Hello mates, Can I use a RYCO Z9 instead of a RYCO Z115???

I have 1991 4.2 Diesel, the Z9 filter is a little bit shorter (everything else equal)

Would it hurt the car?

Not sure mate but I always use the z115's as well. Why would you want to try this anyway?

People have be known to use the Z9 as opposed to the Z115 due to the massive saving,$9 to $35

But they are different internally and i wouldnt skimp on a filter that was designed to fit and designed to work and fit something that wasnt

The nissan L28 (MQ/MK) have the same issue and even on these old engines i wont take the risk

Buy the Z115 ...

Somebody asked (Why not use Ryco Z115?) The answer is that here in Central America the closest Filter they have to the Nissan OEM filter/Ryco Z115 is the following:

Fram PH8A
Purolator I30001
Quaker State QS8A (the RYCO equivalent to these are the Z9, not the Z115)

Can anybody post what filter manufacturers fit the TD42?? (1991 Shorty Diesel) (with part#s)???

First, good quality oil, the right filter, and regular changes of both are among the cheapest way of looking after your engine.

That said, with my petrol L28 and TB42 I have used Z9 because, provided they have non return setups my limited research indicates they are up to the job, are a little larger, and are cheaper.

Note, this is with Petrol engines. I seem to recall that with some diesel engines with twin filters, the part numbers are different. Speculation was that one filtered finer than the other. Is that the case with the TD42? that is, different part numbers?

My brother tells me that you can use a Z9 instead of a Z115 but not a Z115 instead of a Z9. While both have an anti drain valve the Z9 has a pressure relief valve which is suitable for old toyotas and patrols. I drive a petrol/gas 4.2 so have no first hand experience. Why dont you ask Ryco at http://www.rycofilters.com.au/contact to be sure.

I use Z9 in place of Z115 and find that the oil light goes out faster after first start, been using for years now and have no problem = cheaper too ... this is on my97 TD4.2 after market turbo

I've just put a Z9 on my TB42E to replace the Z170. Seems OK so far. Did some reseach first and a few have gone down this path already.
Z9 is about an inch longer and is difficult to get a filter tool onto.

Be interested in how you go, ill consider doin the filter swap with the L28 MQ , as there the same as TB42, but not on the GQ
GQ only has 230 Ks on it , im not risking it for a few dollar saving
