Rear main seal let go yesterday in a big way! My usual mechanic is booked out for a month so i called around and got qouted $730 for the job (including a new sump gasket). Is this ridiculously high?? 91 GQ petrol auto.

What price did your regular mechanic give you? I wouldnt say its to bad considering its a g/box and clutch out job

Go to your local bearing shop, my last tojo around $10.50 from memory, shit you can buy a transfer case for that. Ever thought of buying a complete engine rebuild kit, gotta be cheaper, plus you'll have spare gaskets and seals for other jobs. Try Terrain tamer or ROO DOG spares

Missed the part that the price was for whole job,

Some of the patrols you can only buy genuine and some are a bonded seal which is in an alloy mounting plate. If i remember correctly these were just over $100. Give your regular mechanic a call and see what price he would have done it for will be a good comparison. If you are lucky enough that its a standard type lip seal arrangement then that price does sound a little high as threedogs stated these type seals are worth peanuts.

Yeah, i dont have the time, space and most importantly skills to do it myself undfortunately. Its my daily driver too so i cant go without for very long.
Im guessing it couldnt be more than $120 in oil and gaskets. So thats over $600 for labour.....Hmmmmmm

Didnt get a price off my usual mechanic. Im sure it wouldnt have been as much labour as he is a transmission specialist and is no doubt pretty quick at getting em out and back in....

Thats about the labour you will get charged for a clutch ( I know yours is auto) sump gaskets are around the 20-30 dollar mark depending what type of seal you have this could vary a fair bit.

Does the front of motor need to come off like a chev V8, there was a tool called a SNEAKY PETE that could hook the old one out, but thats very old school

Nuh you just gotta drop the box and she is sitting right there for you a seal removal tool will make light work if its not one of the bonded items.

Just gave it another degrease and had a bit more of a look. It appears that the front seal is leaking a bit too. I thought it was the sump gasket that was leaking but i reckon its the front seal leaking and running around the lip of the sump.
Ive lined a mate up to do the rear seal. Im guessing the front seal can be done at a later date as there is no doubling up on labour etc?? (sooner rather than later as its already weeping)

You can buy shims for these can't you? My mate did on his 302 powered 75s ute

Just priced up seals. Genuine from nissan: Front $32, rear $77. Not bad for genuine.

In our workshop and others in my area, removal of a 4x4 gearbox will usually vary between $450 and $650, add to that the cost of removing, cleaning and reinstalling the sump. Plus cost of the gaskets and seals. Sounds about right to be honest. Patrols are knowns to leak at the front seal, I have seen a few sump gaskets leaking but more commonly front and rear main seal.
