Hi all, I am sure this is not a unique issue, I am currently getting 30L to 100KM's on my truck, it has 35"s, it is a 4.2 Manuel, exhaust is massively black & dripping on start-up, idles well, drives well, choke sticks on so sometimes I have to physically knock it back, mostly goes back on its own, outside of this fuel issue it goes really well, I have spent alot of time fixing all the gremlins throughout recently & have tuned the idle & fuel mix correctly, actually it wont even stall with the mix screw all the way in, unknown what needle & seat it has, timing 10 advanced, heaps of power, my questions are;

Is there an aftermarket Carby that complies & can be fitted (via adapters etc) or do I have to have this carby rebuilt to specs, can the auto choke come off & have a manual choke fitted, has anyone fitted anything aftermarket & if so what did you fit & how did it go? is thier a good carby specialist in Sydney, Wollongong or Central Coast anyone can recommend, I live in Western Sydney but travelling isnt an issue if highly recommended.

Hi mate. They are notorious for bad fuel economy and also notorious for not quite running right. There are a lot of threads about regarding tuning up etc (have a search).
What are the plugs, leads, points like?
You could try an electronic ignition setup. A few members have fitted the popular Pertronix Ignition system with great results in power and economy.
ReCarb do a converted Holley carby setup to suit the TB42, ive heard mixed results with this. Its a 350 Holley converted to a 330 with other mods to suit a 4wd application.

A mate just got qouted between $200 and $350 to clean and rebuild his standard carby (92 TB42 maverick) at Recarb. The guy highly recommended getting the carb back to its original state instead of fitting a holley kit (which they supply).
He's going to get the carby rebuilt, add pertronix electric ignition and flame thrower coil, new leads and plugs all for less than the Holley carby alone.

Just did a 350 holley conversion to a mates LWB GQ dual fuel. his comments are the following Haeps more power for uphill & acceleration getting a average of 30 more kms per tank of LPG & better performace all round, he runs 35's with a 5" spring & 2" body lift . we custom fabricated the LPG adaptor plate & had it inspected before we used it

the holley conversion is not viable, I would never make the money back in savings on fuel, I run similiar suspension, 35's, 5" lift etc, mine is also 92 TB42 Maverick LWB (non LPG), I think a carby rebuild is the go with a manuel choke, auto chokes can cause problems once worn or sticky, mine is sticky for sure but I cant control the fuel mixture, this is either because the auto choke is permanatly on to some degree causing the extra fuel to dump all the time or someone prior to me has tried unsuccessfully to jig with the needle & seat & jets etc, I dont have the issue when climbing atm but my understanding is it is flooding, not starving for fuel on hill climbs, again, this could be just from jet or choke issues.

I replaced the plugs as number one plug was damaged from a combustion explosion, it idles nice, heaps of power & smooth as through the power range, has electronic ignition already but I dont know what brand, perhaps throw in a new coil anyway for peace of mind.

Mechanic over the road has removed all evidence of auto choke from his straight petrol tb42.

Goes well, and doesn't take long to warm up and get going - note we are talking Brisbane temps :-)

I think the thermostat in mine is running too cold, and keeping the auto choke on a bit. It's on the list of things to replace

yes rebuild to be done, auto choke to go, I will have it rebuilt back to spec, I will rig up a manual choke, this should fix the bloody issue once & for all

Your float levels could also be out a rebuild is definetly a good option and you will be very happy with the outcome.
