Anyway to test a tacho sensor unit?

Hi all,

I own an 89 Safari SWB (TD42) and the tacho doesn't work at all but all the other gauges do so I'm assuming the the sensor unit is buggered. I've done some searchs but I can't seem to find a thread that tells you how to test it.

I am pretty sure my multimeter gave off readings on the khz setting
