 volts and the secondary was 9 (but it's had issues before). The gq started and idled fine for 10 mins. I really checked the battery's , main battery still only 12volts instead of 14 and the secondary was still 9. Since she was idling fine I took it for a run round the block and within 2 mins was experiencing the same issue, the sputtering and the sudden drop in volts. I think I was lucky to make it back home. The battery light was flickering upon start of the gq about a week ago but would turn off as soon as I took off. The battery light is still off with this current problem. Any help greatly appreciated!

Did you check the voltage with the engine running.

Yeah the battery didn't even go above 12volts, I know it should be around 14. Replace the alternator then?

You could take it off and give to an auto elec to check out if he's your friend or a good bloke it might only cost $100 to fix (brushes, etc).

If It's the original alternator might be worth while getting a new one though...lol

With the engine running at a fast idle, measure the voltage at the back of the alternator and then across the battery.

Are both readings the same?

Might be worth getting a bigger alternator if there's enough fun vouchers in the kitty
